Just moved in with boyfriend and slowly un-sadboy-ing his apartment with feminine touches. Obviously the main issue is storage, literally all the closets are full. Whats some of the best space saver items/tips you have? I already gave away nearly 10 hefty bags full of clothes and can fit my entire closet/lolita including shoes in two suitcases, so downsizing isn't an option.

Currently on the hunt for something aesthetic to stand above our washer that doesn't bolt into the walls, but nothing seems wide enough.

you'd almost have to build something, or maybe find some kind of storage thing that hangs from the ceiling and doesn't look too frumpy. what are you looking to store in it?

Bed risers maybe? Also see if there's any furniture you guys have that can be replaced with something that functions as storage, like use a large chest instead of a regular coffee table, a TV unit with cabinets or drawers, etc.

I feel like these cute rooms are really nice because they don't actually have a lot of storage that is needed for irl stuff. Like it's nice and not messy because it's pretty minimal and set up in a way to look perfect for a picture.

Just things like linens and stuff, mostly to help free up closet space. I might crack down and have him do a super major closet purge too because I hate the look of overstuffed drawers/closets when I know the wearer doesn’t use half the stuff in them

>> No.9750500

>>9750373

Do the purge.

If there's a hell of a lot of stuff try to split the closet up into sections. I recently had to do this to help incorporate my OH's things into mine. We divided it into the top, rail and bottom for the bigger segment, and then there was a smaller one in the side which we did all in one go. Just DONT rip everything out in one go otherwise you'll burn out and all this shit will be on your bed. If possible take it to another room so you can escape it when you call it quits at an awkward point. I
Go item by item and ask him when the last time he wore it was. If it's been a year or more then toss it unless its an item for specific situations (fancy attire). If there's an item he's super anxious not to get rid of then turn the coathanger the opposite way to everything else. If he hasn't taken it off in another six months, then toss it. You'll know because you'll either have seen him wear it or the coathanger will have been taken out and turned the other way.
Oh! and while it's empty give it a good clean and a wipe down. You'd be amazed how much crap gets into these places. It'll be so worth it in the end.

I personally love clusterfuck rooms like >>9749740, >>9749777, >>9749735, and what I can see of >>9749738. I don't like rooms such as >>9749749, but only because the furniture doesn't really match the rest of the room. I don't like >>9749680 just because it's poor at storing clothing, toiletries, and miscellaneous stuff.

I'd say clusterfuck rooms are the harder to pull off because any messiness outside cute objects throws the whole thing off, and it can be very expensive or time consuming to make all the furniture coordinate color-wise. I understand it's not a walk in the park to repaint furniture. I personally love them though.

Still okay with seeing the less then perfect ones just because it's enjoyable seeing a room that is actually used as opposed to show rooms and sets.

This is also a really good idea! I second the wiping down thing, I stole the shelves where linens use to live and it was covered with dust. Now my clothes live happily in ikea boxes in a cleaner environment.

This is an uphill battle gulls, living with another person with opposite tastes takes a toll. Gulls with roomies, whats the hardest thing you've had to compromise on?

Mine is this couch. Dude loves it because "omg electric reclining seats!" but its such a sad shade of brown to me and too bulky for our europoor apartment. I think he realizes though because I caught him looking at couches the other day...

I use to live with a long-term boyfriend, and this is how we handled it. I got free range of the bedroom and bathroom so those were girly. However, the living room and kitchen were his domain as those were the two rooms him and his friends would predominately hang out.

I had the bathroom pink/purple and the bedroom girly and weebish, and then I decorated the living room to resemble a Victorian smoking parlor or upscale opium den so it had lots of deep red like the curtains and rugs, darker jewel tones, classical and famous paintings (In this case, Chat Noir, Salvador Dali, and some framed velvet paintings I found at a yard sale), dark wood and metal surfaces, and in general things with a masculine tone. The kitchen was also wood tones with a coffee theme because he loved his coffee.

You don't want to invade his space anymore then he wants to invade on your space so it's best to compromise and try to have different parts of the apartment catered to each person's tastes.

Since we broke up, my bedroom is now gothy and the bathroom purely purple, but I still keep the living room and kitchen with the same masculine or gender neutral smoking parlor theme to appeal to male visitors and family members. They tend to feel better hanging out somewhere that's not exclusively girly.

I loooove the look of rich woods and leathers. The sucky part is the place is so small, so anything dark makes it look instantly smaller. I’m compromising by trying to go for more natural/neutral tones that are on the lighter side like greys, whites and lighter woods. Lucky me I get to decorate the bedroom, and it wallpapered with lavender/pinkish/grey flowers and two of the walls are a light purple. Getting some matching linens and curtains to tie everything together.

Oh, I was just giving an example of the look I used to create a masculine space. I think monochrome could work too. My first apartment had wood paneling so it really worked with the wood paneling. Now that I live in a smaller place, I still keep the darker scheme, but I have as little furniture as possible and concentrate on dressing up the two end tables, chair, and wall while keeping the floor space nice and open.

Light monochromes are nice too so you'll likely just have to work with a neutral decorating sense with the living room.

Not sure if this is your aesthetic or if you wanted more modern, but have you thought about doing something along the lines of 16th/17th century astronomer's studio with say, antique-styled models of the solar system? Thinking like..Galileo's studio or something. Lamps wise, I am very partial to fairy lights with everything which is my own bias (at one point in my life I failed miserably at outlining major constellations in fairy lights on my ceiling) however keeping with bronze/cream/beige tones like in the photo you supplied is probably best. That more traditional/classic lamp shape will also work well. Curtains wise I agree with keeping it plain and lighter in colour.

I really liked the idea of a space theme room, I googled "celestial theme room" and I found a lot of wonderful photos, you should try it too. I think you can make a very classy, elegant space themed room by using wood furniture, constellation prints (for example on curtains or the bed cover) and choosing accessories wisely, I think like a brass plate in the shape of a star or the sun (you know the ones that have a face on it) would look so cool. Sorry for rambling

Anyone have advice on how to really revamp a room on a budget? I can't paint because it's a rental, but the wood panelling throughout my current place is slowly killing me. I'd like to at least make my room cute and comfy.

Depends on the look you're going for. Tapestries are great for an antique / medieval / alchemist style but may not help lighten the room up very much.

You could also try the "making wallpaper from fabric using fabric starch" technique - apparently it works well and doesn't damage the wall, plus is easy to remove when you want to move or change things up. Basic technique here, Google will turn up a lot of other guides: apartmenttherapy.com/how-to-make-removable-fabric-w-74483

Cheapest way to get enough fabric to cover larger walls is to hit up a thrift shop for old sheets.

I have an Ikea Markus in cream, because it was the only white-ish desk chair in my budget that had good reviews. I think it's great, and comfortable to sit in for extended periods of time. The major drawback for me is that I need to draw at my desk, and to sit ergonomically my chair has to slot under my desk, which means leaving the armrests off. So now there's two little holes in the fabric.

For the record, I see people talking about desks in this thread, I also have an Ikea Micke desk with symmetrical drawers, and to sit in a way which allows my arms to rest evenly on the desk I had to remove the drawers. There's way too much bulk there. I still need to take apart my whole desk to remove the plank of wood that was between them, it's very annoying. You probably don't need to worry about ergonomics if you just browse the internet at your desk, but if you work there it might be something to think about.

I would go for jewellery storage rather than makeup just because the options are more aesthetically pleasing. VM is currently making tiny acrylic coffins which might work if you are a lolita and want to get one.
