Post fursuit/mascot pics, questions, stories and anything else fursuit related.

Frequently asked questions:
>How much is a new suit?
Expect to pay at least 2k for a fullsuit commission, 3k+ for something padded, and higher for a realistic suit. Heads typically go for 400-1k, partials 900-1.5k.
>Where to buy second hand?
https://www.furbuy.com/
https://www.thedealersden.com/
occasionally the 'fursuit' tag on furaffinity.
>What about Japanese suits?
list of makers and other relevant kemono suit info
https://www.furaffinity.net/journal/6993893/
>Fur supplies and diy?
www.matrices.net/tutorials.htm
>Foam?
Amazon, Joann's, etc
High density for heads, med/low for body/padding.
>How to clean?
Handwash, low heat, no dryer! (unless you have a no heat setting)

Thanks very much! I'll try it out, and yes I tried pmx editor and it didn't work for me. And I can't seem to export it from actual Miku Miku Dance itself.
I checked out the model and compared it to my head model in the meanwhile though and it seems like my head base is pretty accurate so I'm very satisfied with that.

Lol anon I wouldn't even have recognized it as pony hadn't it been brought up explicitly. Mods gave furries a pass for this because it's about costumes, the /mlp/ rule is 1) from a different time and 2) pretty clearly about preventing a specific behaviour. Anon is here to talk about costumes, not ponies, the costume in specific just happens to be a pony.
This is like demanding post-op trans people use their bio-sex bathroom; sure, there's a point of technicality in there, but contextually it's just absurd to try and reinforce the rule in question.

Saying you can't post pony related costumes in /cgl/ makes as much sense as banning all /a/ related costumery from here as well. I'm the anon who posted my Thorax fursuit, and man o man is the autism real in these people who think I'm going to get banned for that!

This entire thread is a violation of global rule 3, so having a relevant post that violates global rule 12 isn't going over the line. This thread is allowed because it's relevant to cosplay and an mlp fursuit is also relevant to cosplay.

You wouldn't even be able to recognize it as an mlp character unless you're caught up to the latest season. Sperging out about people posting content from a show you watch is just kind of hilarious on it's own.

Skin care is a health thread, so it belongs on /fit/. Since you didn't argue the other points so I guess we agree there

Fursuiting is cosplaying and so it can be posted on the cosplay board because board rule one says it can.

It's a bit strange how they modeled this, it seems like there are a lot of extraneous polygons. Like, there are plenty of flat surfaces that are subdivided for no real reason. Like where there would normally be one triangle, it's split into four triangles making a single flat triangle. It's weird because that doesn't add to the roundness of the model at all, they still make one triangle, just quadrupling the amount of surfaces for no reason.

This probably doesn't matter to anyone, I just thought it was odd is all.

>I'm super new to buying stuff online
Oh boy. First, make sure you have a debit card or the like, or a paypal account depending on who you're going with. Then find the proxy service, there's a fair number to choose from, all with their own strengths and weaknesses. There's even individuals who're willing to go out and get stuff for you, if you can find them.
Personally I've used Shopping Mall Japan, primarily to get LDs sent over, and hadn't had a single issue with using them to do so. (If you want to look into how they work, I'd advise on going through the old version of their site through the wayback machine. It's 90's-tastic, like a lot of the japanese web, but so much easier to navigate)
After finding what service works best for you, there should be ample information from said proxy service on how to go about ordering things through them. More than likely it's going to have to be a custom order of some sort 'cause buying a specific length of fur from a japanese fabric/hobby shop's going to be a bit different than the usual Yahoo auctions listing or amazon japan order.
Know beforehand though regardless of whom you go with, there's going to be the price of the item itself, the shipping from wherever the fur was to wherever the proxy service is located, then the shipping from the proxy service location to wherever you live (With SMJ, they have a US office that they batch ship stuff between, so that part's almost always slightly cheaper then it might be otherwise.), as well as whatever proxy fees that the service has for doing all of that.
The whole thing's a bit more work than getting something off eBay, but doing so opens up a whole host of otherwise hard to find items, or borderline impossible to get items, if you have enough self control to have the cash on hand to pay for it some time after initially ordering it.

Different anon, but:
>Why do they have huge holes in them?
To save on weight, and filament.
>How do you print something that big?
Print the thing in question in multiple parts and attach them together after the fact.
Is it really expensive?
Strictly for the print, not terribly so (depending on how much filament's used for both the part itself and the supports as necessary.) but printers can run you quite a bit, especially if we want a decent print volume (bigger than ~25cm3, like most printers.) 3D printing's quite the rabbit hole though if you do get a printer, so if the idea of rewriring things and modding the printer with 3D printed parts to make it work better/do different things and/or working with polygons to make the models to print in the first place puts you off, then it might not be for you.

What anon said. I make my own custom 3d bases too because i can model mysef and have a cheap and bigger volume diy printer myself too. For me its more reliable, cheap, easily customizable and you have a virtual preview of what youre gonna get. Its also less hot than a foam baseand not as basic like a resin base, you cannot customize a master mould + you have perfect symmetry.
My zeraora base (attached) was about 350g which equals 10$ in print material. I also used the holes to save material and in some places they serve for ventilation

Sethaa is hardly known by anyone, that would be Tioh as he was the very first person to do 3D printed headbases and made a shitton of guides on it for the fursuit livejournal while offering a lot of his models online for free

Tbh, in the end it is cheaper to 3D print a mold when doing mass-production (Atalon does that for vacuum forming for example).

