I've noticed a worrying growing trend lately in the Cosplay scene.
Over time more and more girls are trying to grab a juicy piece of e-fame by pandering to the male audience by doing something I don't agree with.

The oversexualisation of cosplay while pretending this is just how they see the character. On top of that you'll be able to quote many of these girls in interviews clearly stating that they are somewhat of a cosplay ambassador.

If you want to turn cosplay into some kind of fetish or soft porn, that's okay in my book! I still have a penis last time I checked. However for the sake of your own personal integrity, at least be up front about it.

There have been many whispers going round amongst community veterans about this trend, yet few have spoken out about it in fear of being vilified and chased by herds of angry teenage children foaming at the mouth, semi-boners still fresh in their pants from over-exposure to their idol. Not a pretty sight.

REAL cosplay is not about raping an artist's original design by showing as much tits and ass as possible.

>> No.6843035

Completely agree with you OP. I got hugely bitched out just recently for making this same point on the MCM page- the Tumblr anti-slut-shaming brigade was foaming at the genital warts. Cosplay is not about selling sex, it's about geeking out over a character you love. Girls who want to use it to whore themselves out should just fuck off to Suicide Girls and leave the genuine fans in peace. I especially hate how they're trying to make conventions pander to their bullshit and alienate the long-time fans with all this recent cosplay is not consent business. Just punch anyone who harasses you, it's not the fucking con's responsibility.

I can honestly say I don't give a shit. If it's a person's prerogative to be fap fodder to a bunch of nerds and they enjoy it, then fine. It's not my choice.
And if I don't get as much recognition for putting in the detailed homage to my favorite character, and no beta orbiters come flocking to me because I didn't show T&A? Well that's fine too. I lose nothing, and better yet all of those vapid little perverts can go bug some other naive girl with some cleavage and not me.

The only thing that upsets me, because I do feel this affects me indirectly, is that whole "cosplay=/=consent" bullshit that's surfacing now. For one this can send off the message that all women in the cosplay community are implicated in this movement (btw we're not and I certainly don't agree with it~), and second of all this is just teaching people to blame something or someone else, whether that's the convention or the retarded horny boys, for how women dress themselves and the comments they receive because of it. Yeah, lewd sexual comments happened back in the early 2000s too but nobody made a big deal of it then because people knew how to take some personal responsibility--as in if they didn't want to be treated like sexualized objects, they'd dress in a manner that wasn't as outright sexy. And they certainly wouldn't dress DOWN their original characters to what's basically a bra, underwear, and a wig and expect that nobody should say shit to them.
Just who the hell do these girls think they are?

as a 13 yr vet, no he didn't. We older cosplayers around these parts talk about it all the time.

We raise eyebrows at people selling prints of themselves, sexifying characters who are so not sexy, telling people not to look at your tits while you showcase them, and then hiring professionals to make the impressive parts of your costumes and then making the super simple parts themselves.

It all reeks of attention whore with as little effort as possible. It's really obvious to everyone who has been around a few years. We had it before with places like varitease and Alisakiss but it was contained, it was only like 10 people, and they made costumes other than "zomg look at sexy me"

But you know, it's hard to say how it effects things. Will it be a phase until the next thing? What happens when these girls grow up and those pictures surface? Does it change the face of the hobby? Does anyone but us care?

Are we discussing about how Jessica Nigri and her PR (yeah, she has a manager...) bitched at a photographer and took credit and money for a photo he took too?

They can post and/or sell that photo all they want, no promise of compensation was made to the subject and the subject agreed repeatedly to be photograph as evidence shows.

>Its the males fault.

I dont know what people want. If you try and stop a women from being a skin baring attention whore, then your oppressing them. If you give attention to attention whores, your objectifying. Ladies: Men have genitalia, and brain functions that like arousing things. We dont sit there and say "better look at them tits and rev up my pelvic gyrations!". It just happens. It biological and it makes us look at things that are sexy sometimes, even with the best self control. So if your tits are hanging out and your wearing a g-string that would make a napkin feel like plate armor, and you DONT want attention at a COSPLAY con for a hobby that is based around people LOOKING at you in your work, then I'm sorry but your confused.
Yes, there are creepers. They are weird and they gawk a little too much. But running to your friends and saying, "he kept staring at my nipple pasties like I wanted people to see that I'm wearing nothing! God, so gross. Oh! more photographers! Better strike a pose and then say its rude for them to look!".
Cosplay for the love of the hobby. Attention whores and public masturbaters can both go to a strip club. If your cosplay is a bit revealing, then fine, but dont expect to see people sitting around you with blindfolds discussing the philosophy of your stitching patterns.

