Personally i think people should cosplay whatever they want.

Would you shame a guy for not being buff enough/tall enough for Bane?
Would you shame a girl for not having big enough boobs for Yoko?
Would you shame a black person for cosplaying a white character?

Then why shame a fat person for cosplaying a thin character?

If you don't have the self respect to make yourself presentable, why should we respect you when we have to look at you? I have a gut I'm working off, I don't ever go for a shirtless costume.

Devil's advocate: the difference is you can't change your skintone or height, but you can change your weight.

Boob size doesn't count as an argument, as it's easy to create fake boobs with enough padding and push-up.

Moreover, I think cosplay is more effective when people pick a character they naturally resemble. There's no need to outright shame people, but cosplay just isn't going to look as good or convincing if the body type is completely different. See: OP pic. It doesn't look like Lara Croft to me. It doesn't make me think "wow, it's Lara Croft but in real life".

"you can change your weight"
Eh, not always. Sometimes people are on medications that make them gain weight or have something medically wrong with them that cause them to keep on weight. You just don't know, so I really don't judge whenever I see someone who is overweight. So to just change your weight isn't always possible or rather easy.

>> No.10269527

You can cosplay at any weight and I think people should be respectful and hold back their negative comments for overweight cosplayers. But you should also not expect to get a ton of attention or praise if you're an overweight cosplayer, because it's likely just not going to look the same as a fit person cosplaying a fit character. They should still have fun with it, put effort into their cosplay, all that, just don't expect the same kind of validation and attention that thin cosplayers get. It's not meant to sound discouraging, it's just a fact that people in shape are going to fit the proportions of an anime character better than an overweight person will, and the internet loves pretty ladies in general so they will still get most of the attention. In the end though, dressing up for fun should be something anyone can participate in, and it costs nothing to keep your opinions about someone's weight to yourself and let them enjoy the hobby.

As someone who was involved in the eating disorder community (I was an active member on MPA with access to locked threads) and a cosplayer I find that a lot of people who get all riled up about fat cosplayers use the same narrative as meanspo anorexics. It's not about health, it's about fuckability. I've seen severely underweight and unhealthy girls praised on here and hey, they usually have great costumes!
As long as their costume is dope and they look good, I'm going to ask for their picture or give them a follow. If it's a great costume why does weight matter? Haha

Weight and body type affect how good a costume looks. It goes both ways--a skinny guy cosplaying Homer Simpson won't look as good as a guy with a real gut.

>Would you shame a guy for not being buff enough/tall enough for Bane?
Tall enough? No. You can't control your height. You Not buff enough? You can control that to a large extent.
>Would you shame a girl for not having big enough boobs for Yoko?
Being that 1) we live in an era where breast implants are inexpensive, safe, and easy to get and 2) Yoko isn't all that busty IMHO....yeah, I'd say that they have no excuse.
>Would you shame a black person for cosplaying a white character?
Well now that's just racist! No I would not shame them for that.
>Then why shame a fat person for cosplaying a thin character?
I don't shame fat people for cosplaying thin characters. I simply ignore them, because their attempt to cosplay has failed, no matter how good their craftsmanship is.

>>10269527
>You can cosplay at any weight and I think people should be respectful and hold back their negative comments for overweight cosplayers.
That is exactly what I do. In fact, I also hold back any positive comments, praise, or recognition for them as well. If you are twice the weight of the character you are trying to portray, then you kinda failed.

>Would you shame a black person for cosplaying a white character?
100%. Even more so for crossplaying scum.

Fuck off. I've specifically cosplayed as canonically fat characters when I was bulking because I know I wouldn't serve any other thin or fit character justice.

Stop gaslighting rare occurrences. This is the exact mentality that keeps fat people fat.

It's very, very rare for someone to be seriously unable to change their weight. A lot of medications and so on that "cause weight gain" do so because they increase appetite, not because they change the way the body metabolizes food.

And honestly it's fine that you believe that, and you aren't obligated to give any kind comments to people whose cosplay you don't appreciate. As long as you're not outwardly being mean about it, that's really all anyone's asking for.

>> No.10270738

No problem with body types in cosplay. It just gets really weird to me when people don't outgrow kiddy cartoons and they think cosplaying is still an appropriate thing to do. Nothing irks me more than seeing a 40 year old dress up in a revealing cosplay in a convention with children around; especially when these characters are from cartoons aimed at children. These socially retarded people are doing it for attention, I get it, but there's a line where it goes from being a "hobby" to a "problem"
In my eyes, it's exactly the same issue I have with fursuiters. Old, ugly, socially awkward cunts who have sweaty sex in these costumes, don't wash them, and then go to conventions and cuddle children; except it's a 30-40 year old cougar with their sweaty ass cheeks and saggy tits hanging out, brushing past children in a crowded hall.

>> No.10270832

>Is anon really wrong though?
Yes, yes he is. Cosplay quality is based off of integrity, construction, and performance. If it were based off fuckability, then the quality of a cosplay changes based on who is looking at you. That doesn't make any sense.
