Some maid Cafés/ Maids have themes, for example: I work in a convention Maid/Butler Café in germany and we have an overall Idol theme, although we jazz it up to fit the con theme if it has one. Last time it was an anniversary theme so we decorated the room with lots of balloons and made funfetti cake, did birthday themed dances and so on. Next con will be magical girl and some of our maids are practicing Wasuta's Choco beam! Most of the maids have Idol names like Atsuko or Yurika, and the butlers like to go with Vkei names like Tetsu or Ruki. As for maid themes, my personal theme is that of an elf/sometimes vampire, my persona is a little more calm and casual with a bit of mystery mixed in and you can usually talk about things like music, video games or D&D with me.

But I do agree, having a full backstory like that is a bit much...

Did anyone go to any of the panels at May MCM? I had time to kill and needed to sit down while waiting for a friend so went to some talk about 'body positivity' in cosplay that was hosted by two Suicide Girls costhots.

I know this post is 2 weeks old but they might still be lurking.

Basically this group are more of a Maid-cafe-themed idol group roleplay than a Maid cafe, at least at their apperances in sunnycon. They are enjoyable enough, the first year had the tall guy seemed a bit awkward and uncomfortable but I saw him last year and he was doing really well and really into it, but announced he was leaving and this was his last show.

I know they all have really over the top backstories, like one is an angel, another a star-princess, the other is a demon queen, one is a Yuki Onna ice-maiden, another is a combat robot reprogrammed to be kawaii, another is a combat robot not reprogrammed, but trying to be kawaii anyway, one of the butlers is as far as I can tell just Krieger from Archer. It's entertaining enough but totally over the top, would totally have sufficed if her backstory was "A cute angel looking for true love!" or "A Cupid-Angel with a taste for bad ships."

It was okay but it felt like there was a divide between "professional cosplayers" and "everyone else" and everyone else got ignored. A lot of the professional cosplayers went on tedious political diatribes and talked about how terrible objectification is whilst wearing body hugging latex or pedo bait. Also the convention had some really nice vendors. Especially material vendors. That sounds like what I expected the first year, but it was actually quite friendly and down to earth since it was a new con. I'm not surprised it's polished up since, as that sounds like exactly what their image would suggest.

It's entirely possible that they needed to meet up to rehearse the skit part but that time needed to be used for family.
Maybe there were a few minor bits to sort which could have been handled if not for the set-back. We don't know, and we can't judge them for that. They could yet pull out and I still wouldn't point fingers even if they did.

I think pulling out would have our chances suffer more and they probably chose the route that was the least damaging overall. At least this way they've fulfilled duties to both their family and to their country.

I don't know how it works but I imagine the next ones in line would be even less prepared and our chances would take a huge hit as a result and we'd probably look even more embarrassing than we do already. I think it'd look worse to send an entirely new team two weeks before the comp. Not to mention whether they could get the time off to go from work so we may have had to go teamless.

Except they've stated that they'll be bringing the costumes so for most part they are done, that's why I was theorising that the part that isn't ready is the performance. They probably planned to have time to work on it around now before the comp so it's fresh in their heads but that's been shafted.

A lot of teams choose not to put out many progress images, I don't know why exactly, maybe they want to keep it a secret? But it seems more common to put out the progress logs after everything is done and dusted.

But in all honesty the state of our competition scene at the moment has me wanting to try.
