I would actually say that thin is not ideal, ideally I think you want the body of a teenager but with a LITTLE bit of fat to move around. The reason is because clothing typically fits more voluptuously to anime characters, even when they are skinny. If you've got a few spare ounces then you're going to fill out outfits better and give them the 'irl anime' look. A lot of characters who wear OTK socks that are skinny from most angles will always have a slight muffin top in the thighs, human bodies don't work that way so I think the better 2.5D compromise is to have the outfit look exaggerated against your body type than to have it perfectly fit with no real silhouette.
