I'm doing research for a panel and your replies are appreciated!

Poll here: http://strawpoll.me/5082356

A "main piece" is defined as an OP, JSK, skirt, or other item that you build your coords around.

A few more questions if you don't mind answering them:

>1. How many main pieces do you have?
>2. How many of those would you say are versatile enough to coord in different looks (a dress that can be sweet or classic, OTT or not, etc.)?
>How often do you wear each piece, on average?
>How long have you been collecting?
>What do you wish you had known about wardrobe-building when you started?

Also room/organizing general since we haven't had one of those in a while! Post images or tips for keeping your brand (and offbrand, and handmade) items neat, dust-free, and out of sunlight. If you have a pic of your own wardrobe to share and want to give permission for its use in a panel, feel free to post it here.

Thanks!

You can tell I'm biased toward sweet...

>> No.8521583

>1. How many main pieces do you have?
Copypasting from my answer in lolita general:

Don't have my spreadsheet, so can't do a precise breakdown right now, but around 90 main pieces. Mostly JSKs and OPs, a few skirts.

>2.
Most of what I have is classic or gothic, and can be worn pretty easily between the two styles. I have a few sweet and sweet friendly pieces, but those are part of the cull I'm working on.

>3.
I used to wear lolita almost daily, but shit in my life got real about a year ago, so I've only worn lolita maybe four times in the past six months. When I was dressing up regularly, I wore each piece in my closet between 1 and 12 times a year. More casual pieces got regular wear, while fancy sets were reserved for big meets or convention coords.

>4.
Nearly a decade now. I started buying what I thought was lolita in late 2004, but didn't start buying "real" lolita until early 2007 when I discovered shopping services and Japanese auction sites.

>5.
Don't go for quantity over quality. Find staple items that you can use in multiple outfits. This means paying attention to collars and cuts and how they interact with your dresses. I had three cheap, store-bought blouses when I first started out, to go with each of three different JSKs, due to sleeve types and collars. I could have found a single, more versatile brand blouse that would have worked better instead (and now, with indie and taobao stuff on the rise, that's even easier to find).

Also, pick a style to start, or have a full outfit in mind. I didn't know whether I wanted to do sweet or gothic at the beginning, and just bought pieces that did not go well together. It took months to get a cohesive outfit together because I kept buying things that I liked, that went with nothing else I had.

>1. How many main pieces do you have?
50
>2. How many of those would you say are versatile enough to coord in different looks (a dress that can be sweet or classic, OTT or not, etc.)?
IDK like half?
>How often do you wear each piece, on average?
It varies greatly. Some I wear just a couple times a year, some I wear every couple of weeks.
>How long have you been collecting?
On and off for 8 years. I just recently returned nd started a new wardrobe.
>What do you wish you had known about wardrobe-building when you started?
Prioritize your dream dresses. I already knew that, but I think it's the most important thing to know starting out.

>> No.8521602

>1. How many main pieces do you have?
25, including otome stuff

>2. How many of those would you say are versatile enough to coord in different looks (a dress that can be sweet or classic, OTT or not, etc.)?
A couple of my ETC pieces can be lolita or otome, and the rest of my wardrobe is IW and AP, so a lot of pieces can go both sweet or classic. I also wear certain jsks and skirts casually (no petticoat).

>How often do you wear each piece, on average?
I wear lolita about once a week, so most pieces 1-3 times a year. My pieces that can easily be dressed down get worn more often.

>How long have you been collecting?
I bought my first skirt and socks at Closet Child in 2006. I only had the income to be more serious about purchasing in the past 3 years or so, though.

>What do you wish you had known about wardrobe-building when you started?
Make a wishlist and stick with buying those (except new releases that seriously draw you). Avoid impulse buys and buying because something's cheap, you'll usually end up selling them in the end.

I did your poll!

1) I have 7 main pieces, 2 skirts, 5 JSKs

2) 4 out of 7 of my main pieces are versatile. Two are non print pieces, one is a simple all over print piece, and one is a print that can work for both sweet or classic.

3) Currently I don't wear Lolita very often, so on average I'd say I wear each piece once a year. More accurately, skirts three times a year and JSK's once a year.

4) I've been collecting my wardrobe for sometime around 4 years

5) When I first discovered Lolita, prints and over the top sweet were still just gaining popularity, and older style sweet and sweet with a classic feeling was what many people wore and what I feel in love with. By the time I started buying OTT sweet had been all the rage and wouldn't die off for another few years, and I ended up getting items that are too sweet for me.

