All well and good saying pass it onto someone else, but that means finding thirty other people willing to volunteer and form a new committee. It's a lot of hard work, and people don't seem to realise that the committee are completely voluntary and have to do all this stuff in their spare time. I don't know exactly why it's finishing up, but I'm assuming the crowd who've had to stay on to keep it running have too much going on in their own lives to keep going back, and there aren't enough new people willing to put in the work to keep it going.

Pretty much. Ultimately though, it needs someone with a wedge of cash to bankroll it for the first year to get it going.

I'm convinced in order to get a good new con in this country, you're going to have to go all out and plan expecting the first year to be gigantic with huge costs, and ideally huge footfall. Otherwise any smaller event is just going to wither around for 2-3 years and die off as the hype from the first year fades and attendance peters out. So gonna need something like €50-100k and run it in the CCD with an entire 747 full of guests.

But biggest thing, get some fellow people who know what they're fucking doing in running something, and establish you lot as the perennial overlords of the thing. While managers and sub-committee may change over the years, you lot will always be there from year to year, helping to ensure stability and consistency. Essentially doing a Q-Con, but not up t'North.

The problem with this is it'll never survive on volunteers which is why only big profit cons like dcc and mcm will survive. Which people are a bit split about because the big cons tend to lose the fun atmosphere smaller cons have. So you need to find a happy medium where you're paying your committee/staff so they'll actually care about their jobs, or end up with all volunteers again who will eventually stop caring because it's a shit ton of pressure

Need to start from a smaller base, either offering a more botique experience than the big MCM's or just plan and cost for a smaller amount of attendees.

It took years for Eirtakon to break 1000.... the first year was something like 200-300. Same for year 2.5.

Going for the monster event leads to a one-and-done event. If I was running a con I'd start it small, with a budget I know will at least cover costs and leave the con in a place so that even if it's a one and done it doesn't fuck shit up for the next con. But otherwise, grow from there.

The first year isn't going to be spectacular. But unlike FailCon, if you fucking deliver on what you said you'd do for such a low budget and the people who paid in the door had a good time, your con will grow in year 2.

Growing a long running con won't happen by accident. You need to start from day 1, with a view to holding Con 1 in 18-24 months time, with the expectation that only a few people will show up, manage expectations, and keep those few people happy. Happy people mean happy reviews, means more people next year.

The Con needs to be run as a business. Even if it's not commercial, it needs a business plan anyway for growth. Which means it needs to have at least one person on the founding committee who knows something about accountancy and running/planningt a business. I don't - all I know is these thing's need to be done. Like it or noit, it might be our passion project, but the rest of the world sees us as 'just another business' and their big concern about us will be whether they get paid or not when it's done...

Eirtakon took 4 years to afford a foreign guest, IIRC, and that was with DCU bankrolling a chunk of it.

And US Guests are expensive. (Business class man, at least...... on a non-shit airline.)

Do you think we'll see a restoration of Irish cons to the level we had three or four years ago, with three major cons in Dublin alone? Or is it unsustainable? I kinda miss having a semi-local convention I can go to every few months, but I'm also curious to see how the landscape is changing.

Ok did a quick costest of my Ryuko cosplay still needs a little censoring to make sure nothing pops out but it's almost complete.

Brenda Romero's panel on the history of sex in videogames was pretty interesting and informative, except for the bit where the panel room's door was left open and there was some loudmouthed retard right outside the door having a conversation full volume while being completely non self-aware and not noticing the room full of evils being cast in his direction out the door.

Of course whiskey tasting with our man Michael went down a treat as always. I'm hoping I get to see him again in some other capacity.

Cosplay Blind Date was a complete trainwreck. Seems like they couldn't round up enough contestants so we only had 3 women to pick from Ireland's finest autists. There was a cringe singularity forming over at our side of the room the entire time. None of the questions were answered with anything remotely resembling wit. Fair play to the guests (can't remember their names) for trying their best to salvage what they could.

Pub Quiz was just an excuse to get pissed on the Friday night. Had vodka under the table the entire to go with the pints, which were surprisingly reasonably priced for Croker at €6. Some of the categories were utter shite, like having to name Cardcaptor Sakura clow cards. That and the fact that the convention's organisers consider Avatar to be proper anime clearly didn't sit well with anybody in the room.

Mate and I sat in on GeekEire's retardation and had to leave after literally 2 minutes because the room was obnoxiously hot and some of the shite Burke was coming out with went beyond cringe.

I never buy anything from the trade hall but still managed to end up there 5 times over the course of the weekend because of mates wanting to have another look.

sounds like bullshit to me and the opposite sort of thing they need to be attracting at cons. it's just patting shitty nerds/gamers on the back telling nothing about their attitudes is wrong and they never need to change which being a woman in gaming since the late 90s I can emphatically say is not the case. It's not about censorship either, as I'm very much against that, but the overload of "sexy" women in games and the generally poor ratio of male/female heroes.

Brenda Romero didn't do anything like 'call out SJWs', I don't know where that anon is coming from with that description. The panel was just an overview and history of how sex and its portrayal have evolved over videogames' relatively short timespan as an entertainment medium. She even said towards the end that she doesn't really approve of Japanese rape simulators. Ended with saying that videogames should be afforded the same kind of classification status as books because there's nothing to stop a 12 year old walking into a bookshop and picking up a copy of 50 Shades of Grey.
