I don't consider them lolita. Most of lolita is in the silhouette, and the long skirts (like mid-calf and beyond) don't fit that silhouette

I do. Not as long as the dress in your picture but the ones who go to half your calf's like IW and JetJ does on most people over 165 cm.

It does not ruin the silhouette if you use the right petticoat.

Any dress/skirt length that could be termed "mini" or "maxi" I think doesn't suit lolita. You want to be somewhere in the range of lower thigh to mid calf, with the appropriate amount of poof.

Personally I don't consider OP's picture lolita. The longest a dress or skirt should be is mid calf length, longer than that just doesn't have the right silhouette.

The dress pictured doesn't look a lot like lolita to me, but I own a couple of long Innocent World dresses that I definitely consider lolita. Some they vary in length and shape but all of them still need a petti to look good.

This. Plenty dresses longer than mid calf look lolita, like IW's dresses when worn by shorter girls.
VM and MM have been releasing longer dresses for a while that fit the lolita silhouette, too, and I have no issue with longer dresses so long as there is a proper amount of poof and they fit the overall aesthetic theme/colour/material-wise.
A lot of what Fanny wears isn't lolita to me because of the way she styles her outfits, but most of them have the potential to be lolita.

Continuing on from this, I really like longer dresses when they're styled well. Sacred Night and Mozarabic Chant in long are two of my favorite wardrobe pieces, and I've never got the feeling that someone thought they didn't look lolita, irl, on /cgl/, or otherwise.
I don't get where the hateboner for long dresses came from. I can understand not liking Baby's new frilly waterfall look, but long dresses have been around and done well for quite a while.

Yeah, some (mostly older) VM is a bit too small in the waist for me thanks to my rectangular shape and nonexistent waist (66.5cm), but for the most part I'm good. Luckily all of my wishlist pieces from them are 70+.

No. Longer skirts can be more dolly, mori, victorian, aristocrat or romantic goth but never lolita. Also, shorter skirts that go too up above the knee like some salopettes aren't lolita, but fairy kei/pop kei.

They're not "too long." They're intended to be long. While IW might offer a longer size for taller people, VM's dresses, like AatP's "long" dresses, are made for the "average" lolita, who is pretty short.
It's funny that everyone's bloomers are in a bunch about long dresses now despite the fact that they've been around for ages. Even if they hadn't been, styles evolve.
So long as the piece fits the aesthetic (OP's pic doesn't), I really see no problem.

Being 5'11", long dresses are a blessing to be.

I don't like long JSKs also because i'm short and so i look awful. Usually i prefer knee or a bit above the knee too, so AP is perfect for me, but BTSSB at times has too long jsks for my height, even the sweet ones at times are 91 cm.

I also have slightly bigger/more muscular calves and have never had this problem. You just need to make sure the dress hits you below the like bump of your calf. Also, you can wear high heels with these looks.

Unfortunately the longer lengths make me just look short or the dress looks like it's neither here nor there. High heels are also not an option for me most of the time due to foot problems, although I do occasionally ignore my podiatrist/doctor recommendations and just deal with the pain.

I do have some from before I sold it, but they're pretty horrible and the outfit would probably get me posted to the ita thread since I was trying to find a way to make it work for me before selling. If you email me I can link you some worn photos from the person who sold it to me - although they're public photos on social media I don't think they'd appreciate the photos being up on the archive here. They don't give you an idea of the length though as they aren't full body shots, more like test photo shoot ones. I feel like even though it's a gorgeous dress the length is bloody hard to wear (at least on me) and I was actually considering getting the whole thing taken in and shortened before I sold it.