I wish I would have only bought secondary pieces and accessories in black or white instead of accent colors. Accent colors are really cute when done well, but they can only be used with one or two items depending on what other colors are in your main pieces, and I found that I prefer a more casual and simple look and now I'm lacking in basic black and white things. I wish I would have gotten black and white shoes instead of those colorful ones because as cute as they are I never get to wear them, and now I'm in need of new basics and it feels like having to start all over with my wardrobe.

A tip I'd give someone is not to buy a piece just because it's cheap, and not to feel like a bigger wardrobe is better. Buy the pieces you genuinely like and don't feel bad if you have a small wardrobe or feel like you need to have a large one. I actually prefer to have a small wardrobe and it's more realistic and practical for my life.

Picture is of Misako's room. She keeps her clothes on a clothes rack and usually has them covered with a cloth to protect them from dust and sunlight.

>1. How many main pieces do you have?
35
>2. How many of those would you say are versatile enough to coord in different looks (a dress that can be sweet or classic, OTT or not, etc.)?
I'd say about 15 could easily be dressed up/down.
>How often do you wear each piece, on average?
Once or twice a year. My lifestyle at the moment isn't conducive to wearing nice clothes, so I'm more of a collector for now. Hopefully in the near future I'll be able to wear lolita more often.
>How long have you been collecting?
A little over 3 years.
>What do you wish you had known about wardrobe-building when you started?
Main pieces do not a well-rounded wardrobe make. Blouses and accessories are just as - if not more - important to giving yourself a lot of options. When I started out I bought main piece after main piece, so right now I feel like my blouse choices are fairly limited.

>> No.8521708

>1. How many main pieces do you have?

9 dresses (5 brand, 2 taobao, 2 bodyline), and two skirts (bodyline)

>2. How many of those would you say are versatile enough to coord in different looks (a dress that can be sweet or classic, OTT or not, etc.)?

4 of the dresses, they are classic dresses that could be made sweet

>How often do you wear each piece, on average?

Not often, as I just began wearing lolita and I would like to expand my wardrobe, both main pieces and supplementary pieces, before I wear them often. Otherwise, I wear lolita about once every two months.

>How long have you been collecting?

Since December 2014, so less than a year.

>What do you wish you had known about wardrobe-building when you started?

I wish I had known that blouses, leg wear, shoes, etc. are also important items to collect, as I am severely lacking in that department now.

>> No.8521728

>1. How many main pieces do you have?
I answered the 20+ option on the poll but my wardrobe is spread out and I'm not 100% sure. I counted vests/coats as main pieces also because I mainly wear ouji and those are what I style my outfits around.
>2. How many of those would you say are versatile enough to coord in different looks (a dress that can be sweet or classic, OTT or not, etc.)?
Less than half. Pretty much all of my pieces fall squarely within one substyle or another; most of it is classic but every so often a sweet piece will really grab my attention so I have 4 of those (3 AP, one ETC)
>How often do you wear each piece, on average?
The most I've worn something is 5-6 times, many of my pieces I haven't even gotten to wear yet but most average 1-2. I don't go to enough meets and I feel like it's weird to wear lolita/ouji one day to school or whatever and then be back to casual fashion the next. I want to wear it more but I'm just really nervous about it.
>How long have you been collecting?
3 years
>What do you wish you had known about wardrobe-building when you started?
Lolita-appropriate shoes and a bag go a really long way toward making an outfit look cohesive; along with a main piece those should be the first things you get. Also, ouji is way fucking cheaper and easier to thrift than lolita.
Hoard socks and just buy them new from brands when you can afford to; people love to mark up their nasty used socks ridiculously and it isn't worth it to buy them on Japanese auction sites with all the fees.

>1. How many main pieces do you have?
12

>2. How many of those would you say are versatile enough to coord in different looks (a dress that can be sweet or classic, OTT or not, etc.)?
I would say that 5 out of 12 are versatile enough to cross styles and even wear them more casually

>How often do you wear each piece, on average?
I wear lolita about once or twice a month, so maybe I wear one piece like once in a year

>How long have you been collecting?
I bought my first skirt on July 2013

>What do you wish you had known about wardrobe-building when you started?
Non-printed pieces are more versatile than printed ones, also shoes and bags are important to make a well rounded coord

>How many main pieces do you have?
40, counting ouji sets.

