Just because a few of these have prints you could use for a Gothic coord (Holy Lantern, Gloria, Puppet Circus, Horror Garden), does not make them gothic.
Sweet is a spectrum, and I'd say all of the ones you pointed out are on that spectrum. In fact, all of the coordinates pointed out between you and >>9014050 are all sweet.
If you ever doubt if it's sweet, look carefully at the makeup choices, shoes, bag and accessories.

I'm always shocked by how AP is considered constantly sweet to some people and cannot be anything else. They do classic and gothic occasionally, it's just in an AP style, which tends to be cuter or girlish. Something that's cuter looking in a cut or something doesn't automatically make it sweet.

nah my own chain starts with >>9011471 if you want to see my own perspective. genre bending is great, but i have talked goth vs sweet and goth vs classic to death in the past, and am curious now about sweet vs classic. it is the one "main 3" distinction i have not hammered out for myself.

to try to sort my thoughts on the matter out...

one of my assumptions about sweet is that it has a higher level of overall kawaiiness and/or cartoonishness, which is one reason babydoll (or doll-like) dresses with cute, perky shapes read sweet to me no matter what the color or motif is (e.g. happy smiling anime ghosts appear in goth-ish but firmly sweet prints). classic's prints and general styling is more like an illustration than a cartoon, and even when OTT manages to look more "introverted" than sweet, if that makes sense. many (NOT all) of IW prints fall into this illustration side, while there is a decidedly cartoonish bent to the AP prints i am familiar with.

if i were to associate emotions with the three substyles (regardless of the attitude of the wearer), joy or friendliness comes to mind for sweet, while patience or nostalgia comes to mind for classic (and melancholy or passion comes to mind for gothic).

thus coords like >>9022973, with the vintage/scrapbook-looking print and plain styling, tend to read as classic to me. but i don't have strong convictions about it, that's just an impression.

Up until two years ago crosses were an exclusive gothic thing. AP didn't use them much, Moitie used them everywhere.

Then suddenly, bam. Cherry Marguerite with floral crosses. Milky Cross with dead cats and crosses, in pink and lavender. Dolly Cross, which appears to be a sweet take on Moitie's Lace Cross jsk. Tacky Las Vegas cross-shaped bags with equally tacky handles of giant beads. Holy Theatre with dead animals with crosses. Cecilia Cross with crosses, Mother Mary, and I guess Jesus the magic unicorn. Shadow Dream Carnival with ponies on sticks and crosses. Plus last week's Holy Lacy Doll featuring fabric made of crosses.

The motifs don't make the style. This isn't gurokawa menhera, the substyles aren't centred around themes. You can't just "claim" coffin and bats for gothic lolitaland and then declare them off limits to every other substyle.

I'm only responding to the idea that Horror Garden *must* be gothic because coffins and bats. Here is another cutesy print with bats and coffins.

There's nothing extreme about it. These are existing prints, I didn't make these up. As for AP, they seem to make it their personal goal to come up with a cuter version of every popular motif out there, whether it's crosses, coffins, bats, chandeliers, books, forests, chocolates, transparent dresses, etc. They would have gotten around to sweet coffins and bats sooner or later.

The horror garden coord follows the basic rules for a good sweet coord, especially with how she has layered the pieces.
While the natural look for hair and makeup is not unusual in gothic, girls tend to parry that by going for more definitely EGL specific items (The chunky heels, very romantic blouses, hair accessories that scream gothic).
This girl has chosen items that would not be found in one of those coords. Tea parties, a neutral cardigan, a neutral hair accessory. If you swapped the coffin print for pretty much anything else, you wouldn't be fighting so hard to prove it isn't sweet.

It is sweet, apparently just not the kind you like.
