I’m starting to think im getting a too old looking for nanchatte. It’s been my go-to look since middle school (10+ years ago, god kill me) but I’m starting to feel the hurt that I might need to move on. I don’t think you can age well with it since “school” is so internalized even if you just try to look at it as “preppy”.
Anybody got any more mature pics? Preferably with thigh highs still.

(It’s actually a selfpost but I didn’t call it lol, and yeah I believe I saw this coord in a thread before so I consider it my best one)

Obviously I looked bad since I didn’t know what I was doing til college but in middle school-early high school I had three “coords” I can remember:
>hot topic pleated skirt with huge black ribbon on a necklace chain (the classic)
>red skirt and tie set that were definitely higher quality costume pieces
>black skirt worn overtop a white cotton lace skirt complete with black and white striped stockings so I could be like Misa from Death Note
But I actually dont remember anyone saying anything except my band director who dubbed me “Living Anime Character” when he gave a title to every member lel
I just called it “school uniform” clothes

>>10154626
Yeah I’m soon turning 26 and I feel like I’m showing it. I might only last another year before I feel fully uncomfortable dressing like a high schooler.
I found one of my old HS pics. It’s the least shitty of the proto- “nanchatte” fits I described lol. I wish I had the same passion for clothes then as I do now and had found tips online on how to fine-tune a proper coord, when I was in the prime for wearing it. Oh well I guess time stops for no one.

I didn’t look purposefully for them but the only time I saw them was at a little 3-pair-for-1000円 sock store in an indoor mall. Not the chain store called kutsushita but it was basically the same. Like the equivalent to a sock corner in a low end department store in the States. Sock stores like that are probably in every Japanese mall. This one was EBeans in Sendai if you happen to be there.
>>10159296
Honestly just making your own seems to be the easiest way of getting sukeban and gakuran unless you want to pay Mercari SS’s. Could get one of the costume ones and take it apart to use the pattern if you’re new to sewing.

I feel you. I'm 29 now and I feel like I'm just about starting to get to that point where maybe I should stop. But I also love all my clothes still and I feel like I look fine in them so idk. Maybe it'll naturally work itself out and once I stop looking good in the clothes I won't want to wear them and won't miss them.

Regarding more mature styling: it's kinda hard if you're still wearing a short skirt. I find that eliminating either one of the defining schoolgirl traits (either the pleats or the plaid) helps a bit. More fitted blazers instead of shapeless blazers, generally more tailored stuff, oxford heels instead of sneakers, etc. kind of helps I think. and longer skirts help too, though then you can't really wear thigh highs anymore. Pic related was me trying to do more preppy and less nanchatte, though how I successful I was I leave up to you to judge lol. I wish my vest was made of a thicker material.

>>10159296

Over the last few years ive put on a bunch of weight due to medication. maybe one day if i can get off meds i'll be able to loose it, but as of right now im struggling to admit that im both too old and too fat for nanchatte, and that I need to give up on j fashion alltogether. I want to wear cute clothes but i cant find any american brands that make cute stuff.

You are probably fine. There are a lot of overweight people in J-fashion that do just fine. The important thing is to be realistic on what looks good on you. Buy stuff, try it on, if it looks bad sell it.
If it really bugs you that much lose weight. You can lose weight on medication, it is just harder. If it is medication for depression or anxiety (been there) it will help you in more ways than one to exercise. Do your best, anon.

Late reply, but they're make of the same fabric as their long sleeve school shirts. The white is a little see through if you wear a dark bra, so I'd recommend a tank top underneath.

Thank you, anon! I'm mostly curious about the bows that come from the sets (like the bottom row, middle picture) since they are a bit more expensive. The ones being sold separately are so cheap, I'm probably just going to go ahead and order them before the sale is over.

I have a few bodyline skirt sets including costume657 (most of the ones I bought were older/off the site now) and the fabric used for matching bows are generally made of the same fabric as the skirt. The bow with costume657 is thick material, not shiny or thin, but I've had full uniform sets (top+tie+skirt) that were thinner material, again same as with skirt. I think most of the skirt sets on the site now are the more thick, higher quality ones

Does anyone have any experience ordering from seifukudoncky? It looks like what they sell there are parts and sets of actual school uniforms, rather than just imitations, but as a guy most of my options coming from nanchatte brands are limited anyway (understandably, since there's not really the market for it). To me this looks like my best bet at getting something that's realistic and looks good - I was just wondering if anyone here had past experiences with them and could vouch for it or warn me of any pitfalls. I get that the girls' uniform parts are about twice the price of the guys' so I'm not seriously expecting anything in response, but I figured I'd ask anyway.

