Old Thread >>9094080

This thread is for ouji and aristocrat (aka "boystyle") discussion. Boystyle refers to the masculine counterparts of lolita and aristocrat fashions. There is a lot of overlap between these styles, and different people use different terms to describe them. So, consider this a thread for those whose style is on the right half of Buttcape's Lolita Family Triangle: http://www.kawacura.com/moripress/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/0dmmLH6-350x350.jpg

Hey so I am trying to understand the difference between a busby and a bearskin and am not having much luck with research. From what I can gather so far is that the bearskin is taller and both hats we worn in different contexts (by different people, countries or regimen). Aside from that I can't find anything else out about different defining features and in many cases the names are used interchangeably,

I always thought they were all called busby's until I read your post, now I don't want to call it the wrong thing! Can you help an anon out.

side note to keep it relevant: Does anyone know if they are planning to release this hat? Both my mum and I decided I should get it if they do when we saw pics from the show. I've wanted to coord fur hats with military for ages.

so i started (re)reading it because of this thread and read everything up to the end of the Red Ram arc (everything before Godchild begins). the number of twins, lookalikes, split or multiple personalities, and general cases of mistaken identity is too damn high. for a mangaka with such a distinctive, fashionable art style i feel like the repeated plot twists involving "true" identities makes a weird kind of sense. there is a thesis' worth of material here, i am sure of it.

My understanding is the Busby is shorter, and can even be somewhat cloth and floppy. Though the original Hungarian versions were stiff, tgey were only about as tall as they were wide, and almost always had a feather. As opposed to the bearskins, there are a wide variety of Busby's, a more armies fielded them.

Bearskins of course are tall, never floppy, almost never feathered.

Continuing, the original Hungarian Busby is noticeably different from the bearskins of the British grenadiers and French imperial guard. Notice the cloth and feather/plum, the flat top and how it's only slightly taller than wide. Hussars of most Nations had hats like this, including the famous Death's Head Hussars.

British infantry, especially early light infantry and rifle regiments worry a 'busby' that was floppy and almost entirely or wholly cloth. It's stupid and they should feel bad for calling it that. It did have a feather though.

I went cat-themed ouji. Also learned how to properly tie a tie for the first time.

The entire night I had "Ah, It's a Wonderful cat Life!" in my head, it was a bit unfortunate. I met up with a small group of lolitas by chance at a Halloween party on campus, so that was a lot of fun.

>tfw someone says they want their SO to wear something "more grown up than boystyle"

Fucker it is not literal children's clothes. The word just means male version of whatever is being discussed (usually, lolita). That is it. Lolitas should know better than to assume a Japanese term for something is meant to be taken literally in English. They should also know better than to assume that "cute, sweet" substyles represent the whole spectrum. Not every "boy's style" in pic related is cutesy (though the ouji one is pretty damn cute).

Don't get me started on people who say ouji doesn't have substyles. It's the same fucking clothes, made by the same fucking brands, and mirrors lolita. The only reason substyles for ouji aren't more commonly discussed is because most people treat ouji as a substyle of lolita instead of a companion style.

There are GLB/Kera spreads that differentiate between sweet, gothic, and classic ouji, and Japanese oujis use the word to refer not just to sweet cutesy stuff but for head-to-toe Boz.

>tfw someone calls one classic coord "kodona" and another one "aristocrat" because one has shorts and the other has pants
>tfw someone wears a bunch of bows and OTT gaudy trim but it's black so they call it gothic ouji
>tfw someone wears pastel fairy kei and says they just invented sweet ouji

Do anoy of you think some less otp steampunk stuff could work for certain styles of ouji? a lot of the coats and such especially look like there'd be crossover, like this one as a quick example i just saw. But then I'm, really not the best at this so I thought it would be best to ask. With the right accessories and makeup and the rest of the outfit I think it could work in a lot of cases, especially considering how tiny most japanese made stuff tends to be

The Ouji is Sisen! I love how in old snaps people mix existing gothic and punk items (like the trousers in >>9259246) but the aesthetic is spot on. Of.coirse I am aware back then their range of choices were limited so they had to be creatively. But that is how coordinations should be, not wearing head to toe of what a brand has prepared for you.

just avoid the ita elements, don't overpay (mens gothic clothes in the west is shit for the prices companies charge, imo, compared to brands like Boz or Moitie), and don't give up on indie brands that do custom sizing.

a while page of ouji style guide from volume 8, when gothic was obviously the dominant fashion force.

i am surprised how many ouji guides the early-2000s GLBs had. i am only finding random scanned pages online and yet they are abundant enough to make me sort of annoyed that the western EGL community ignored it for so many years, choosing instead to talk about nonsense like "dandy" and "kodona" based on, in each case, a single misunderstood image.

Is there something better than fan plus friend for entry-level, custom sized jackets in a vaguely EGA style? I know their reputation is hit or miss but I keep coming back to it as the most viable option

>> No.9301768

I did, most of it was just too ouji (understandably)
Idk if ega is popular enough to have a spreadsheet of its own anywhere. I feel that steam punk and historical clothing brands might have items that I'd like but the ones that I've looked at so far all seems to be really questionable in quality

There's ichigo15, and one of the surface spells has some stuff. I'm not really sure how much either of them can do custom sizes though.

>> No.9301963

>>9298908
Sadly EGA isn't as popular as it used to be, so your range of choice isn't as good as it used to be for the main brands, and I'm not very aware of any TaoBao brands that cater for Aristocrat desu. When you say custom entry level stuff, in what way do you need it to be custom sized? Bigger or smaller?

Retroscope has some on clearance that could work. Stay away from their shiny shirts, but their jackets look decent.

Redballs made great trench coats. They may or may not be taking orders still, I found a couple websites but no way to purchase so you might have to call them. I got pic related from an eBay listing, in great condition and it is a really nice jacket. See what you can find

A lot of Retroscope stuff was produced by Fan + Friend a while back. Not sure if that's still the case.

I'm not stopping you from doing it, I'm just saying it's probably going to look bad. The styles are too different, and cowboys aren't exactly known for there elegance. Someone could conceivably pull it off, but there's a reason it isn't as popular as the other themes. But do whatever floats your boat.