>How many of those would you say are versatile enough to coord in different looks (a dress that can be sweet or classic, OTT or not, etc.)?
Over half can be styled multiple ways, mostly Gothic/Classic.

>How often do you wear each piece, on average?
2-3 times per year each--I wear Lolita 3-5 times a month, and I cycle my wardrobe so I don't wear the same thing too close together.

>How long have you been collecting?
About four years. I've been wearing Lolita for eight, but I did a complete style change a couple years ago and basically started over.

>What do you wish you had known about wardrobe-building when you started?
How much having a variety of blouses and accessories can help you switch up your look! I would have put more in to those at the beginning. These days my main piece buying is very light as I try to fill out more accessory pieces.

>1. How many main pieces do you have?

I'd say about 7 or 8 of them, at a push.
>How often do you wear each piece, on average?
Every two months at least, I guess. About three quarters of my wardrobe is stuff I can wear most days I'm not doing something that calls for normie wear, and the other quarter is really fancy stuff.
>How long have you been collecting?
Properly? About five years.
>What do you wish you had known about wardrobe-building when you started?
That it's much, much easier to pick a theme or colour scheme and run with it when starting out. My first purchases were all unmatched and it took me a long time to get a basic, 3-main-piece wardrobe that I could mix and match.

>1. How many main pieces do you have?

I collect non-print, and only a few are OTT or geared towards a specific style. So I'd say 95% of my wardrobe is very versatile.

>How often do you wear each piece, on average?
I'm a pretty daily lolita, but some pieces are more wearable than others, so maybe once every month or two. Although I'm sure there must be pieces I haven't worn for like half a year or something.

I feel OP's lack diversity in general, so I would say everything but most of my OP's. Taking that into account the count would come to ~35-40.
>How often do you wear each piece, on average?
Sadly, only about 1-2 times a year, because I can only wear lolita on weekends these days. I would really love to move into a job in my field where I can wear more toned down items day to day.

I try to keep ym wardrobe that I can get 3-5 looks out fo each piece but many of those are quite similar e.g. I can get a plain classic look, a sweet classic look, and OTT classic and an otome-ish casual look. So I'd probably say everything can be coorded 2 very different ways to be a bit more conservative.
>How often do you wear each piece, on average?
Not very, I have a couple of skirts, one OP and one JSK that I tend to favour but I don't tend to wear lolita that much at all, maybe once a month on average.
>How long have you been collecting?
Almost three years.
>What do you wish you had known about wardrobe-building when you started?
Take it slow, even if you can take it fast. I bought so many things that I never wore or wore only once because I rushed. I'd say one of the best things to do is buy a complete outfit, wear it and see how it makes you feels. Then change the bits you don't like, and buy a second outfit, preferably with bits that you can mix and match with the first one, and go from there.

25; 10 OPs, 12 JSKs, and 3 skirts

>2. How many of those would you say are versatile enough to coord in different looks (a dress that can be sweet or classic, OTT or not, etc.)?
Probably about 5. I have a lot of things that are versatile to coord and wear in their own genre, but crossing over is tough in a style that is pretty much conformed to one style and color scheme. Non-prints are my game, though, and those can be worn many different ways, though not always in different styles.

>How often do you wear each piece, on average?
God, I've worn each piece at least twice, but it's a rare occurrence. I say each piece gets worn once a year, or 2-4 times if I really love it.

>How long have you been collecting?
I started in 2006, but it was all shit and I sold all of it off; started really collecting in 2008, left for a couple of years, and then came back full-force in 2014.

>What do you wish you had known about wardrobe-building when you started?
Some things just don't work. I'm not chameleon in appearance and not all styles look good on me at all. Some should just be admired from a distance; same with certain colors and cuts. I had to try everything to know what worked and what wouldn't, and I wasted a good amount of money in that. I wish I would have known from the get-go.

Most of my dresses outside my super OTT sweet ones are pretty versatile. I especially like dresses I can wear as dressy-casual (non-lolita) and make OTT depending on how it's coordinated.

Somewhat OT but related to wardrobe building-

How wise would it be to buy a brand main piece, and a handful of blouses/accessories/shoes/etc from Taobao? They would be the higher quality items from there because I don't want to look like complete trash, but does it really cheapen a wardrobe to have staple items like that that aren't even "brand"? I want to look nice, initially, and I think I can at the very least avoid looking ita except for my face.

