Hey seagulls.

My older brother was reading some stuff online about cons and how they're just "excuses for unpopular girls to go and behave like sluts" and now he doesn't want me going to any cons anymore.

He's never taken an interest until now, and I'm not sure what site it was on, I know he's friends with a couple of guys who post on /jp/ who hate cosplayers, so maybe it was them. But he basically thinks the whole thing is a bad influence on me and I'm only going there to meet guys and stuff.

I'm 19 and he's 25, just for reference purposes.

Anyone else have experiences with overprotective older brothers or other family members when it applies to cons?

The problem is that the majority of female cosplayers that get posted here or on most places online are really the 'slutty' ones. If they're sluts is up for debate and yes, cons can be places where it's easier to whore yourself out but in all honesty it's not really like that IRL.

There are girls of every kind there just as there are guys of every kind. It's really like going to any other place and you'll have a multitude of different types of people. Cons are not the only place where people will behave like 'sluts', be it male or female. So don't let this petty judgment taint both of your minds about cons. They can be a lot of fun with the right people, cosplayers or not.

Sounds to me like you need to have a talk with your brother.

For one thing, you're an adult and have the right to make your own decisions. That includes your sexuality. Also, I think you need to sit down and tell him that he needs to stop being gullible and that he should have a little more respect for you as a person and not make such an assumption. It doesn't matter what OTHER girls are doing at conventions, it's what you're doing is what's important.

If he assumes you're going to just go and do what he's read online or what his buddies tell him, then he really is just clueless and has a serious lack of respect for you. He should know you better then a bunch of his cosplay hating /jp/ buddies do.
