I'm not sure if this is really /cgl/ related, but I know goth lolita is a thing, so I figured it was my best shot.

I'll be going to one for a vampire event next month, and I have no clue what to wear. I only cosplay and I know almost nothing about lolita, much less if goth lolita or something similar would be accepted at a place like that.

If any seagulls have gone to a club/bar where the attire was strictly goth/historical, what did you wear? I hate how the tacky PVC corsets and things look, but I don't want to look too overdressed in a full bustle dress or something. Can anyone give some insight?

Also, if any of you have attended a vampire-specific event, what is the proper etiquette and protocol? I'm totally lost, and I don't want to make a fool out of myself.

>> No.8517774

sorry, even if this is relevant to my interests it is not on topic, unless the "vampire event" explicitly involves costuming or LARPing (i think the sticky covers that?), or you are asking how to work jfash into your outfit/costume/coord.

make an effort to make this on topic in a way that a mod could not object to please

>> No.8517813

if it's a vampire event I'm pretty sure any sort of gothic dress will be welcome since vampires and goth are extremely tied together.

however, I will say that gothic lolita, though inspired by western goth, has very little to do with the goth scene here in the west, so to be honest I'm not sure if this is very on-topic to the board. it's inspired by western goth, but still falls into the lolita and j-fashion community rather than the gothic community.

if you just want to know if it will be weird for you wear gothic lolita to the vampire event, then no, it won't be. there's lots of styles of gothic and gothic inspired fashion and gothic + vampires have close ties so you will be fine if you decide to wear whatever type of gothic fashion, even if it's some sort of costume type thing.

gothiccharmschool (I think that's her username, if not just google that without the spaces) would probably have a better answer for you on terms of what goes on and how to dress. this really isn't the right place for this kind of question

Well, I probably should have phrased it better, but I was wondering if it would be acceptable to wear /cgl/-related clothing like visual kei style stuff to something like this. I did mention goth lolita, and I am legitimately interested in the possibility of wearing something that would fall under that category, since I like that style and prefer it to the heavy corsets and tacky satin skirts I've seen as examples of traditional goth clubwear. I costume like a cosplayer and think like a cosplayer, but right now I need the EGL side of /cgl/ since I don't think it would be appropriate for me to show up dressed as Yui.

Thanks, anon. I'm looking at her page right now and it seems really helpful.

I'll delete this thread if anyone else objects or thinks it's too off-topic. I don't want to cause any problems just because I'm selfishly new to all of this. The more I look at goth lolita though, the more I think I'd really like to wear something like that, so if anyone has any pics of vampire-inspired coords, that might make this thread more on-topic and help me out a lot.

my first question to anyone wanting to get into lolita or dress up for an event is always this: how much cash are you prepared to drop on all this?

lolita is an expensive hobby if you haven't already figured it out, 1 outfit can run someone anywhere from $100 to $1000.

obviously if this is your first time you don't need to spend a thousand dollars but you better be prepared to spend at least $150-$250 on a coordinate. (and that amount could be what you spend on one dress alone, not even counting accessories, blouses, shoes, etc)

we can help you put something together, but understand you may need to be a bit flexible (in terms of finding what you can get for a dress) if the event is in one month.

what's your budget? what kind of dress are you interested in? something plain or with a print? do you want to go more elegant and OTT? are you plus size, busty, or otherwise would need something custom-made?

>> No.8517877

The thing about goths is they're generally pretty chill people. They're not going to crucify you for wearing the 'wrong' thing. They would probably appreciate you doing your own thing more than trying to fit some dress code. Just keep it real, be yourself and don't try too hard to fit in.

>> No.8517880

>>8517766
I've worn gothic lolita to many goth clubs and usually it either fits right in, or it gets complimented. If you don't like tacky PVC shit don't wear any. Just put in an effort to look relatively gothic--wear black, do your makeup, etc.

yeah, western goth will love japanese style goth. go crazy and express yourself.

if you need to figure out how to buy, check the lolita general or sticky. i think a maturer style of vkei or gothic lolita could work. whatever fits your personality; goth in the west is more about self-expression than coordination. (looking good helps obviously, but the focus is just different)

>how much cash are you prepared to drop on all this?
I was planning on spending ~$300. I don't mind spending maybe $100 more, but I don't think I could go any higher than that. I don't mind if I have to buy second-hand since my budget is limited, I just don't know what exactly to look for, so thank you so much for your help anon. :)
>you may need to be a bit flexible (in terms of finding what you can get for a dress) if the event is in one month.
Oh, definitely. It's in exactly a month tomorrow, so I get that I might not get certain things in time if I'm not careful.
>what kind of dress are you interested in? something plain or with a print? do you want to go more elegant and OTT?
I really like stuff like pic related. Like I said, I don't know much about lolita (though I am reading right now), but I liked this dress so much I saved it way back when I saw it without even knowing anything about it. I think I'd like something more elegant, not with a super prominent print, but not all one color either. I definitely want it to be majority black though, maybe with some kind of gold or silver accent. I really love stuff like this >>8517917.
>are you plus size, busty, or otherwise would need something custom-made?
I'm not plus size or particularly busty, though my hips are pretty wide for my waist size. I'm a 34C, and my measurements are
>37" loose bust, 31" tight underbust
>25" waist
>38" hips
I'm somewhat on the shorter side at 5'2", and my inseam is only 26". I wear an 8 in dress size and a medium in shirts and such. I hope that helps. I know certain brands run smaller, so I might not fit into all of them?

