Here's my convoluted 2 cents
>fairy kei
a style distinct from yumekawaii in that there are distinct recognizable silhouettes (like a triangle with "weight" towards the bottom, often achieved by wearing a shirt or sweater on top with a tutu or layered skirts on the bottom, followed by occasionally layered legwear.) Nile Perch's take on fairy kei has a different silhouette in that it often involves either more fitted pieces or more flow-y dresses. If you compare the styles of Milklim and Nile Perch, the difference is clearer. Usually excludes darker colors, but there are exceptions to this rule (like Nile Perch's darker night sky dress print.)
>spank kei
Embraces 80s motifs and elements. Commonly utilizes polka dots (black and white typically) and rainbow patterns. Colors are mixed bold and pastel. Vintage, upcycled clothing is sometimes used. Occasionally layered lingerie pieces are worn, occasionally over sweaters. Denim (usually acid wash) is acceptable for wear, as is baggy, oversized clothing. The idea is to go for a vague, cutesy 80s-90s Girl Talk sleepover with Cyndi Lauper vibe. If that sounds confusing, it totally is, but you know it when you see it (bear with me!) Also inspired by 80s jpop idol aesthetics.
>pop kei
More modern, not strictly 80s themed and allows for the bolder color palette. Galaxxxy is a trademark brand for this style, as is ACDC Rag. This one is a little more difficult for me to describe, but it definitely passes for more of a modern streetwear.
>fancy style
It's a vibe, an aesthetic. I like to think something becomes "fancy" when certain motifs, fabric textures (like fluffy fabric) and colors are put together. Creamy Ice, Nile Perch, Fancy a la Mode and Dreamy Melmel are all "fancy" brands because of the way their items are made. Dreamy Melmel definitely comes to mind when I think of "fancy" (pic related, art is by the creator, Mannequin). Fancy has an 80s yumekawaii feel.

That definitely rings true. I was very surprised when I went to Japan in November and wore what I thought was typical fairy kei style, only to be called a fancy girl everywhere I went, ha. It seems like pastel street styles evolve very quickly compared to slower fashions like lolita, so it can be harder to keep up with, especially due to the language barrier.

One more thought for now: I feel like when Mania-q and Milklim died, the more traditional style of wearing FK in japan really died with it. Milklim at the time of its closure was low quality and didn't produce pieces with the same feel that it used to. Fancy style inspired by NP, Fancy Surprise, Magical (especially with the Listen Flavor stocking comeback) and small indie brands like it seem to be what's in right now. I'm at work late with nothing better to do, sorry for the rant blocks of text. Pic related is another dreamy melmel art piece; i'm still emo she quit drawing and making accessories (she does have a baby now, though). She was huge insp. for when I began wearing spank style

yume kawaii is definitely just an aesthetic. the term was first associated with UV resin accessory designs. i see a lot of people talking about yume kawaii in conjunction with yami kawaii (what people in the west incorrectly call menhera, which is is the name for the movement of mental health awareness and acceptance among mainly younger women). i use the japanese internet and make resin accessories, so i've researched into this a lot. i've seen the yume kawaii aesthetic defined as anything that is cute with a slightly surreal or dreamlike fantasy aspect that evokes feelings of fuwafuwa (fluffy in a hazy way) and kirakira (dreamy sparkle). common motifs being hearts, stars, moons, clouds, rainbows, sailor suits, unicorns, rabbits, ribbons, magic sticks, keys, angel wings, crowns, crosses, candy, cotton candy, strawberries, strawberry milk, bandage, etc. color themes are generally pastels or vivid "cute" colors such as those in pop kei. branching from resin things all of the styles you mentioned, and to some extent yami kawaii can be considered yume kawaii with the right motifs (similar to how hime lolita and hime gyaru were/are both based around princess aesthetic you can have yume fairy kei etc.) as for the rest of the styles i think >>10318800 is pretty spot on with her explanation so i won't go into them.

Gotta say milklim dying was so good for the future of fkei. Nile perch should have always dominated, along with indie brands. Milklim was so low quality by the end. Honestly they were always kinda subpar but they ramped it up by the end of their run. I miss maniaQ a lot though. They were the reason for the tutu being a big part of fkei during the early 2010s. I see! So you would say yumekawaii is surreal and dreamlike but with more innocent imagery, while yamikawaii is more edgy and deals with darker subject matter?
I often see yamikawaii in the west depicted like pic related, with the "yami" being interpreted both literally as dark / black color palette, and as dark subject matter. However it seems you're saying that yamikawaii actually tends to be pastel as well, and is actually what people in the west would call menhera fashion, right?

>> No.10319113

>>10319106
Huh? No, yamikawaii and yumekawaii are not fashion styles. They're descriptive terms. Fairy kei, a pastel menhera outfit, & a pastel decora outfit are all 'yumekawaii'. A simple pastel outfit in lavender with some fluffy hair ties, while not fitting into any specific fashion, is 'yumekawaii'. It's dreamy cute. In menhera fashion, yume/yami are just used as categorizations, pastels versus solid colors, since the fashion as a whole fits the description of 'yamikawaii'.

'Yamikawaii' can also mean dark subject matter, but that's kind of redundant in a fashion that everything deals with dark subject matter.

So, a pastel menhera outfit is 'yamikawaii' because it's a yamikawaii fashion, but the outfit itself is yumekawaii.

They're just descriptors, not a fashion.

The last thing I'll add is if the terms start being confusing, that's because J-fashion is much more fluid now than days past. Use to you had gyaru, lolita, fairy kei, decora... so-on and so-forth, but the styles never bleed over into one another with the exception maybe of hime gyaru. Really, hime gyaru is when you start to see what I'm about to explain happen:

Style became more fluid, borrowed off one another, and it got much harder to categorize stuff. Even menhera can be styled many different ways... you might have your cookie-cutter casual look with big shirt and leg wear, but you also have decora, fairy kei, and even otome examples.

