Thanks, I have a bunch of ideas for how to do Sea Fairy Cookie but it will require a lot of experimentation, we'll see :) and the picture you're asking about is from a graphic novel called Elinor Jones, I don't know if it's been translated into English but it's a 3 volume series centered around a Victorian couture house so it's chock full of gorgeous dress designs, this one is the cover of book 3

I'm the Pamitha anon from above, and honestly there are tons of cosplays I'd love to do, but am hesitant based on obscurity. It's not that no one knows them, as some of these things are popular in their own communities, just not too common in my own.

I’m not sure I want to go through any degree of bodypaint for a Sailor Moon monster of the week, but I love the hurdler’s (ridiculous) design. Maybe if I got a group together.

Not super obscure but also probably not going to be recognized by the majority of most congoers now. I've also never done a revealing cosplay, so I'd be really nervous about ever doing Kazumi, but I can dream.

There’s honestly a fuckton of old CLAMP shit I would cosplay but RG Veda seems to be the one thing that I can bring up to CLAMP fans and they don’t know about it. Classic Ashura has been on my list for years.

Well, keep in mind that all this literally happened 10 fucking years ago so my memory is a little hazy.

The author switched publishers and announced that there'd be 12 volumes instead of 10. This was just after volume 7 I believe ? Now, honestly volume 7 was pretty bad for me. Recycled jokes, fucking Sylver the walking cliché, etc. Since Magister's identity was supposed to be revealed in the last volume, people got pretty pissed about having to wait 2 more volumes and started complaining in the forums.

Enters L, the forum's admin. L had been a pretty devout follower of the author, but she was fed up. She changed her tune, shat on volume 7 and said that the series getting longer for barely any reason felt like the author was trying to milk it for money. Now keep in mind everyone involved including L was pretty much between the age of 12 to 16 or 17. Was her post rude ? Yes. Did it reflect the mindset of quite a percentage of the forum ? Yes. Did the author completely overreact ? Well...

The author (a 45+ years old woman at the time, if my math checks out) went absolutely apeshit, laid into L who tried to apologize, posted a "woe is me" blog entry, and banned L. People got maaaaaaad (14-years-old me included, I must admit). The author had a pretty hands-off approach to the forum, and mainly kept to her blog. To see her swoop in at the first sign of criticism was a betrayal, especially since she'd carefully curated her "cool, hip author in touch with her young fans". So people rallied together and basically whipped a shitstorm. Fun fact : the blog posts before and after the one where she bitches about L all have over 2000 comments. The one about L though ? 10 comments. Did someone go on a deleting spree?

In response, the author simply deleted the forum. Way to go. In the end, this left me sour enough that I never went past volume 7, and since apparently Magister's identity never got confirmed and the series went to shit, looks like I dodged a bullet

The author's reaction reminds me of another YA writer who nuked his forum after intense criticism of his last book, though. I guess YA authors really are all cut from the same cloth.

Nothing wrong with your taste, it's all a matter of preference. It's also been like 10 years since I read the books so maybe I'll change my mind if I open them again (I always disliked book 4, for example, while many people loved it). I found Sylver grating because he just kinda popped out of nowhere and hit so many clichés (to me), but at that point I was pretty much done with Robin too.

And yeah, even after all that I'd still be pretty pumped to see a Tara cosplay at a con. Despite the drama, that series was an important part of my life growing up.

Black Jack was one of the first mangas I read and I absolutely loved Kiriko ! I was super happy when I learned that he was getting his own spin-off, so much that I've been buying the volumes even though I don't understand Japanese at all. I love old CLAMP stuff, RG Veda is obscure for sure but not as much as Man of Many Faces or Clamp School Detective. Plus you can probably still get attention by virtue of just looking cool. Personally I want to cosplay from Angelic Layer or Magic Knight Rayearth at some point, they're both more well-known though.

