I'm trying to make the mask and cape from pic related from scratch but don't have a sewing machine or know how to use one. Would hand sewing be ok or should I take it somewhere?

>> No.10266108

>>10265966
A wig would look best but if you really don't want to and don't care about looking exact you could use colored hair wax or something like overtone which is like color depositing hair conditioner stuff. I've never used either but I've heard good things about both. The hair wax is temporary and the overtone takes a few washes to get out.

>>10265975
Hand sewing would be fine, but will take a long time to do. Consider using hem tape and an iron. You just sandwich the tape between the fabric and iron it down. The tape melts and creates a strong bond that can be washed and worn countless times. Super easy. You could do it in 15-20 minutes

Easy mode: sew thread or ribbon loops to the middle of the bow, and to the corners of the bow ends. Bobby pin to the wig. Criss-cross your bobby pins so they don't slip.
Average mode: sew the bow right onto the wig. You can always clip the threads and remove the bow later.
Pro mode: pick up alligator or comb clips from a wig or hair product supplier. Sew or glue the clips to the bow along the bottom edge.

Pair these attachment methods with a fabric stiffening method for best results.

The samurai had many layers:
Juban- white under clothes
Kimono- do I need to explain?
Belt- obi: literally a length of fabric specific to your waist measurement to tie your kimono closed.
Hakama- depending on use it’s either a full pleat “skirt” for court or pants for riding.
Kataginu- exaggerated shoulder overwear
These are all part of the courtiers outfit known as a kamishimo.
Shoes- Geta
Socks- tabi
Do not forget that there are multiple swords and that your hakama are tied a certain way, your kimono folds a certain way, and have a good time. Hopefully this finds you in time for you to look up and acquire all you need.

Just here to comfy post about all the things I’m looking forward to for my favorite season.

I did a light parade earlier in the season, so I get to rewear the sparkly dress I made for that again later this month to a pub crawl. I don’t usually get to wear stuff twice so yay. I’m also going to two gothy events. One I think is more like a bar/club/costume party affair so I’m making a robe a la francaise (Marie Antoinette style) black gown for that, and I’ll wear a raven skull mask. I’ve also got a quick lolita event the day of Halloween. Just shopping and drinks with friends but I’m excited for that too! And last thing, I got invited to a spooky graveyard tour the weekend right after which is supposed to be Victorian era, so I’ll be making an 1880’s bustle dress for that. I’m torn between going for all black and going for cozy fall colors like burnt orange.

Thank you for listening to me ramble. I love Halloween season.

I could use some help figuring out what to use to nail down parts of my Saltzpyre costume.

I'll be making the capotain from scratch, I'm thinking of just finding a witch hat and cutting bits off, then sticking a candle and some purity seals. Shouldn't be too hard.

The jacket is another story. I'm not sure where to look or what exactly there is which has the same style. It's like a trench coat but more slim-fitting than most - almost like a woman's coat. In fact that's what I've been looking for so far. Couldn't find the exact style so far, though. The mantle will be tricky to find, especially in the same color as the coat if it's separate. The belts are simple enough.

The gun and rapier should be no problem, though I don't know where to find a flintlock replica. I'm not too picky about the weapons.

The Gloves and boots likewise shouldn't be too big a problem for me, either. That goes for the pants and undershirt as well.

Help me out, lads. I could really use a bit of advice. I don't want to turn to /fa/ on this one since I fear they're going to be intent on killing me financially.

Stand collar. Jacket with stand collar.

As for buying the full set vs buying it piecemeal. You probably want to check first how much time you have and whether everything will arrive in time for Halloween (or whatever you want to wear it to).

Second, realise that you're spending time and money on this for practically no reason at all. So, if you find it enjoyable to hunt down the costume pieces, then hunt them down seperately, not because it's a "good" choice (there aren't any "good" choices, they all waste time and money), but because it's fun and you enjoy it. If you find no joy in that, then why bother? Outsource it to the costume-maker and just buy the full set in that case.

Last, realise that most costume-makers cut corners. Most of them fit a little wonky, jackets aren't really jackets (they're usually constructed like shirts rather than an actual jacket), and some details might not be what you think they should be. If this is something that really bothers you, then never order a full costume, make it yourself.

In general, most of this costume looks like it would need to be custom made (ie. commissioned). You might be able to score a few pieces like the scarf/cape, sword, and ninja wear from Halloween stores, but the armor, snakeskin bolero, and cyclops-esque helmet, and boots would need to be custom made. Are you willing to craft them or were you hoping to buy premade?

I don't use a dremel, I just sand it by hand and I find that if I don't finish by wet sanding with an extra fine sandpaper, I get a rough texture. Also, if you're working with floormats or the like, those holes might just be the minor imperfections you get with lower quality material.

It could be, but you'll still need to set the pencil with a powder. I've never done it myself, but you might be able to use translucent powder or baby powder instead of eyeshadow. A clear brow gel might work. I like to layer it over the shadow, but I don't see why you couldn't get the same result with just the pencil and gel. Also, the color of the pencil should be able to match your wig, it's pretty opaque.