>> No.9701284

>>9701252
>Tbh, in the end it is cheaper to 3D print a mold when doing mass-production
Yeah I was thinking of doing that myself aswell, but then more for silicone mould purposes (use a 3d printed shell as master mould support rather than fragile plaster or toxic fiberglass). But vacforming makes so much more sense especially for these front facing masks! Thanks for that.

>> No.9701352

>>9701252
Just had a look through the gallery pages of these people, and while Sethaa is the better sculptor of the two, Tioh seems to utilize the head holes way more effectively. Setheaa seems to just throw a handful of holes into the mesh and be done with it, zero finesse in the layout and balance of kept form vs a lighter head/cheaper to print.
I'm not seeing anything in the way for buying headbases from Tioh, so this next point doesn't apply to them, but Setheaa does. While her sculpts are really good, they're all incredibly generic and rather same faced. For the kemono bases that seems to come with the territory for better or worse, but for the others they all look like only the small area of the muzzle was somewhat altered between them (unless she couldn't get away with that, and still only really changed out the muzzle area). You could get the bases edited ever so slightly for 30eur more on top of ~60-80eur, but it's still going to be massively same faced because it's still effectively the same mesh.
Do people really want pre-designed head bases for their characters so (their heads at least) all look exactly the same with only fur length and pallet swap to change things up, especially when we have the ability to make 100% custom, symmetrical, on model headbases?

>> No.9701442

>>9701352
I agree with everything you said completely. I like the fact that you can completely make a new base from scratch without fucking up on prototypes or having to build an entire new mould, so I'm going to take advantage of that, if I ever want to open a fursuitmaking studio (which I do really want to do).
I think it's a very nice market opportunity to provide people with completely custom built base for their suit, exactly how they want their character to look like.

>> No.9701495

There's always failed prints, but that's more akin to having a base clay sculpt have weird air pockets or something rather than doing everything right and just having a bad sculpt to begin with.

Completely symmetrical is uncanny valley though. There has to be minor differences to stop the creepy factor, even if you don't realize it. A perfectly identical mask on both sides just comes across as Chinese bootleg with no personality and effort. I'm not saying have a lop sided mask, but I am saying even professional mascot costumes have that small variation. I mean you're welcome to argue if you wanna get salty but that's my two cents from years of making latex masks for TV, which are really creepy.

>> No.9701571

>>9701549
For anything approaching realistic and closely fits what a human face looks like, especially if it's going to be moving entirely with the muscles under the wearers face (like with a latex mask), yea it can look kinda creepy. But for obviously cartoony and not even remotely human like faces, you can get away with having perfect symmetry. Putting some deliberate irregularities into the headbase to make it less symmetrical can help with going that one step up, but that's extra work for most people who're usually going to have fairly symmetrical characters to make fairly symmetrical suits of in the first place.

?? bruh it makes sense to have irregularities in latex masks but for fur covered cartoony head bases symmetry is what you need. Hell, nobody will notice if the corner of the mouth is a bit lower on one side, but i've seen so many foam head bases that are so horrifying on symmetry. It is important to be in control of what is symmetrical and what needs to be irregular and that's what a digital preview would help you a lot with. Because you're in control where the irregularities go (if you want any at all).

>> No.9702630

>>9702611
>Agrees with the poster in the use case they have reference to
>Doesn't point out how uncanny valley doesn't really apply here because that explicitly deals with how close to human something is, not anthropomorphic.
There's legitimate reasons for having symmetrical heads/characters, means you only need one set of character sprites for both directions instead of two, means you only need to use half the uv space for a character model, and also means you can have better compression of game assets if you only really need half of the data.
Also what >>9702617 said about having it be easier to match sides up and put in realistic asymmetrical aspects if you can have it be symmetrical to begin with.

I'm gonna do a testrun with them outside tomorrow when the sun's back up, but they're quite lightweight. I actually keep my back and shoulders straight up while wearing them, since they are quite top heavy and leaning either forward or backward will cause them to lean too far to one side. >Good point, i'll take a look at that in the usa. In my country I've not ever seen minky in this color, and usually if theres any minky its the weird dotted kind.

It's pretty much the same in the states. Our major craft/fabric stores usually only carry the dotted kind or really low quality versions of their own stuff. Fabric.com is your best bet.

Atm does have a wire in the middle, i might add a sleeve of proper fabric over the felt later when I find matching fabric. I don't think I want to do plastic, the texture will be very different from the rest of the suit then.

While we're talking about where to get fur, does anyone have any idea where I could find long-pile muted dark purple fur? I have looked at literally every place that sells faux fur and have come up with nothing that's close, just very bright purples that are too neon. Closest is the alpaca shag in plum but its too curly for what I need, any suggestions? Am I at the point I just need to try and dye it myself?

I'd never seen Mohair Bear mentioned before so I had a look for my hard-to-find colour of choice as well, though it seems like swatches alone are almost $30 for me.

Before I order, does anyone know of any suits that use their soft lime mink? Right now I've got a sample of luxury shag olive from Fabric.com but I'm worried it may be too long.

I ordered with mohair before, and just like you I had the swatch problem, so I straight up ordered everything. I do have to note that some of their pictures are outdated and have poor lighting that does not show the color well (thankfully it worked out for me that way, i counted on it). I checked out your specific listing, and it certainly has the same problem, it has poor lighting, so I added a color correction.
As long as you pay a bit attention to their premium prices you can figure out what is the good quality and worse quality stuff.

>> No.9713093

>>9713085
You've just saved me $30 with that colour correction, it's much too bright for what I need so I'll probably go with the olive I've got in the end. It's less of an olive and more of a very muted light green.

Thanks for sparing my wallet, anon.