Using an SS is fairly straightforward - go to their site, submit links to what you'd like to buy, and pay the SS.

I wear it pretty much daily and 2 other people in my local community wear it occasionally. I think the way to get around it in more conventional workplaces which still do not require a specific dresscode is avoiding elements which are commonly associated with uniforms - or maybe just not combine them all together.
I find these to usually be bows, ties, cardigans that look like uniform cardigans (not sure how to say this otherwise), sailor collars and under the knees/mid calf or loose socks. I'll dump some outfits for reference.

I've never seen another one besides me, which made me a bit hesitant to post, but after finally getting the right loafers (combined with seeing that big inspiration dump someone did earlier in the thread) it seemed like the right time to throw an attempt out and see what people thought.
By the way, just in case anyone else has a problem with having above-average-Japanese-size feet like I did:
You're not likely to find loafers bigger than a size 28 in any nanchatte store, but that doesn't mean they don't exist. If you buy them online make sure you're careful of the width, not just the length. I ended up going through a couple rounds of "try on, send back" with Amazon Japan before I decided to actually get up and seek out a gaijin-size shoe store in Tokyo. The one I ended up going to helped a lot with figuring things out.

Excellent.

It's really rare to see guys do the fashion, and I feel like you're at a disadvantage bc there just seems to be less variety for dudes in nanchatte, and if you don't do it just right you risk coming across as a normie wearing a blazer and sweater vest. Coord on point tho.

On a totally unrelated note...I finally received all the packages from my monster Bodyline order. Since everything was so cheap I took a chance and ordered some thoughts I would not usually have (there's non-nanchatte items mixed in there). Some thoughts:

I'm very happy with all of the bows. They're all made of a thick, textured, matte fabric and cute colours. Consider they were all literally under 50 cents, I couldn't be happier. Costume 992 is bad. The shirt is cut nicely, the fabric itself is not terrible, but the collar is ridiculously stiff and so are the cuffs. I bet it's pretty sheer too, haven't tried it on long enough to see. The skirt is made out of the same good, thick material as the rest of the skirts tend to be, and the pattern is lovely, but it's a good 2-3 inches shorter. Considering that the regular skirts are short enough, it's gonna end up stripper short I'm sure. I will have to wear it in normie outfits with leggings or something I think. The bow that came with it was nice though, so it's not a complete waste.

The four skirts are great as always. Loving the pink one especially.

Costume 217 and 229 don't seem to be as nice as the other seifuku I've ordered from there, both in terms of the fabric thickness and detail quality (I also own costume 1101, 825, and bought 980 for a friend). So that's a shame. You get what you pay for though. I kind of want to keep 229 but 217 is the wrong size anyway so I will probably resell it to someone local.

con'td

The sweater vests are nice and soft, but the collar and arm holes do not have ribbed ends as would be proper, but are just kind of...sewn down. For the price I'll wear it, but I wouldn't buy them again, I'd rather spend the extra $5 and get nicer ones from taobao, or thrift. I got some cute colours though, the sky blue/turquoise is my fave so I'm happy. I also got off white and beige to round my wardrobe out a little.

I still gotta hit up taobao for cardigans, and once the end of summer sales are in full swing I plan on visiting a local store for some converse type shoes or cute girly sneakers. But for now I think I'm pretty happy with the variety in my wadrobe!

Do y'all have a sticky or recommended beginners guide?
I kinda want to try to wear seifuku for an upcoming con but I want to do it right... so far I gather bodyline and taobao/allie are okay stores for readymade seifuku type things? Any thing to look out for so you don't look like you just slapped on some sailor moon cosplay sans-wig?

>> No.10246260

>>10246212
I mean, number one, seifuku and serafuku are different things - seifuku is just school uniforms in general, while serafuku is specifically the sailor-style school uniform and such.
If you want a more western-style seifuku, like what a lot of Japanese high schools are using, then having a plaid skirt is a pretty good indicator that you're going for nanchatte seifuku rather than normal clothes.
If you want to wear serafuku, then don't shorten the skirt too much - that's what'll make it look like a wigless Sailor Moon cosplay more than anything.
Also recommended is looking into cardigans or vests, because they help in both styles. Having some sort of recognizable school emblem is a big plus, too (in Danganronpa, for example, each student has one on their clothes in some area).
That's my basic advice, any other anons want to jump in?