>REAL cosplay is not about raping an artist's original design by showing as much tits and ass as possible.

I hate this argument with a passion. There is no "real" cosplay and unless your in an actual competition with actual guidelines then there are no formal rules in a niche hobby.

It doesn't matter if you make your own clothes, know the source material, wear simple outfits or construct crazy props and armor The minute you deside to dress up as a particular character YOU...ARE...COSPLAYING

There are good quality costumes and bad quality costumes but there is no real or fake here. You either do it or you don't and really why do people care so fuckin much? "WAAA their showing their ass and getting likes" how does this really affect your life? Do you want the admiration of those same fanboys who oogle any piece of clevage they see? Does the girl's bikini top take away the quality of your handstiched dress with elaborate embordering? As long as their costumes do not viloate con dress code then you really have no say what people can and can't wear. However you DO have a say what YOU can wear and your own skills.

Instead of bitching about all the people going down the skimpy route, maybe you should just focus on your own non skimpy costumes so that way you stand out more as you're not treating the convention as wannabe Victoria's Secret fashion runway.

But the point of cosplay is to dress us as a character you like. I know it's a hobby, but if you want to dress up as say sailor moon, dress up a her, if you want to wear a wig that looks like her hair and a completely non-canon outfit that she would never wear as an established character you are supposed to be dressing up as, do that. And it's the -cosplayers'- problem?! I've always thought this attitude was bullshit for this very reason. Go talk to the fucking comics and gaming industries about their character designs; don't bash the girls who (with some exceptions; I WILL GRANT YOU that there are a few who do it to show off their bodies (and anyway they are just that--THEIR BODIES, not yours)) are just trying to show their love for their favorite characters/franchises, which just so happen to be sexualized designs made by and/or for men.

You're missing what I'm trying to argue.

>But the point of cosplay is to dress us as a character you like.

See right there you're overcomplicating things. There is no "point" in cosplaying. That awesome Monster Hunter cosplay is not anymore "real" or "valid" than a kid who walked into a con cosplaying as his Naruto OC. The very foundation of cosplaying involves people dressing up as a character that's it.

There's no qualifying factors such as accuracy, quality you just have to dress up as a character. Elements like that are what we add as hobbiest in order to achieve a higher quality costume. There are certainly way more rules involved in making a great cosplay but we're not talking about good or bad we are just talking about what is and is not cosplay.

Sure I can walk in a Madoka gathering in casual clothes and say I'm a rule 63, casual Madoka who dyed his hair black. I'm cosplaying and I could consider myself a cosplayer at that moment but because I did not take the time to properly create the outfit means I will be ignored by the masses for having a bad costume. However, at the very core I am cosplaying.

Look at all the people dressing up as their LARP characters, OCs, Giginka's, fan art outfits, concept sketches that only exist in artbooks and any other famous fan design. We all accept these things as real cosplay due to the fact they are dressing up as characters. People wearing revealing outfits fit into this group nicely.

Why is this even this big of a deal?

People gonna do what they do, attention whores or otherwise. At the end of the day they're not really that much of a problem even if they are kinda annoying. I'm pretty sure if a photographer takes a picture of someone, they don't have rights to sell or distribute it unless the person in the picture waives their rights.

An event I signed up for recently has a photographer go around and take pictures of people who participate. There's always a clause in the terms of service for signing up that you waive your rights and grant permission for the photos to be taken and distributed. I imagine a clause like that wouldn't be in there if someone could take a picture and that be that.

I've got no problem with people trying to sex-up cosplay so long as they don't spew bullshit excuses and act like they don't know what they're doing. Nobody cosplays a Dead or Alive character because they truly believe they are an inspirational role model and grounded, well-rounded character.
You're doing it because people can stare at your tits and ass and you like the attention and they like your tits and ass. Everybody wins so long as you don't try to bullshit your way out of this.

