Everyone was so annoying, it put me off joining or creating any anime club ever after that. I also was responsible for creating two lifelong weaboos after introducing the club to hetalia. One of them tried to steal my husbando, the other is almost 20 and is still obsessed with hetalia (among other things, but so very into hetalia)

It's actually adopted from Fraternities. They often have a (small) paddle with their letters engraved on one side, and their slogan/crest/whatever on the other. They used to be used for discipline, then were used in initiation and blahblahblah, but is now mostly symbolic. Some will have oar-sized ones as decoration on their walls in their chapter house. The small ones are given as gifts to graduating members, as well.

That's why the YAOI ones were always engraved with all caps letters early on, to mimic the Greek letters used in Fraternity names. As people forgot it was tied to the old Frat tradition, that changed.

I know back in middle school and early highschool I had no concept of my body and hygiene to go with it, I showered and washed my hair maybe twice a week. I picked clothes off the floor and rewore them, didn't change underwear every day, didn't pluck my eyebrows or shave my legs.
I'd get stupid obsessed with one thing that I'd binge read/watch until the very end and ignore everything else.
I used to color my hair with markers and sharpie paint my nails and use cheap colored eyeshadow mixed with my chapstick to make crazy lipstick colors.

They'll think well if gym class isn't helping then why bother trying and instead the only option is to just not eat if they're that concerned about their weight. Instead, take your kid outside on family walks or get a Wii and some of those Wii Fit games that will get them up and moving if they're really into gaming. Make it into a family game night or something or do a reward system that if she comes home after school and clocks in a certain amount of time on the Wii Fit or (if she'll wear a fitness tracker) certain amount of steps on the fitness tracker, you'll all do something special or she'll get a toy from the dollar store, whatever appeals to her.

Kids at that age are going to make stuff up, they're going to lie, they're going to be unhygienic, but you can make compromises with them to save yourself a headache and give them some independence. You can't pick out their clothes without a fight but you can set out 3-4 outfits and let them choose which one to wear. You can make showering more enjoyable by letting them pick out their own shampoo/body wash. You can even help them be more unique by offering to do their hair in braid designs or use cute hairbows and bands (pic related). It gives them something to show off and get attention with without resorting to stuff that really shouldn't be put in hair.

this shit triggers me because i knew someone who did this kind of thing and she turned out to have NPD as an adult. she was younger than me but i was afraid of her because she never developed empathy for others and would lie or mimic emotional things she saw on TV with utterly dead eyes to try to manipulate people, but she was clueless about how emotions in others work so it tended to just feel weird and inappropriate.

she would terrorize her brothers by acting like a wild animal, roaring and yowling and hissing at them, chasing them around the house on all fours, and then just meow stupidly and stare blankly when confronted about how she was scaring them. i babysat her and could not leave her in a room alone with them: they could mostly get along without her, but once she prowled over to them all hell would break loose.

i can't even explain the eerieness and sense of unreality that being around her brought. there was something just off that creeped me out. she still shows up in my nightmares and i don't understand why. maybe because i never met a child so cold and detached from reality.

I know a lot of the stupid shit I did as a tween/young teen was a compromise because my parents wouldn't let me do what I actually wanted. (Mainly arts and crafts orientated, I would ruin clothes and shit because I didn't have any real art supplies) She's probably wearing stupid shit in her hair because she doesn't have access to what she actually wanted to put in her hair. Not saying you should indulge every single one of her stupid desires, because kids want everything, but it's not unreasonable to supply a kid with some things to express themselves.

A lot of the rest sounds like problems with understanding how her actions affect other people, which is basically empathy. You can't teach a kid empathy by telling them "that's wrong!" Or correcting them. Behaving the right way comes from thinking the right way in the first place.

It's probably why her humour is shit too, she's thinking "What would make *ME* laugh?" Instead of "What would make other people laugh?"