I think the thing you really should look out for is coming off too costume-ish. Like the first anon said, cardigans and the like are a good go to make it look more like Nanchatte Seifuku, especially if you're going for the sailor-fuku.
Fit is something I would mention as well - Nanchatte isn't really about showing off curves, the pieces on your top half should be quite boxy and not that formfitting.

Also imo, details like having the right shoes and such makes the whole vibe. If you're going for a sailor-fuku, skip out on the tight highs, it'll just look porn-y. Try knee-highs or even short, rolled socks, which is a recent trend.

Idk if you wear makeup but if you're going for a regular nanchatte look, keep it simple. If you wanna go kogal then go ham lol

Good luck, anon! I would love to see your finished coord, if you feel like sharing it!

Define Quality?

Some people here think the uniforms from Bodyline are good but honestly they are just polyester, at least the ones I got. They also don´t age well. I know some real uniforms are made out of polyester too (in UK for example) but I hate that material.
Most of the uniforms I got from AE seem to me more superior than Bodyline. They are made from heavy cotton and feel just good.
I´ve never seen a real japanese uniform in real life and I also never bought from Conomi&Co. so I can not compare. But I would pay a good portion if they aren´t made of polyester.

I don't know about the seifuku in your question, as I have never purchased from that brand. But I have purchased wool winter seifuku from various places. I have purchased 100% cotton seifuku too. Once of my favorite seifuku is from a shop called shimokawa tailors on etsy. Not sure if they have shops elsewhere, but the seifuku I have from there are amazing. Actual quality materials that you'd wear in normal clothing, no cheap costume poly. Sure, bodyline is okay for the price if you just want a costume, but I wish I would have saved all my money and purchased actual uniform quality seifuku instead, even though the price is much higher.

I didn't even really start nanchatte until around 25, 26. If you like it, go for it.

If you don't like the way some of the outfits look on you, or don't feel comfortable in it, that's something else entirely. If that's the case you could always go for a more preppy look, or longer skirts or something.

I've never been accused of any fetish shit, but I think people assumed I was a teen mom because I often got stink eye or people conspicuously looking away when I got on public transit with my daughter. Yes, I posted about this before lol. It doesn't really bother me, mostly I'm kind of sad that people have that attitude. One time, someone did ask what school I go to, and when I said it was just fashion they said "Oh ok." My Japanese prof also liked my outfits. Saying "harajuku fashion" lets you kind of get away with explaining more because people brush off as some weird but cool Japanese thing.

I don't think there's any harm in trying! At the very least, the nice thing about nanchatte is that you can dip your toes in without throwing a ton of cash at it. Bodyline and Taobao are both cheap and offer pretty cute options for skirts, sailor fuku, and sweaters. And you don't have to worry about legwear, footwear, purses, etc. as much as you do in lolita, there's lots of cute shit you can get at normie stores. It's also very thrift friendly if you like thrift shopping. As much as I love Conomi and all the beautiful stuff they produce, nanchatte is my chill fashion, while lolita is where I sink more money for expensive brand pieces.

... I've decided to, partly because of this thread, finally "jump the shark" and buy a complete sailor uniform set. Maybe I'll wait until I get my first internship. But anyway. Soon. I've been wearing nanchatte everyday for two years now, grade 12 and my first year at university. But I've only been wearing a blazer type of uniform without the blazer.
I also have a summer sailor shirt from conomi that I've worn a couple of times, but I never liked the shape of the collar. It's been a longtime dream of mine to wear my perfect school uniform, which for me is a particular sailor fuku ...
I've just started my second year at university and I'm realizing that I don't have a lot of time left to be wearing sailor fuku. I can keep wearing my other school uniform clothes after graduating if I just dress it up more "preppy"-like. I'm going into a field that doesn't have strict dress codes anyway. I can only wear a sailor uniform judgment-free (as good as it gets anyway) at school though. Thanks for reading my blog. I'll post pictures when I get it which may have to wait until I secure my first internship.

Male here

Incredibly stupid question and feel free to insult/haze but hear me out first. I’ve been trying to get more into the look/fashion but I straight up hate ties. I can’t stand wearing them for interviews or meetings but I also find bow ties even worse IMO. However I don’t want to go with nothing either. Would it be noticeable/cringey to go with a female ribbon? I know it’s much more feminine but I don’t care for my other options.