>2. How many of those would you say are versatile enough to coord in different looks (a dress that can be sweet or classic, OTT or not, etc.)?
Not many, maybe about 7 all together? I have a good blend of gothic, classic, sweet, and old school, and while I can coord each piece differently, there are only a few that can trancend styles such as sweet to classic. My coords are always a blend of styles anyways such as sweet-classic or old school-gothic or old school-sweet.
>How often do you wear each piece, on average?
Most of them get worn once a month. Not now though. It's so damn hot durning the summer I only get about half way through my closet a month.
>How long have you been collecting?
I started sewing back in 2005, but didnt buy any brand or "real lolita" until 2010.
>What do you wish you had known about wardrobe-building when you started?
I got really excited when I realized lolita wasn't super expensive and I bought everything cute and cheap i could find without putting thoughts toward what kind of look i wanted, or without any coords in mind. This resulted in a crazy miss-matched wardrobe. Super un-cohesive, and I couldnt put together a decent outfit to save my life. I also skimped on real blouses because at the time they were harder to come by in my size, and 99% of the ones that would fit my tits were peter pan blouses, and I don't like them, or overpriced imo, so I just used cheap ugly normalfag tops because I hadn't gained an eye for nice tops at the time. I was too impatient in building my wardrobe, and ive wasted a lot of money and missed out on a few dream pieces of mine because of it. If I could go back now and re do it with the knowlegde I have now, I would.

Personally I haven't seen taobao that came even close to brand, but obviously buying brand blouses is quite expensive.
Putting the brand label aside I do think it cheapens your wardrobe and in turn your outfits if you just care about the main piece and fill the rest with lame designs and questionable quality. If the taobao items are on par with the main pieces, there's obviously nothing wrong with it.

I think about a quarter of them can switch between elegant and casual, most of them can only be coorded a certain way. That doesn't mean I can't coord them differently as the seasons change or with different colors or themes.
>How often do you wear each piece, on average?
I estimate I'll wear a piece 4-8 times a year, depending on how wearable it is. My wardrobe's small, but I'm selling my bodyline right now and getting burando instead, so I don't think it'll be getting much bigger.

About 2/3 of my wardrobe is decently versatile, I have a large salopette and casual skirt collection which might tip it more on the casual side.

>How often do you wear each piece, on average?
For the most part I try to wear each piece at least once to three times a year. Everything is fair game for daily wear except my more OTT pieces, which are reserved for cons or special events.

Interested since 2005 or so, started collecting in 2006.

All but the skirt are very versatile; the skirt is hard to make anything but casual or simple sweet. Most of what I own is AP prints from the 2008-2012 era so they're easy to take from plain to OTT with accessories.
>How often do you wear each piece, on average?
Once every month or two. I'd like to wear Lolita daily as I build up my wardrobe.
>How long have you been collecting?
I started originally in 2007 but never actually got more than one dress until 2014. The past year has been me really building my wardrobe.

First is more of a personal note to my past self: wear what makes you happy but also know what makes you look best (I have really sharp features and look okay in sweet but gothic makes me look best).
Accessories matter. You can pick up secondhand brand or new Chocomint for under $14 easily. Cheap kid's accessories usually look like cheap kid's accessories. Don't waste your money.
Lolita bags and shoes are important. In gothic or classic you can get away with some normalfag brands but sweet isn't so easy. Just buy Lolita shoes.
Those no-show liner socks are damned magical for keeping nice socks or tights in good condition.

Don't get a bunch of mismatched crap and once you have one thing, only buy items that will go with it until you have a full coord. Then buy another main piece that will go with those items - and after that expand by getting items that match the first two and adding on main pieces that go with those as well. Having clothing that doesn't match is annoying as hell.

Also I am coming up on 10 pairs of shoes and it seems ridiculous, I need to swap some of them out for more mature or clunky pairs seeing as I mostly wear classic and old school styled sweet.

>4. How long have you been collecting?
Since January 2014
>5. What do you wish you had known about wardrobe-building when you started?
Only buy things you really want, not just cheap pieces. I've sold about 60% of my closet from my first year

Sorry anon, but I'm selling a lot of my pieces. But on the plus side I think culling will create a nicer collection.

for those of you with huge (50+) collections, how do you store them?

