What's /cgl/'s opinion on offensive/borderline offensive cosplay at cons? Should it be banned or allowed? Where do you draw the line?

I draw the line at anything racist. Cosplay isnt an excuse to do blackface or yellowface. It isnt an excuse to cosplay a nazi either. The only time its ok to wear a nazi uniform is during war reenactments at reenactment events or historical plays.
An anime convention is not either of those. That shit aint cute.

Even if its from a videogame, dont cosplay it. No one gives a fuck where its from. Dont do it.

Dressing up as the colombine kids isnt considered cosplay either. Dont wear that shit at cons.

I feel like there's a little leeway with the nazi thing. If you're cosplaying a Wolfenstein character to a comic convention, I'd personally see no problem with it because it's from a video game. If you're cosplaying someone from Hellsing to an anime con too, I'd be okay with it. Maybe get rid of insignia or replace it. It's mostly about what you do in cosplay that matters. I remember at a con years and years back a group of Hetalia cosplayers thought it'd be smart to do a photoshoot at the local Holocaust memorial down the street. That shit isn't cool.

I think these types of cosplayers need to push their cosplay more into the props territory if they want to do a nazi uniform from a game/comic. For example, having one of those fake food milkshakes in hand with them to reference a scene within the game.

If you expect for people to think you're a piece of shit for it irl, maybe don't go for it at a convention either. I do think that what a convention "should" have as far as kid friendliness/general appropriateness is highly variable and ought to be, but it should be crystal clear to anyone attending and should probably take into consideration things like how public their venue is. Legit offensive cosplay is quite hard to find and usually doesn't last too long at cons, I've seen some shit get shut down fairly quick. I don't think I've ever seen blackface, yellowface, or some kind of racial thing directly pointing to a group allowed at a con in the many years of doing cosplay. If it did exist it probably was taken out quick,

What OP probably means is cosplay in poor tastes, school shooters(outside sam hyde meme), political statement cosplay, clear cosplay going after a specific group/individual that can't help it, etc. Is kinda shit. I don't think Ebola Chan or Corona chan are offensive, but can easily be seen in poor tastes and should realize as such.

With the rise of social media and stuff at cons, there is basically no offensive cosplay that I can find in the past few years.

There's no right answer to this but here's my take

>Is it done with malicious intent/stirring shit on purpose
>Does the cosplay itself promote potentially harmful ideologies
>Is the costume related to the theme of the con
>Does it use real-life symbols/imagery

For example, someone cosplaying from Hellsing/other series with Nazi-references and influences is totally fine. It's related to the con theme and based on fictional source material. Real nazi-imagery should probably be removed from the costumes tho, or at least altered a bit.
Actually cosplaying real historical Hitler probably crosses the line. Same with school shooters/mass murderers/other edgy shit that teenagers might cosplay: nothing to do with the con, simply cosplaying to look edgy, connections to real-life events are too strong.

Darkening your skin to a cosplay is a bit tacky but completely allowed if it's done to achieve a more accurate cosplay. It rarely looks good tho, so sticking to your own skintone is probably better. If it's done as a joke or as a way to ridicule poc, then it crosses the line. Then again, I'm not from the US and in here darkening your skin for cosplay purposes is generally considered pretty okay.

Basically: is it based on something fictional, is the cosplayer chill and not trying to ridicule/offend someone on purpose? Then it's probably okay.

I think that if the cosplay is invasive, like if the character they’re cosplaying is a pervert so they act perverted towards con goers, that’s not cool. I’m a person of color but I’m not bothered by people doing a tan to cosplay someone. Even if you’re in the military you shouldn’t be allowed to cross dress/cross play someone from a different unit I.e someone in the army dressing up as a marine. Dark humor can be funny sometimes, though I wouldn't recommend to do it at a convention.

The topic is rather overrated imho, especially the blackface discussion doesn't make any sense outside of the US, and even within their borders it's pretty bizarre.

I personally don't mind meme / offensive cosplays like ebola-chan or corona-chan though. The only time I really don't apprecciate it if it's worn for active mockery / discriminatioatory reasons, e.g. like cosplaying ebola-chan for mocking the death of africans. That's not funny and unneccessary.

So I guess I base my judgement on the intend of the cosplay in the end.

And of course in general whoever cosplays such stuff needs to be aware of what a backlash they can get for it and the timing for that would be crucial.