Giving a child some healthy independance is a great boost them instead of saying "No!" every time they want to do something. They'll just end up doing it anyway but in a more destructive way. Tell them "No, you can't have any coloring books" will just lead to the kid finding something they CAN color on.. like the wall. Not saying you have to immediately run out and buy your kid some coloring books right then and there but it wouldn't hurt to toss them a few sheets of printer paper and let them indulge for a half hour so you can have some down time.


And yeah, empathy isn't something kids just instinctively know and punishing them for something they do/say with no explanation for WHY it's upset you is just a big no.
If your child says something hurtful to another child, how are they going to understand what they've done wrong if you go straight to punishing them for it or just saying "That was bad! Don't say that again!"
You have to explain to your child, "Do you know why this is upsetting?" of course they'll answer no and that's when you tell them "Well it's upsetting because what if the other child had said that to you?" and explain a scenario that applies to them.

I... I don't know what is all this about it being normal for children to not bathe and be gross. I remember being a kid growing up in Mexico of all places from ages 0-11 and being perfectly normal with a reasonable standard for cleanliness along with everyone from my classes. Considering Anon's child has ADHD, focusing on bathing themselves is something they probably don't enjoy because they could be doing so many other things and to them, bathing is just a hassle. I am still rooming with her at an upcoming convention and having to spend most of the con around her but I have another friend coming from out of town to visit for the con and we've already made plans together so for the first time ever, Coloring-chan and I won't be attached at the hip 24/7 all con weekend. I also booked my own travel so for the first time we won't be traveling together either and made sure I got Greyhound tickets because she hates the bus and her mother won't pay for bus tickets.

Ah well, I'm not going to let it bug me. I have a friend who is terribly naive and sheltered. She was raised Jehovah's Witness, so yeah. When we were in our early 20s and I got her into cosplay, she'd do all this crazy shit in public that made me embarrassed. I'll admit, I get shy in weird situations, but still

She went to the mall dressed up fully in her Inu Yasha costume to try on costume contacts to get the idea of what color would match best to the costume. Any time we'd go out to eat, maybe partially in costume during a con, or when buying fabric she would just talk about cosplay and anime like the normie employee knew all about it. This was like ten years ago, so it was even less mainstream back then.

Thankfully not too much random Japanese phrases thrown around though.

I always had some kind of hope that LGBT groups could also be a place for asexuals simple because people who are kind of misunderstood by society as a whole might have things in common and could support one another about it. But turns out that was woefully wrong. I suppose that can't be helped.

This is what I've been saying for a long time. With places like Tumblr (not all Tumblr but the SJW side of it) being a straight hetero is basically what being les/gay used to be. LGBTAQ+ or whatever they're calling it now in online circles is like the cools kids table that everyone wants to join. Hell, it's that way for any minority group. Why be some boring white straight girl when you can be a hetero-demisexual bi-romantic and get a shiny new bade for your blog to show everyone how special you are? The moment they log off though, no one gives a fuck and they're just another boring hetero white teen girl that's no different than the dozens other hetero white teen girls in their school.

I can bet you that at least 50% of the special snowflakes on tumblr and other online sites are just impressionable teens looking to find a place to fit in and be cool because their real lives are so damn boring and they're not able to fit in with the 'cool' kids at their schools.

One of my main beefs with tumblr is the whole cult of personality thing. I've noticed it a lot with the rise of shaming cosplayers. A lot of blogs will actively hunt for things to get offensive over, redefine words to make it even more offensive, and then set it on their followers. Due to raising this "new issue" the person gains more followers, more power, and people are more likely to listen to them as some sort of social justice guru. Once they gain enough, they can set the rules and make up their own crazy "you can only be x if you're y" sort of shit and sic their loyal followers on people to harass them for any minor reason. It's these sorts of people which really ruin things for everyone and put people in danger with over-the-top bullying and receipt-taking.

Considering how Yahoo is flailing right now though, I can only wish tumblr dies a quick death.
