The cosplayer I think the response got to be a little too much, but she really should have known better. If she had painted her skin a deep red like in the show it would have been fine (tumblr probably still would have been all over her) but no, she had to go for full on blackface. Like an idiot.

I am normally all for the body positivity train, but damn is Smoky Quartz ugly.
It very much feels like mash of random elements from two different designs, there's no coherency to it at all. The colors feel muddy, muted, and uninteresting. There's none of the POP or instant recognition I've come to expect from SU character designs.

I'm really hoping that this is a temporary design because Steven & Amethyst don't quite get it yet (like how the first Garnet fusion was a bit all over the place), and that next time we see Smoky her design will be less awful.

I personally think that Smoky Quartz was designed quite well being that she's a fusion. The color of her gem makes sense because it's a mixture purple and pink. To be fair, smokey quartz is much browner, but they went with a safer murky purple and people are still upset with it.

I mean, all of the fusions were designed with the individual gems in mind and bought them together very well. Steven and Amethyst are both chubby, so it makes sense that Smokey Quartz is as well. They fuse body types in all of the others, too, like how opal and rainbow quartz make an hourglass-like figure and sugilite is a bit of a heavy set tank.

And well, their clothing is also just a flat out fusion of what they were wearing. Just as with Stevonnie, the shirt and shorts are smaller as their fusion is much bigger than either of them.

Their weapon is probably the coolest part, though. Didn't dig it as first, but its pretty neat. Even fused them down to the personality, constantly pelting the audience with jokes.

I mean, I get why people think it's ugly, but I don't think the design is perfect the way that it is

I was gonna get a zentai but i realized the zipper in the back would be weird for me to put a gem on (also zentais have a gross shine to them i dont like)

thinking of either getting arm socks/leggings and painting my back then putting the gem on, but then somebody said the seems would be difficult to hide/attach (?)

OR would it be easier to just paint my whole body? Ive never painted my entire arms/legs arms before (only painted my face/used zentais/armsocks) I'm afraid even after sealing it that I'll get it on somebody else's cosplay or furniture

honeslty, the best way i see it working is to paint your whole body and just stay away from people/warn them that there might be paint coming off you and that's because there is a lot of bare skin on her and the seams/edges are going to be hard to hide.

an alternative would be making yourself a sort of long sleeved top that goes under her main top. you can make it out of stretch fabric and simply slide it over your head so you don't need a zipper of any kind. the neck line can be hidden under the straps that go over her shoulders and then you'd only have to paint your face, neck and some top parts of your chest depending on how low you choose to make the top's cut.

Seconding the person who suggested just making an undershirt. You do not want to use that much paint on yourself, visible seams be damned. My friend made one out of tights from welovecolors and then made the skirt and top separately so she only needs to paint her face and neck.

So much good...and bad- This has always made me extremely nervous to try SU cosplay. I have decided to create a pilot episode garnet cosplay. It will be the third cosplay I have ever made rather than bought.
I'm pretty experienced with a sewing machine...It's just the Damn Gauntlets I really don't want to just leave them out!! I have never worked with worbla or foam and I'm just not really sure where to go with it, any suggestions?

I decided to go with Pilot episode because it's very close to my body type, and with a little chest padding I should be fine. I also am a white girl and I don't think an afro wig would suit me, and I am not ready to tackle a big square wig.

I am honestly asking what is wrong with this. This isn't me. I'm not even the one who posted it. To this date it IS the most clean YD. The last one we saw posted had the chick who does all those makeup tests and her helmet didn't even fit properly. The edges were cracked and the makeup wasn't that well applied. However, it got tons of likes and reblogs. The helmet on this cosplayer is actually shaped well, the makeup is applied well, and you don't see her hair edges which a lot of people with helmet and oddly shaped wigs in this fandom seem to have a hard time with.

So again, I am asking, what is wrong with it that you don't like? Compared to other YD, it is good if not the best right now. I wish the photoshoot was with a better photographer. Thats so sure.

That aside, you can also clearly see the newspaper for the paper mache in your sword. Paint needs work. Cosplay is simple, but the edges of the top look unhemmed and messy. Hairstyle is wrong, get a wig. Your makeup makes you look way too old.

Honestly this is the only one I've seen where it's incredibly obvious that it's a cutout and not just a yellow star stuck on top. Like...for the longest time I didn't realize that the star was supposed to be a cutout because almost every cosplayer makes it look like an add on.

I think someone needs to make a solid panel front out of a thicker plastic that has been fitted to the curves of the body. Cut the star shape out of that, cover it in the fabric used for the rest of the dress.

That's the only way I can think of getting a clean looking star.

I threw a quick Google search for how to hide dreadlocks under a wig cap, and there's tons of results. There's actually quite a lot of male characters in Steven Universe - most of the humans are male, and some of the bigger gems tend to be cosplayed better by people with bigger frames.

That's not why Zuke left twitter. She left because she doesn't have a good filter between herself and the fans, and she was getting overwhelmed by the constant barrage of SU questions and demands on all her social media (which she kept open to fans) to the point where it's all people would post to her accounts and even her game streams. The tweets leading up to her leaving were not about harassment, but about her making a passive aggressive tweet about the leaks, which people didn't take too well. She shut down and her last tweets are indicative she was overwhelmed with the heavy level of interaction the fandom came to expect from her.

It's not to say that the backlash about her shipping didn't have anything to do with it, but people are framing it as "omg they bullied Lauren Zuke so hard she left Twitter" when that's not what happened. She'd been getting overwhelmed by the SU fandom's sheer volume for weeks.

I attended a convention last weekend! I had to improvise with my Lapis Lazuli Cosplay, so I simply put on a Japanese school uniform that I'd imagine her wearing. I wanted to put more effort into my cosplay, but that's the best I could do at the time.

For the future, I recommend buying a matching blue lipstick and lining your waterline with black eyeliner (or another complementary colour). Your coverage looks decent from the pictures, but you've got the pink-human-lips-and-waterline problem that plagued cosplayers in the Homestuck fandom.

I'd be interested in seeing more of that Pearl you're with. I like the small details on her shorts and top, and the wig seems to be well-styled. Do you know if she has a blog/account somewhere?
