Don't forget that for the longest time lolita was considered a teenage fashion in Japan. You will have a hard time finding someone over the age of 25 in old street snaps. Of course they all look cute and fresh, it takes less effort when you are that young. Only in recent years maturing lolitas are becoming a thing in Japan and brands like IW are catering to the growing demand, and the Japanese lolitas seem to be doing fine and aging gracefully with their clothes. Only the western lolitas tend to get worse with age and I don't get it. It's like they care less about their basic appearance and try to make up for it with ever more ridiculous coords, even though the basic appearance is the most important aspect about having a polished look. I dearly miss the times of like 10 years ago when the average coord was much more simple but it looked so so much better overall.

I have a couple of those street snaps books by Phaidon and most of the lolitas in the photos are younger. The older people in those snaps tend to be dressed in more high gothic/aristocrat or perhaps classical lolita. Don’t think any older people in Japan really wore sweet (or if they did were not considered cute enough back then to photograph). Times have definitely changed as regards what style is acceptable for your age as some of those snaps go back 20 years, but there is no excuse not to make an effort to look clean and neatly put together.

From the beginning of the 2000s several brands have said that their main customer base was 20+. That suggests that most people wearing lolita (incl sweet) were at least 20. When you look at street snaps where the age is mentioned, the youngest I've seen wearing lolita properly is 17. Most of the teenagers wearing lolita in those street snaps are 18 and 19. This makes a lot of sense because before 18 they probably wouldn't have enough earning potential or freedom to buy and wear lolita. We also have to consider who goes out with the intent to appear in street snaps, and who is eventually picked be photographed, and then eventually picked to appear in publications.
I think it would be much safer and more accurate to say that lolita was considered mostly a fashion for young women. And you're correct that we're seeing more content about 30+ lolitas now.

The main reason why a lot of older lolitas in the west look less great is because of lack of care about grooming and healthy lifestyle. We also have to consider that many of these older lolitas have only just started wearing the fashion because they either found out about it later in life, or admired it for a long time and only got the courage to try and wear it later on. Also, and I hate to complain about wigs again, lots of 30+ lolitas in japan style their own natural hair so that helps with looking elegant. Some older western lolitas are still wearing crazy or bad looking wigs.

Humidity can make a big difference to how hot it feels. Also, if the country has very distinct seasons that go from quite hot to quite cold it can be hard to acclimatize so I don't think we should be shaming anyone just for sweating a lot in summer. I have a friend who now lives in a hot country who thinks it's cold below 25C, it's also not humid there and the temperature doesn't change much over the course of a year. She experiences 40C differently than someone who is used to near freezing temperatures most of the year.
Sweating doesn't necessarily mean you smell rank, that's dependent on some factors. Sweating is the body's cooling system and above a certain temperature everyone sweats.
I can assure you Japan's summer is hellish, even texans say so. And every japanese person sweats in summer if it's hot and they're out of the comfort of AC.
Deodorant doesn't keep you from sweating, it's just to mask the smell. Antiperspirant is the underarm product that is supposed to reduce sweating. It is quite popular in japan and SK right now.
I'm for long sleeves in summer. I don't think having long thin cotton sleeves is going to feel much warmer than short thin cotton sleeves. It also helps prevent your arms from tanning or burning. I'm also for big hats, sunglasses and parasols to make summer more liveable. Also sweat wipes and sweat pads.

In case anyone is not convinced yet, I assure you that if you're seeing a japanese person wearing lolita in 35+C heat they're sweating in their clothes.

Yup, that's what deodorant does and it is the only thing it does.
Antiperspirant is the product that is intended to reduce sweating, usually it also has components that mask sweat odor so in that case it's a 2 in 1 product.
If you don't want to sweat under your arms at all there are also odorless products available that temporarily knock out your sweat glands. It is not recommended to use these often, and it is not recommended to use these on a larger area. But they're a good solution if you need to dress very fancy for a summer wedding for example. Or a summer lolita meetup. If it's hot you will still sweat in places you have not applied the product. The body still needs to cool down. But there's still a benefit to using the product because pit sweat is trapped there and evaporates poorly, whilst sweat in most other places evaporates more easily and is less likely to leave unsightly wet spots.
It's very popular in SK and JP. You might be able to get it in places that sell SK or JP skin care.

Ayrt- it's the exact opposite here in terms of selection. Most women don't even realise that they're using antiperspirant though they just think it's what deodorant does. I don't tend to wear antiperspirant for medical reasons, and it's a lot harder to find regular deodorant in the women's section, I usually buy it online. Most of the deodorant in store for women is the type that stains clothes.

