Editting doesn't take a ton of effort or cost. You just need the footage, editing software and someone who can tweak things into juicy drama.

So I watched this, and I can understand that anyone who gets called out on doing something awkward would wanna say "No that's not me, that's not what I do." Regardless if Yaya meant what she said or not, the words that came out of her mouth were one whole sentence which was "Jessica approaches cosplay in the wrong way." We all get that you wanna talk about craftsmanship and appreciating the "art", Yaya, but you still said someone was going at it the wrong way when truly there isn't. When you say "Have fun" That's what we all do already.

Anywho, my only problems with this video are 1. you shouldn't have to make these videos to begin with. Be adult about it, own up to what you may have done and tell the truth. Some people won't believe ya, some will. And what really shows your true colors is how you choose to handle it. 2. The instant she had "gifts" for Jessica I was done. I liked how Yaya stepped up her game with really nice fabrics and such like 5-7 years ago. Then she got a tit job and it became ALL about them.

Jnig is that vapid girl everyone knows and nothing more. We even know how her story is gonna play out, but she doesn't seem to know. Living it up on just your beauty never works out. I know this is a very unpopular opinion for which I surely will get some shit but after seeing the show and her vids, I seriously question the general opinion of this place that Yaya was the unnecessary evil in cosplay or something. I really like her craftmanship and even if this damage control stuff came up, I understood her worry about her protegé who seemed a bit too young to find the right balance in sexy vs craftmanship. The video with JNig is surely meant to appease some angry JNig-neckbeards that fling even more of their junkfood-induced shit in Yayas general direction and therefore, I agree that it is mostly damage control and propaganda but it is an intelligent solution to end this huge shitfest.

Of course, a TV-show would overdramatize everything but not everyone watching the show is a cosplayer themselves who can tell A and B apart and some people don't get that different opinions on a topic not necessarily mean a fight between two people and that it is a difference whether a grown-up person choses to wear a skimpy outfit or a young girl is influenced in a way that can easily ruin her reputation andgive her a lot of unwanted attention.

Actually the show made me like Yaya much more than I did before, cause we see her expressing concern about being a worthy judge and about craftmanship and stuff.

I think you are reading way too much into this. A number of events within that show are staged and scripted to sound like they have some kind of order, or that Yaya really has a "protegee". They likely threw that in there to make her sound like she's a constant mentor to the younger girls.

I can praise Yaya for some of her good work, but I think she's personally overdoing it. I don't think she's evil or some megavillain, but she could use some avoiding to sound like an after-school special hero of cosplay.

If anything, she's stressed set a negative standard about needing to make calendars, the pressure to churn out a new cosplay per each con (how many people can afford this so effortlessly?), and this is all not just based on the show, but HER public actions.

I've recently talked to people who didn't know much about cosplay but have expressed interested in it before, but now they feel so intimidated by the fact that the show's gone far enough to set all these ridiculous standards, and obviously with Yaya signing up, she knows what she was getting herself into. It's been her "pet project" for some time. Had she believed this was all "for fun" as her FB stresses, then it'd be less about her making large ass campaigns and focusing on genuinely trying to work within the cosplay community to improve some of the warped mentalities.

The debate about sexy versus craftsmanship is a good one, but the fact remains that Yaya's opinion sounds like she's massively contradicting herself, and it's surely not based on her "spliced" words only in that show. I don't understand though why people think this is her being "genuine." I'm sure she appreciates accurate work but to go that far to be a "mentor" was just her being placed in a role to look favorable to the audiences.

Of course, this is all not for fun and I did not read her fb-post on that but I really get how it is important for someone who wants to be judge and 'ambassador' and also makes a living out of cosplay, the standards are extraordinarily high. I never got the idea of her applying her own standards to the community by the show itself, even though the whole mentoring thing had me raising an eyebrow as well.

I have to say I liked the fact that she is setting such a high standard for herself, because if she did not, how could you respect her as a judge? I think she is under the permanent pressure of someone surpassing her which would be crucial in her case because she makes a living from it.

I can understand people are intimidated by such a high standard but I always got the feeling it will only be applied to those who want to make their hobby their profession as well.

To me, it makes her more likeable to be like that because it shows she is aware of her position and actually works to maintain it. What would make her unlikeable would be to rely on her former reputation only and use it to sell something. I think it gives her the image of someone still working on themselves as well, which is something I approve of.

Actually, I myself have never felt really competitive about cosplay myself but if there are high monetary prices at stake in US convention, I can understand the stress somehow and I am actually a bit envious of the possibility to gain money from cosplaying and being able to finance some of your projects through it.

But maybe all in all it might be my perspective as someone who has neither been to the US, nor to one of those convention, that allows me to see it all that way.

You can't copyright clothes because they are utilitarian. Primark could buy a Vivienne Wstwood bag, cut it up and use it for a pattern and it wouldn't be infringing. But the minute you copy a logo you're done. That's why so many brands cover their shit in their logos - its not because anyone genuinely think it looks good, it's because it makes it easier to prosecute people who would copy.
