People used to say that black x white is hard to pull off in the era directly following old school, because back then sites like milanoo had really truly crappy old school inspired pieces, so lolitas thougbt it would be easier to discourage girls from the black x white than try and make them understand. In the recent years not only is it simpler to do black x white since u have a ton of prints, almost everyone knows about Milanoo crap and old school is not looked upon badly. In fact people are re-embracing it and loving it.

I agree with you. it's definitely sloppy and a lot of the pieces are just... cheap looking.

Tie your bows nicer anon, and invest in some higher quality items. A cotton blouse would look better here, especially if you want to keep the bloomers. Maybe a long sleeve blouse as well, or add some wrist cuffs. Also, those tights are the wrong shade of white (or are they lavender??) and make the coord look weird.

Because of this, a lot of cheap ebay stores and awful companies like Milano would copy old school black x white lace looks and cheapen it.

Black and white isn't any harder to pull off than any other look. I really wish it'd make a comeback even. Lolitas getting scared to wear it made beautiful looks like >>9724589 become scarce. The stigma really crippled this look and it has never really came back full swing since then. I'll always hate it because this type of look got me into lolita and shitty advice blogs like the one you're citing ruined a really iconic lolita look.

It's not so much that black & white is hard to pull of, as it is that in the mid 2000's, a lot more maid cosplay-type outfits were marketed as "Lolita", and it let to a lot of newbie lolitas spending $100 on their first "lolita" dress, and getting completely ripped off by companies like Milanoo and shitty eBay seller. A lot of newbie posts on egl were black & white ita coords, and it just kinda caught on that you shouldn't do black & white coords because it made you look like a maid-cosplay ita.

This, plus the fact that bad quality materials show up even more when there's high contrast. You might be able to hide scratchy raschel lace between ruffles of the same colour but when it's overlaid on a highly contrasting fabric, like white on black, the cheapness stands out so much more. It's easier to tell newbies not to buy BxW just to be safe than to instil a sense of quality when they've likely never even seen real brand before.