Nice choice. Taako is a great character to choose for a beginner because there's so much freedom in interpreting how you would like to bring him to life. The first step is to gather inspiration. Look at Taako cosplay, wizard cosplays, larps, movies, d&d characters, etc. Just put a whole mood board of inspirations together either digitally or physically and start analyzing why you like each piece. Take note of color schemes, outfit silhouettes (ie. flowly pieces vs. structured pieces like the cosplay's kimono/robe vs. the tight fitted pants), and accessories. Draw or make collages of different outfit combinations that you like and see which one speaks to you. Try to come up with at least two or three. Then, separate what you can make or buy. Items like the ears, wig, bracer, and wizard hat for example. Set those aside and start searching through stores (thrift stores would be great for this project). You can see in the pic related that the cosplayer unified the outfit by matching the hat's accent to the robe. Very stylish. After you've knocked out your purchasable pieces, start listing the tools and materials to make the non-purchasable ones. You can commission the wizard hat or make your own. Kinpatsu cosplay has this great wizard hat tutorial out right now that has a lot of variations to it, but there's also plenty of free resources online too.

Best of luck. Do that fancy boi justice.

i don't know if you guys remember this crazy motherfucker, but he twisted a knob and it jacked with his voice. my costume has nothing specifically to do with the techno union guy, but i want that voice thing because that's awesome and i don't know how to make it work in real life.

it seems so simple; small speaker, earpiece, knobby-thing, but i can't find anything that would work at all. if you can't tell, i am definitely not an audio engineer.

I did something similar for a ren faire

I hand stitched the hat from some fake leather pieces, it looked like shit but was easier than I expected considering I didn't sew shit before

For the jacket, try looking around for any western wear stores. I found a oilcloth duster that worked really well. If you're wanting to do the slashed tunic as well, you could just roll the sleeves inward so it shows, but my getup isn't that complex yet

Hope yours works out!

maybe if I used a knob that sticks to a phone screen and lined it up to poke out right where i need it to? if I could find the right app, that is. it'd have the added bonus of being nearer to my face.

though i would need to find something more secure than the elastic straps i'm currently using with my costume, otherwise the added weight will just end up tugging it all down.

I'm new to the costume/cosplay online scene, but in the last few days I've noticed lots of people mentioning TAZ when looking at costumes (for instance, someone on amazon wanted a gandalf beard to be Merle). I'm on my second or third listen through (just finished rockport) but have never heard anyone reference it irl, is this podcast just a lot more popular than I thought?
Also good luck!

Unrelated note addressed to the thread, my gf has a sewing machine and I have a closeby hobby lobby/michaels/Joann's and 2 days to work on it. With little experience (just helping her make pillows and such) how possible would it be to make a passable gandalf robe/hat/belt? Would materials be cheaper than buying the costume? I have long hair but would have to buy a beard, I think it's $11 on amazon. Also any tips for TEMPORARILY making my hair grey?

Oh very much so. I'd say it's the McElroy's second most popular podcast behind MBMBAM. I see people with IPRE patches. Taako and Angus are all over TikTok, they're the most popular cosplays. Lup too.

> how possible would it be to make a passable gandalf robe/hat/belt?
If you completely clear your schedule and work morning till late night, yeah.

>Would materials be cheaper than buying the costume?
Hm, hard to say. I'd suggest looking for Gandalf costumes online and then comparing its contents to the total $$ of materials you'll need. Remember that you don't have to completely make everything on your own nor wear every part of a pre-purchased costume. If you like a premade hat, but not the robe, wear it. If you can purchase a base hat to build upon, it'll save you a lot of time and some money. It's really up to your preference, skill, time, and budget. For the robe, you can use bedsheets (like wool or something). If they're not the right color, you can dye them. It'll be wayyyy cheaper than purchasing the fabric. The belt is an easy thrift.

>Also any tips for TEMPORARILY making my hair grey?
Anything temporary isn't going to look as neat as a wig, but your run of the mill hair spray or chalk should do just fine.

spend the next few days getting your laugh, speech, and body language to be a PERFECT copy.

Don't ignore the small details of the costume. Notice the eyebrows are completely covered by the makeup, and fake ones are drawn above them. Notice that the suit is a little big in the shoulders, and a little long, but the sleeves fit right, and the pants and vest fit perfectly. Notice that the shirt he's wearing under the vest is a casual, thicker, and not shiny material, get the colors right. Get a pair of shoes that matches his, don't just wear whatever you already have that's similar.

You could get a prop cigarette too, I'm pretty sure those exist.

I don't remember what color his socks were, but find out and match it.

Most of these probably seem like things people won't notice, but it all adds up, and they make the difference between a low-effort Halloween costume, and something that impresses. Any small inconsistency can break the immersion and ruin the illusion.

This is my first piece of costume leatherwork I've every done. Until now all I've done is small goods like wallets and holsters.

I was inspired by Darkest Dungeon which was the first game which portrayed Plague Doctors as an offensive unit. So I thought "What would a Plague Doctor look like with modern combat gear.

Here's a question though, what's a better way to black out the eye holes? I didn't get this build done until about an hour before trick or treaters showed up so all I thought to do was sew in a patch made from my girls old leggings.