Thank you so, so much for helping. You're amazing.

you are welcome! happy to help a baby gothic lolita.

i just lost my post. look for the following brands: Moitie, Atelier Boz, Atelier Pierrot, Black Peace Now, and alice auaa. they are most likely to fit your aesthetic. Alice and the Pirates as well, especially for blouses. your waist is small enough that the major brands should fit but i do not know about torsos (i wear boystyle and can't into dresses).

hit up Closet Child (they update in 3.5 hours, 4AM EST every Thursday and Sunday, and you will get your shit within the week usually), and Yahoo Japan auctions with a shopping service (FromJapan, Buyee, etc.). even with shipping these are often better value and less likelihood of scamming than Western markets and you can make sure they arrive quicker. well, look in the sticky or other lolita threads to see where people are discussing secondhand sites.

okay cool. convert those measurements into cm (since that's how everything is measured in lolita) and you'll be golden - was asking because if you're plus size your choices become a bit narrower. (not totally nonexistent, but can get tough esp with a deadline) I think you should be able to fit into the majority of shirred (elasticized) brand.

for secondhand sales: lacemarket, lolita sales in english group on FB, lolita sales worldwide on FB

if you're a noob and don't know what you're looking for (like the names of any dresses) lacemarket might be easier for you to browse, hopefully some anons maybe can throw some dresses out at you or find you some links. be aware that to shop you'll need some sort of feedback - ebay is fine, just also be ready to prove that the ebay account is yours (I know you can edit some sort of bio section on ebay so just say like "this is ____ on lacemarket/this is ____ on FB" or something like that).

I would say focus on a dress and accessories and a blouse in the secondhand sales. for shoes and legwear, you can always find stuff that you may already own or can just run to the mall and buy - for example, plain black tights or lace tights and a pair of elegant black heels.

hopefully I don't look weird posting this but I put together this spreadsheet for online lolita and loliable accessory stores - I have everything marked as to whether they are USA or international, since you used inches I'm assuming you're american, so since you're working on a time constraint you will probably want to look at places based in the USA. Personally I'd recommend checking out Lily of the Valley and Necrosarium (also operates a website called mazo punk) Anything from anywhere else you should probably message them first and ask them if they offer a fast shipping method and if items are ready stock or not.

This looks super helpful. I've already found like ten dresses I like just by searching for dark-colored dresses, lol. I'm running the names through the archive to see if they've been posted about before, so it's not too bad actually. Thank you for telling me about it.
>for shoes and legwear, you can always find stuff that you may already own or can just run to the mall
This makes sense. I have a few things that I think might work just off the top of my head. I know petticoats are important, and I have three just from cosplay/halloween costumes and stuff. They're not super high-quality or anything, since the two I bought for cosplay were cheap ones off of ebay, and the other halloween one is leg avenue I think. Does petti quality matter, or is that another thing where I can just use whatever I already have?

for the items that say "loltia" "gothic/punk" etc there should be drop down boxes - you should click on the brands that drop down or go to the items menu and click from the drop down menu ("one piece" "skirt" etc)

gothic/punk fashion is a different category from lolita. even though there's gothic lolita you want to look in lolita because it stems from lolita, not gothic and punk fashion. moi meme moitie is the only lolita brand in the gothic section. under the lolita menu the brands that would sell more gothic/gothic-friendly pieces are alice and the pirates, baby the stars shine bright, and *maybe* innocent world - they do have a couple stained glass prints.

cheap halloween petticoats definitely will not have enough volume on their own. the best cheap petticoat there is at the moment is on ebay sold by 'victoriangirldress'. it's about $20 i think, the sizing is weird but make sure you get the one that's the oldest age group - i think its like, 13-16 years or something? that one should fit you just fine. i would say one of those plus one or two of the ones you already have should give you some nice poof, the vgd one I own and though it's kind of de-poofing it's given me some good poof. they're from china though, you should definitely go and order one right now if you want it to come in time.

other wise, you could try to find a malco modes petticoat. they're square dancing petticoats, but people have posted about them before - i forget the numbers, but there are a couple models in particular that people like to use for lolita that aren't too ridiculously poofy and are the correct shape. you could buy one new, or find a used one on ebay. VGD and MM both are a-line petticoats but you can roll up layers to make a more cupcake or bell shape if you need it for your dress.

anyways, when things are coming together please come back to the lolita general or coord help thread because we'd all love to see how you're coming along!

When you find a dress on lacemarket or closet child, you might want to visit lolibrary and check the measurements of the dress. You already have a good size for lolita, but some dresses run really small and you might want to check it beforehand.