Me, I love tits. I love ass. Get your legs out, show off your curves, get your cock out for all I care. But don't pretend you're doing it to show off your skills with a sewing machine. Just say that you're doing it because being hot is cool and I'll respect you a lot more.

tl;dr: Changing the outfit more risque is silly; the characters are often already implied to be attractive and characters in really risque outfits still exist.

A lot of women in anime, cartoons, and comics are overtly sexual. Larger breasts, high heels, big hair. But that's not to say it is quite silly to take a character and make it more revealing when if you wished to do that, might as well choose someone with a more revealing outfit.

Leloo wears that outfit through a good bit of the movie, Etna wears barely anything at all. Half the characters in fighting games are either in a teddy or a modified bikini. And... the South is hot during the summer.

Fucking Phillip DeFranco and his whole dedication to being a slavering "DAYUM CHECK OUT DEM BOOBIES" brodude who totally cares about the issues and has strong opinions about social justice and feminism and including women in male hobbies, but will go on at length about how he wants to do terrible degrading things to Nigri because she's so smoking hot that he just can't help himself since seeing her reduces him to a twitching pile of dick and drool.

But, you know, fuck him and every like him, in general, for being an avatar of everything wrong with the internet.

If a female cosplayer is damn good and lands a job as a model or a PR accessory, and she gets paid to make costumes and show off at cons and events, then that's fine. If they have the skills to do that, then I think it's pretty fucking cool that they even get the chance. However, I don't think that justifies the obsessive e-stalking and idol worship because some girl knows how to watch what she eats, wear make up, and use the same skills that thousands of other cosplayers already mastered because they felt like it. Seriously, combing and styling a wig and putting together some craft foam armor doesn't make you a fucking genius.

A womens body were meant to please men both visually and sexually.

the are meant for those men that got the guys to physically take her and lead her away from her friends or whoever she usually hangs out with, as beautiful women rarely are alone.

be it force, agression or persuasion. its legit.

That said, the visual part is that its suposed to be sexualised. we are not looking for a womans personality in COSPLAY. very rarely. that elizabeth cosplayer has more emotion and personality in that look then 80% of the most popular cumdumpsters cosplayers.

since women cant physically fight, they just fight mentaly and talk badly about other women, this proves male and female roles further.

The only time a womans cosplay or clothes indicate any personality that is UNIQUE and not a hivemind, is when she wears those clothes on a normal day aswell.

Da fuq? So... a woman cosplaying her favorite character isn't personality unless she does it all the time? This completely disregards the fact that cons provide less harassment prone environment for such activities. Sorry, but I wouldn't for example think that a girl going to the grocery store dressed up as Madoka or Wonder Woman so much had personality as she was acting a bit unhinged. And even if the cosplay in question at the con is being done for attention whoring reasons, that still shows some of her personality. It's just that her personality happens to be shit.

>> No.6855961

As a female who's fairly conservative when it comes to dressing and who isn't horribly comfortable with oversexualized anything I can safely say I wouldn't care if girls at cons cosplayed in string bikinis or whatever as long as the place wasn't flooded with them and they didn't make a huge fucking deal about people ogling their preshus bewbs.

I don't care if they are comfortable with their bodies so they don't mind revealing more or if they're attentionwhores or sjws or whatever the fuck the reasoning behind being nearly naked lies in.

But don't make a huge fuss over some mouth breathing basementdwellers drooling over you when you should have expected that by going to a place where such people are much more likely to be in large concentration.

If their behavior is crossing the line or ill-willed and you feel it's negatively affecting the con experience then find a way to deal with it properly, by confronting them and letting them know their behavior is making you uncomfortable. You'd be surprised how many people don't realize that a certain type of behavior isn't always appropriate, especially if they don't have much social exp to begin with. If they ignore you, then have con security deal with them.

That said, if the behaviors are harmless then don't try to shame people for being people. A couple stares repulse you, so what? don't make it into a fucking movement.
Don't tell the people who are aroused by your costume that they're disgusting pigs who need to check their privilege.

You can't control people's natural reaction to things.

Patriarchy is a term for societies in which male is the favoured gender, and in which men hold power, dominion and privileges. >I deserve free birth control paid for by men because vagina
>I deserve half of my husband's estate that I had no hand in earning because vagina

Maybe it's paid by men because apparently men deserve a job over female candidatures? You can't have your cake and eat it too...