>> No.10275412

>>10275384
I think it's honestly a pretty bad idea. Your best choice is probably gonna be either tie your tie very loose (see >>10217231, >>10217243, >>10219596 for examples) or just go tie-less (cf. >>10217239, >>10225371). If you have enough of the nanchatte "flags" raised, the lack of a tie shouldn't hurt, but if you can tolerate wearing even a very loose one at all it'll go a long way towards helping the aesthetic.

what exactly do you hate about them? if you find them uncomfortable, a female ribbon wouldn't be very different and you're best off going without one.

It’s more the tying of one and even with a sweater/vest hiding most of it, I don’t like how big it is. As for bow ties, at least here in central FL it’s a more metrosexual fashion thing here which is t what I’m going for.

This part makes it sound like you're wearing massive boomer ties. Try something skinnier and thinner, easier to do for actual work stuff than nanchatte but plenty of Japanese school uniforms use relatively skinny ties as well. You can also just go tieless with a blazer or whatever but if you're doing it for nanchatte you have to have the look for it overall.

Looked at Conomi’s English website. Because I’m built like a chubby male I’m guessing their sizes are just too small for me? Like the skirts say W80, I’m assuming that’s waist in cm? I don’t know what some of the tips sizes are though, like 175A. There isn’t a legend or anything.

>> No.10277623

>>10277166
Yeah, W80 is the waist in CM. I find the sizing pretty comfortable tho, I usually measure my waist to be around 72cm, or 70 to go easy. I have a W69 skirt and you can add a couple of CM to it with the fastening on the side. If set to the widest setting, it almost falls off down to my hips.
175A and the sizes alike are weird - I haven't bought anything with that sizing, but if you scroll down the size guide should be just below the photos in the text, if you're on their global rakuten site.

I can tell a few people think it's super weird, but nobody has ever said anything negative (to my face anyway). My Japanese professor gave me a Seventeen magazine.
Though like >>10278689 said, there's a VERY high Chinese international student population at my school so there's already a few students wearing similarly quirky (think cute/elegant looking) fashion. Also my school is known for being the least fun, most serious and unsocial school in the country, so most people just think about their studies and not much else. There's a school down the street that's known for parties. Maybe you'd get more negative feedback at that kind of school. Just my two cents.

is there a particular search term for these socks (eng or chinese for taobao)? I feel like just using "ankle socks" won't really help me find ones with the thick fold like that.

In another vein, any stores that cater to plus sizes for skirts? I'm working at losing weight and have lost a bit, but for the time being I'd like to invest in a few pieces so I can still wear them as I continue to slim down (since they often have adjusters or shirring). My waist is around 97cms or so, but the issue usually is getting skirts over my hips as well (around 118cm)..

Any guidance is greatly appreciated. I've browsed taobao but had little luck so far, and conomi sizing stops around 85cm or so.

This concern comes up pretty often, and the answers never set a specific age limit -- as they shouldn't. If you're worried about appearing as though you're trying to dress up as a high schooler, you can still achieve a more mature look while integrating some nanchatte elements. For example, I'd lean more towards blazers and less towards "cutesy" things like oversized sweaters. It's up to you though! I wouldn't completely restrict any particular garment. It's all in creating a balance.

A lot of real sailor uniforms are actually like this, with a sailor shirt over a jumperskirt instead of a skirt, for the winter uniform usually. I find this to be more comfortable than wearing a skirt because the jumperskirt is usually less restricting. It's also warmer which is nicer for the winter. However, do note that this can be less "cute" depending on your build because they make them to fit people based on height instead of waist. For example, my size for skirts is W60 but the jumperskirts are seemingly only ever made at a with a minimum waist size of 68cm, so I'd always be wearing 3-4 sizes larger for my waist. If you happen to be a waist size that actually fits then I'm sure there's no difference. Pic related, it's a real uniform.

The one in your pic has a sailor top which is why I went on about the sailor uniforms. But in regards to the short jackets part, real school uniforms have those too, called "boleros", which may or may not be worn on top of a jumperskirt. Typically these are for middle schools. I think these are very interesting because there's a lot of variety not found in blazer uniforms. Since they're short, I think they're also cuter than blazers. But I think to some, they look very formal and not "cute". Pic related is one that I think is very cute and interesting but maybe it doesn't really fit the fashion.