Late reply but, I think I will try to get the best quality blouses and shoes I can that still come from taobao. I might also pick up a jsk from there just because they have some cute, more eccentric items that are still decent quality.

bump because inquiring minds need to know.

even physical lolita shops often do not have over 50 dresses

>> No.8533433

>1. How many main pieces do you have?
3 OPs, 20 JSKs and 1 skirt. I'm trying really hard to keep my collection under 30 items as at one point it really exploded with things I just didn't wear, so I did a lot of curating. My shoe and handbag collection, on the other hand...

>2. How many of those would you say are versatile enough to coord in different looks (a dress that can be sweet or classic, OTT or not, etc.)?
My wardrobe is based around plain-coloured gothic with the odd hint of classic and sweet (print and non-print), but most of my dresses can be worn in at least 2 different styles and a lot lend themselves to vintage/retro styling as well as lolita.

>3. How often do you wear each piece, on average?
I'm not sure - it really varies depending on my mood, I wear lolita between twice a week to once a fortnight so I suppose each main piece on average gets worn twice a year. I have a couple in the 'sale' pile and one to repair so they aren't being worn currently.

>4. How long have you been collecting?
Since 2010. A lot of the pieces I covet are 2008-09 releases as that was when I first got into lolita.

>5. What do you wish you had known about wardrobe-building when you started?
Like so many other people here - buy things you love, buy things you'll actually wear, and buy outfits rather than main piece after main piece

>1. How many main pieces do you have?
19. I just sold four dresses, actually.
>2. How many of those would you say are versatile enough to coord in different looks (a dress that can be sweet or classic, OTT or not, etc.)?
Maybe 4-5 are suitable for OTT, but the majority of my pieces is more casual. They're mostly sweet prints in dark colors, so I think I could make them work for classic too, if I wanted to.
>How often do you wear each piece, on average?
I wear lolita maybe 1-3 times a month, so 1-2 times a year? I wear my favorite dresses more often though.
>How long have you been collecting?
Two years.
>What do you wish you had known about wardrobe-building when you started?
Don't buy it because it's cheap, or you think you need it, or you sorta want it. Only buy it if it keeps you up at night.

Also, don't just buy dresses. Blouses, legwear and hair accessories are very important.

It is an empire waist.
I like it in the mirror (I love it), my friends and internet has said is alright- that is how it is supposed to look, but I am not convinced by photos. Who put this idea in my head is my SO, who told me it looks too short that the waist sits too high up because I'm too tall. So it looks like I forced in a smaller size- which is a nono in any fashion.

I have another dress that is too big, but it does not show in photos. At least it makes me look bigger.

the sleeves look a little short but wristcuffs could help with that.

i have no opinion on the length.

To me it looks fine in the context of lolita, but I can see how to normalfags it looks like you're wearing your kid sister's dress because the sleeves and dress length are clearly too short, and the empire waist looks like it's trying really hard to cling to the bottom of your boobs rather than sitting on your underbust.

>1. How many main pieces do you have?
5, and I'm getting a sailor OP soon, which is terrible because I haven't gotten a blouse or shoes yet.
>2. How many of those would you say are versatile enough to coord in different looks (a dress that can be sweet or classic, OTT or not, etc.)?
I have a classic-looking dress that can be turned into sweet when matched with my frilly heart-shaped apron. I have a floral dress that can probably be sweet or classic if matched with the appropriate accessories.
>How often do you wear each piece, on average?
Not very often. Once a month if I'm not feeling shy. I'd like to wear them every day, but I'm honestly pretty embarrassed to move around the house with them. I'm building up more confidence very very slowly, though.
>How long have you been collecting?
I got my first dress around three years ago, but I've been interested in the fashion for around 6 years, slowly learning, still learning.
>What do you wish you had known about wardrobe-building when you started?
Most of your beginner purchases are probably not going to make you as happy as your later ones and it shouldn't discourage you from continuing to try. Try to build one solid coord at first instead of buying a bunch of main pieces with nothing to go with them. It's a waste of money and you'll feel bad when you go to a con or meet in just an OP and some shoes and tights you got at Payless.

The dress is short, but not too short. At least not so short you should sell it. You have a good figure for wearing the dress because it does not make you look fat even though it's so high waisted. So don't bother to sell, you look good in it.