>I deserve respect for having lots of sex even though the men did all the work to get me in bed because vagina

As for this, it's the opposite. Patriarchy wants women to stay in the kitchen and be pure virgins or something like that. It's the men that are being pushed to have sex because it's so manry, no?

>Maybe it's paid by men because apparently men deserve a job over female candidatures?

That would be difficult, since last I checked AA hiring favors women.

Or do you mean higher-up jobs that more men have because more men work for them since men have to be successful to even be seen as people?

>As for this, it's the opposite. Patriarchy wants women to stay in the kitchen and be pure virgins or something like that. It's the men that are being pushed to have sex because it's so manry, no?

That doesn't change the fact that men are the ones who actually go out and be proactive in having sex while all women do is sit around and wait for people to get into their pants. How does that deserve the same respect as a man who's rich, confident, and socially prestigious enough to lay lots of attractive women?

Wait...you still believe in the gender wage gap myth?

When you account for actual, you know, choices people make in what careers to pursue and what jobs to pursue within those careers, it pretty much vanishes.

On a related note, Harvard's Women's Law Association has its own list of "best firms to work for," pretty much entirely measured on the things women statistically tend to value in the job market more -- flexibility, time at home, maternity leave conditions, etc. These are forms of compensation provided in lieu of higher salaries. That women lawyers coming from Harvard maintain these preferences that exist across all industries shows how absurd it is to not take these into account and makes any representations that don't do so lies by omission.

Women want the better working conditions AND the same salary as men for less work. Of course, men can still work shitty hours, since who cares about them lol.

fuck you.

You're this buttranged because you can't face your own shortcomings? what a fucking joke. Just because passive aggressive beta faggots like you have such a hard time achieving anything in life doesn't mean it's the same for everyone.

Women don't get CEO positions as often because it's still not culturally acceptable for a woman to have a higher ranking position as a man, cause you know, women are so helpless and weak.

you know who really is helpless and weak here? It's people who refuse to accept that they have faults and limits. You can't overcome your shortcoming if you keep blaming other people for them. You seem to favor blaming other people instead of coming to terms with the real issue. Classic beta faggot behavior.

Of course, you're a troll. And since i'm bothering to reply i'll give you a 2/10.

everyone is too obsessed with being a special snowflake and having their own concepts, ideas, genderbends, slutty takes on things, etc.

if you're going to cosplay a revealing character, sure as hell be revealing...but atleast stay to the original design. im not going to lie, i'm not a fan of OC.

Op's girl cosplayed an official design. So she gets away with it. But if you're gunna jnig everything and just add tits and whore makeup, thats on a completely different level of "cos-slut".

no, you're not right. Men are in positions of high authority because their fragile ego demands it not because society has unrealistic expectations of them. In fact, isn't it expected for a man to advance up the corporate ladder much easily than women? If a woman is in charge, the men would feel inferior which is a big no-no.

And you know something? holding on to such antiquated beliefs is what makes us backwards. We won't allow a woman to lead us because her femininity is somehow threatening a non-existing balance. Which is that men always on top, taking care of the women. Even though the roles have changed significantly in recent years, we're nowhere near an egalitarian society yet.

>A position women support when it benefits them.

You would think so, wouldn't you, troll? But that is true of everyone if anyone at all, men and women.

But why get involved in the hobby in the first place then if you don't like the female designs of the characters?

Also, the skimpier dressed characters are more popular as cosplays.

Look at how many slutty sailor moon cosplayers there are. Pretty much any female who has cosplayed sailor moon is megaslut.

And the only reason these "fragile egos" (read: need to succeed) exist is because of male gender roles dictating they do, reinforced by women who are more attracted to men with more power and social prestige.

>Which is that men always on top, taking care of the women.

That's how women want it to be. There's a reason women loath stay-at-home dads and hate dating men who don't make more than them..

Men and women are equally responsible for enforcing harmful gender roles. Until the media industry kicks the entirety of one gender out of its offices, both will contribute. The only real solution is for people to stop being such fucking sheep and learn to be their own dude, regardless of what society thinks people of their gender should do. Then maybe men would stop fucking everything that moves and women would stop obsessing over 'marrying up'.