Most Western menhera is honestly just decora with yamikawaii, for example.

Sorry if what I said was unclear, I never meant to imply that I thought yumekawaii or yamikawaii were fashion styles. Just trying to nail down what makes them separate ideas so I don't get them confused.

Ugh, going on what I said in >>10319120, it reminded me of the way selling something about actual mental health issues is risky, but selling something quirky like Harley Quinn is okay. I feel like he kind of did that trying to copyright 'yamikawaii' & his statements distancing himself from 'menhera' the instant he started being involved with a Western audience. In the end, all the people who had supported him in his home country and overseas, distanced themselves from him.

Yeah, you pretty much got it. In a fashion where everything is 'dark', it becomes more a matter of color scheme and presentation.

Now, what makes it difficult is if you aren't talking about menhera. Sometimes, you have someone who wears just general yume fashion, decora, or whatever who chooses to wear syringe accessories, a gun motif, or something dark. In that instance, it's adding a yamikawaii element. So, once again, you can likely see the 'idea' of what they are shifts due to context. In a fashion where everything is centered around darkness and suffering, the use of such a term for these things is redundant. However, for someone who doesn't wear fashion centered around darkness and suffering, an item depicting such, pastel or not, can make an outfit yamikawaii.

You wouldn't call a creepy cute outfit goth after all.

How do you all feel about design replicas, like if someone would copy this designs, maybe with some minor changes here and there and would sell it on the western market?
I found the strawberry scarf on Ali but I hesitate to buy it because it´s a replica.

And what´s this about that overpriced plushies from Spank?
Does someone really pay 60$ for a no-name vintage plushie outside of Japan? Just asking because I still have some from my childhood and start to see the Dollars coming in.

>> No.10350492

>>10350429
I believe the price point comes from the novelty of owning a foreign vintage item. I'm guessing that items like it aren't readily available in their marketplace that warrant a lower price, and once you factor in the 80s/90s western factor (a time that Spank heavily draws inspiration from), there is this implicit value to Japanese buyers. It's like people who drop $80 on vintage sanrio stationery on ebay; such items are likely harder to find outside of Japan

>> No.10350538

I don't think there is an issue with indirect replicas from non-print items, it's not like they are overly unique designs in case of fk stuff to begin with.

Analyze old street snaps. Everyone is triangular in some form or fashion. Like a Christmas tree shape when you count their legs. Start at their neck and draw a line to their hem. I was the op! It's just hard for me to find FK prints in normie shops and ordering from japan sites takes some time so im trying to make some first steps with what i have. Its lots of pastel solid tops (im trying to use different fabrics) and neutral bottoms like beige and grey (its almost impossible to find pastel pants where live unfortunately). Not really FK, more like inspired fashion. Also i sucks at layering yet but trying to wear lots on my head without falling to decora category.

One more question: where to find pastel shoes. I mean big size pastel shoes of decent quality not cheap chinese shit.

My thoughts: "Boy style", from what I've observed, is a term people in western circles seem to use for yumekawaii outfits with pants, as well fairy kei outfits that use pants/a milklim stadium jacket/pastel snapback hats you can find at cons. However, I feel like the term is unnecessary because it's not like wearing pants and a jacket makes something "boyish", it's just fairy kei with pants and a jacket, or a generic pastel yumekawaii outfit with pants and a jacket. I'm sure you know that yumekawaii is just a general descriptive term for pastel and dreamy outfits, and that just because you're dressed wearing yumekawaii pastel things, it's not always fairy kei. I frequently see the term "boy style" used to describe these types of dress when it involves pastels and pants, like the wearer feels this implicit need to assert themselves as "still a guy" when they use that term. Just feels weird and like they have something to prove, like if you want to wear pants in fairy kei, just do it

While it's true that buying from fairy kei specific brands/items would make it easier to build an outfit, I think it's important to remember that there's a pretty big difference between whats considered standard between different street fashions. It's a lot easier to use everyday items in fairy kei than in lolita just because lolita items usually need a lot more fabric than the average item, and fairy kei does not. Also it doesn't help that both modern day lolita and fairy kei are far removed from when they first started both appearance and also community wise, so the importance of brand specific items have fallen

What >>10373096 and >>10373036 said, also the room that you see the most girls pose in is literally used to film porn in. It doesn't take much research to find out it's a fetish thing.

Nah, all of kawaii culture doesn't revolve around dressing up in actual children's clothing and pretending to be one while posing suggestively or flashing your panties.

so much this. there's a huuuuge difference between stuff being childlike and wearing children's clothing. that's what jojifuku is, wearing clothing from kids brands, not just wearing cute clothes.

It's not as if it doesn't attract people who are just simply interested in the fashion. If you feel like wearing it, wear it. Just because someone might use, say, one of my collars during sex doesn't mean it has the same connotation worn as an outfit. I do have some kids clothing in my closet, but I'm not into age play at all so... there's absolutely no use for it there.

If you like the clothing, wear it. Just maybe don't tag it jojifuku.

That's because of the porn studio, that uses jojifuku in it's name, and not because it's actual ageplay. Hence, do you really think the Kera magazine would make multiple features about jojifoku if it was a sex thing? No.
>>10373111
>that's what jojifuku is, wearing clothing from kids brands, not just wearing cute clothes.
According to this anyone wearing the glitter fancy sweaters is wearing jojifuku then because they are actually children's clothing.

Also the anon mentioned in >>10371683 posts photos of people literally wearing clothes from ageplay brands, those people usually don't wear kid's clothing but infant clothes in adult sizes which you don't find outside of ageplay specific shops.