In english speaking communities- yes. It seems very popular still in Spanish speaking comms. I cosplayed two variations of Shampoo last year and was recognised by minimal people and those that did were at least pushing 30. I made Ranma's red outfit last year around Christmas too so haven't had chance to debut it at a con yet but I'm expecting more of a response to that though seen as Ranma and Uresai Yatsura appears to of had a small revival in the recent past.

I'd love to do either Comet or Kitty-N's alternate costumes from Bust A Groove 2. They'd both be relatively complicated though, one would require custom rollerblades and the other is technically form-fitting mech style armor. Also they're both, y'know, the hidden second costumes of an unpopular dancing game from 20 years ago, so.

That's a lot of good taste.

If you're in Japan or you can just do it really fucking well then Simone from Nier will be recogized by anyone who actually played N;A and would be a spectacular enough costume that you might draw attention from people who just appreciate the design even if they do not know who it is.

Meg and Pamitha are probably only going to recognised if you have a Zagreus or a group of Exiles respectively. I love both their designs but Supergiant is pretty niche as fuck; only the Kid and Red will be recognised and even then not by many people.

For quite literally two decades, even before I knew that cosplay was a thing, I have wanted to cosplay only one character.

The male main character from Legend of Mana.

I tried, I honestly tried, to learn a bit about sewing. Life intervened and I ended up having to work 65 hour workweeks for two years shortly after I took up sewing and shot that down. I tried to find a professional who could make it for me, but every single person quoted me over 2.5 grand. I earn less than 30k a year takehome, I cannot afford it, period. Now I am 31, out of shape, and my hair on top has thinned out so badly I look like a pedophile if I grow it longer than an inch. I used to rock a six pack and have hair exactly like this character reaching down to my waist. Everything is darker in my life, and I feel like if I could just get back into shape, get a good wig, and do this one cosplay, it might, I dunno. Give me hope?

Here is your best bet: Make what you can, get a wig, and commission what you cannot.
This cosplay has a lot of armor, which is why it is so expensive to commission. Take your time and watch tutorials on armor making. There are a lot out there so you can learn to do it a lot of ways. Craft foam is the cheaper option and thermoplastics are more expensive. Both can look good if you do it well.
My advice is to go the cheap route and then as you get better move into the more expensive stuff.
If this is really the one cosplay you will ever want to do just do it. It might not be perfect at first, but you can go back and upgrade it as you get better.
Just remember that Legend of Mana is a beloved series. It isn't that obscure in the scheme of things. Even if it is not a perfect cosplay people will be happy to see someone who likes something they like.

Definitely not obscure in Japan, but overseas, it's definitely obscure. At the bare minimum, I'd love to do a Kamen Rider Kuuga cosplay that's accurate to the stage show versions (visible clamps on the gold sides of the helmet, eye holes in the red compound eye lenses, the bottom of the armor is orange for some reason.)

The dream would be to make one fully accurate to the stunt version suit, but figuring out exactly what the symbols look like is a nightmare, not to mention the helmet.

I've partially built the Culter Dei heavy armour, but I may need to scrap some of it. The engraving on the trim is what is really killing me, though.

Having no experience with building helmets doesn't help either.

Yugioh itself isn't obscure but anybody who cosplays a monster that isn't DMG related is pretty rare. I wish I could get a Yugioh charmers group together. I know DOTA 2 isn't exactly obscure, but I feel like when it comes to cosplaying MOBA characters that aren't cute waifu bait, nobody really recognizes who you are. I don't really care though, I'm just determined to make a giant bug and I just really love Weaver.

The Battle Tendency anime is only seven years old, and Joseph has been a reoccurring character in later parts, albeit in an older form. A protagonist from one of the most popular anime of all time doesn't just fade out of everyone's memory just because the specific portion of the show isn't airing anymore. I highly doubt that people aren't recognizing Joseph cosplayers, but I guarantee that they just won't approach them for a picture because of JoJo cosplay oversaturation or because he's just not as well liked as the other JoJos. A JoJo protagonist doesn't belong in this thread, anon.