I'm pretty sure most of the western lolita community is autistic. Probably also elsewhere too. Some learn and care about grooming and looking presentable. It's also a big part of culture in other parts of the world. Others do not in the west, especially in the US. There's also the lack of body awareness.

Wigs tend to be easier to deal with, especially when your hair is generally unkempt or requires a lot of time/effort/product to style.

I'm sort of stuck wearing wigs most of the time due to hormonal hair loss that started in my mid-20's. I used to have thick, full, long curly hair. I wish I had that now. I can get away with hats and headdresses with natural hair. Wigs are kind of needed for headbows and clips in my case. Shit sucks.

Lol, I wouldn't say most but yeah, there are a lot of autistic lolitas. I think the simplest explanation for poor grooming and just not being so aware about their body is the fact that a lot of lolitas aren't just into lolita, they are specifically nerds who had no interest in fashion and appearance before finding out about lolita fashion, and finding out about lolita fashion didn't stimulate them to become much more aware of their appearance and grooming. Nerds as a group (both men and women) tend to be less concerned about hygiene/grooming and appearance compared to the general public. So I expect anyone who treats lolita as a "nerd costume" (as someone else put it) to be fat and have greasy, poorly styled hair and no makeup. Imagine the average Halloween Arcade or Doctor Who dress buyer. They're typically not interested in japanese lolita unless it's bodyline or Meta rereleases twinkle journey in plus size or any other plus sized release catering to nerdy interests.

To be clear I'm not talking about girly girls who have nerdy hobbies, a bedroom full of plushies, fully decked out sanrio bathroom, a special room to do their makeup, hair and nails, etc.

As for what explains the occurrence of lolitas who wear full AP/moitie/btssb and are still unhygienic and poorly styled, that has to be the autism.

It's funny that apparently I'm not the only one.
I'm trying my best, what helped me a lot is finally earning my own money. For example at least I don't have to worry so much about my hair, as I just can go to a hairdresser before a meet up.
Also cheap skin care products are just a waste of time and space. The second I could buy myself some nice skin care my skin got so much better.

I have decent proportions between bust, waist and hips, but my bust and shoulders are quite big so if I don't emphasize my waist I just end up looking like a brick. I can get away with slightly raised waists but not underbust cuts. Drop waist cuts are also a no for me.
My folder with the dropped waist stuff is all pictures from moonberry moon afternoon (japanese indie brand), I could have sworn there was another brand that did this type of stuff but I can't find it. All the pictures I have is of clothes on a mannequin or on a hanger. No coord pictures.

nta but I remember 20+ years ago this type of hairstyle was super popular amongst kids. For P.E. girls would often tie ponytails with bubbles like this to avoid hitting each other's faces.I haven't seen it much in Lolita, but I have def. seen it being used as part of more intricate hairstyles (from that time when using ribbons and braids to make shapes in the hair was also popular)

I'm glad a lot of us are autistic, I feel like I've found my people. Sensory issues are a bitch though and for a fashion that's so much more uncomfortable than normie stuff I don't know why it attracts so many autists.
In my case, I was never actually taught how to use makeup, take care of my skin, treat my hair, or anything- and I found it hard with sensory issues to do so, so I gave up for a lot of my childhood since I thought those things were just supposed to be uncomfortable and painful. I had to learn all of it with no help or support and lolita helped by giving me some sort of "rule" to follow. I enjoyed reading the tumblrs and livejournal posts because it gave me a sense of structure that made learning more fun and less confusing. I really do wonder if a lot of the women attracted to lolita were somehow neglected as kids but maybe I'm reading into it too much.

fellow autist here, I resonate a lot with your experiences but I have to disagree that lolita is uncomfortable. I wore jeans recently for the first time in several years and it was awful, they're so uncomfortable and restrictive compared to skirts. Bloomers are extremely comfortable too and long socks and tights protect my legs from being touched so I don't have to wear pants all summer long and as long as the bodice actually fits you the dresses are very comfortable. The only thing I think is worse is the elastic bands in several parts of the clothes but you can loosen them pretty easily.

a lot of lipsticks in that colour will have the brighter edges if that's what you're fixated on. i've seen this exact effect from dark room (melt cosmetics), black honey when built up to opaque (clinique), noir (besame), and about 3-4 korean drugstore brands. if you like it, it's easily dupeable, but i would bet money it's some generic drugstore lipstick rather than anything custom
