re : >>10699091

Uh, you're not going to get the articulation you want but the closest I would suggest is probably wire that's wrapped around black vinyl or duct tape, with the end being made out of either cardboard or foam. Pick your poison on that. Either way, you're going to have to make either a bolt or holster it onto a belt on your dress, because the other option is wearing a butt plug, and while that's -fine-, I'm pretty sure you don't want to do that.

Anyways, anyone have a decent sound activator? I'm drafting out a Gridman SSSS cosplay right now, and I'm trying to see if I can lazy this out. Worst case scenario I'm using some coding to get the effect I want.

I think you'll have to pick one option over the other. The thinness of the tail leaves you with little room to brace it to overcome gravity. You can try reinforcing the base to make it have a little lift?

How can I dye a hoodie everywhere except the hood? I’m trying to dye a red hoodie brown but without dying the hood itself and I’m not sure if there’s a good way to go about it. I guess I could alternatively buy a brown hoodie and a red hoodie, cut off both hoods, and try to sew the red one onto the brown base garment, but I don’t actually know how to sew and it seems like it would be hard to do that well.

Sewing is way easier than dyeing. Dyeing can easily go wrong and leave you with a splotchy garment, whereas you can always hide poor stitching. I would suggest Frankensteining 2 hoodies together instead.

depends on how nice you want it to look. anybody can pin down and whipstich two pieces of fabric together. literally just find some matching thread and look up whipstitch on youtube. if you're willing to go slower, then you can use a stitch that looks neater. if you have a person who sews available to you, you can go learn to use a machine from them, which takes more time, but then you have that skill for life.

>> No.10716192

How much dyeing experience do you have? It's pretty hard to prevent the dye from bleeding even if you hold the bottom half steady in a pot of dye. The nature of the fabric itself with draw moisture, thus the dye, upwards into the hood.

Is it okay to cosplay as your own take on a superhero’s design as opposed to faithfully reproducing a specific one of their designs from the source material? I don’t really know if that question makes sense the way I phrased it, but I want to do a cosplay of one of my favorite characters and I’d like to make my version of his costume a sort of amalgamation of some of his various looks, using one in particular as a heavy basis with elements of some of the others. Thoughts on hair color for a Spike Spiegel wig? It's technically dark green, and nearly all official art has at least a tint of green, but often is more than half completely black shadow. Looking at figures it seems roughly split between "greenish" or just "black" renditions.
Cosplays too seem to be split (though a lot of curly-haired guys just seem to use their own hair) and I'm having trouble deciding which way to go.
I've noticed with the popularity of MHA some places sell Deku wigs with a green top that changes to dark green/black as it lowers but those don't look quite right to my eyes. Maybe a subtler "black but with green tips/highlights" is the way to go?

I personally associate Spike with black hair. A lot of 80s and 90s animes have characters colored hair so their hair will stand out from the line work (e.g. Lynn Minmay’s hair was originally meant to be black with a blue tint but it was later changed to just blue). If you want to do green, you should just get a green wig and tint it black to make the color duller. Black with green tips would look weird imo.

But here's what you're looking at. So you want to make the breast plate into two / or four pieces, but instead of cutting straight, you cut at an angle. If you pre-heat the foam before gluing you can get even better shapes, but you're really just making 45 degree angle pieces here and gluing them to spoof depth.

Hey /cgl/, I need some advice. I'm not happy with my final headdress for my costume. I'm gonna remake it instead of salvaging this one, but I could use some direction on how to make it better. The red pen marks heat erase btw, I just couldn't be assed to remove them since I hated the final product. The issues I noticed are:
>the ribbon
I didn't want to cut it into strips, but I couldn't get it to lay right and look good when folding for the life of me. The ends ended up fraying and needed to be sealed with a lighter. I just don't like how this looked at all. Should I even still keep the ribbon or use paint instead? I tested a swatch of my fabric with a satin stitch and it just ate up the delicate fabric, so that's out.
>The sewing
This part I really have difficulty on. I struggle with sharp corners even after reducing the seam allowance and clipping into the seams. I just hate how the peaks turned out. I couldn't sew down the ribbon either because my machine went too fast and the ribbon slipped around. I had to hand sew it, but desu I don't like the way it looked either.
>Stiffness
I was very indecisive on how to stiffen the floppy white cotton. I have featherweight iron on and very stiff cardstock-esque sew-in interfacing (which I could just stuff in I suppose), batting, and stuffing. What do you think would work best?

There's probably more issues I'm not seeing like with the pattern too. So, what can I do to improve the next iteration that I make, gulls?

>>10718882
Okay, I have a lot of ideas for what you can do to make it better

>the ribbon
You can stick with the ribbon or try bias tape if the ribbon has been super slippery. (Bias tape is not hard to make your self)
Look up mitered corners and how to do those (pic related). If the width proves to be very tough to manipulate, then I would suggest fabric paint, iron-on vinyl transfer, or satin stitching. I know you said that satin stitching ate up your fabric but the issue is likely that you needed to stabilize the fabric first with an iron-on or wash-off stabilizer, and also always practice on a scrap first to find the best stitch length/width. I've done as thin as 1/4" and 1/8" ribbon as trim like this, it's not impossible.

>the sewing
Looks like you might not be clipping enough off the corners or close enough to the edge. Also look into getting a point turner or at least using a dull but pointy tool to press out the corners. When the corners get small like this, you don't want to sew super sharp corners. A rounded corner on the inside will be less puckered when turned right side out. You can post a photo of what your sewing work looks like inside-out if you want a better diagnosis of your issue.

Slow down your machine.

>stiffness
Iron-on lightweight interfacing. Rule of thumb is that the interfacing weight should match the fabric weight. I suggest starting over from scratch. The order of steps should be:
- cut out the fabric pieces
- iron on the interfacing to the fabric
- mark where the ribbon/stripe goes
- pin ribbon or bias tape to where it needs to go and sew; or alternatively, pure satin stitch the stripe or paint it, etc.
- sew front and back pieces of the headdress together, clip and notch corners, turn right side out
- finish raw opening

Sorry for the block of text.

>> No.10718888

>>10718886
Forgot to add that if the fabric already has interfacing applied, then you probably don't need to further stabilize it to sew on the ribbon. If it's still catching, select a finer needle and adjust your stitch length (likely needing longer length). Always test on scrap if you're uncertain.

FWIW, I regularly go to Sakura-Con which almost always runs on Easter weekend. On Easter Sunday several times there have been people handing out fun-size candy or eggs, usually kids with their parents so I've never thought twice about accepting them.
I think for me it's only if a gift was "unprompted" if coming from an older person that would make me feel odd. Not even out of fear of poisoning, just kind of a general odd feeling. But since it ties into your character you could offer them after people take a picture or something - sometimes when I cosplay John Wick I bring a bag of chocolate gold coins (like the gold coins in the movies) and offer one to people if they recognize my cosplay. Having that "in" is fine and easier to accept a "no thank you" ime.

Robes are pretty easy to pattern and sew. There's likely some commercial patterns available for sale via places like Joann's or back on esty for indie patterns. Then, you'll need to research what fabric you want and buy it. This will probably be the "hardest" step as robes require a lot of fabric. Working on a Ghostface robe and I'm having trouble nailing down good fabric to use. In the movies there's a subtle "glitter" shine to the blackness that I'd like to recreate. The cloak pattern I'm using says I'll need upwards of 5 yds which can add up fast so I'd appreciate any tips on what to look for. There are a couple things I have been looking into:
>lurex
Apparently this is what they actually used in the movie. I have no experience with this type of fabric but in my research it looks like it's a material that's tough to work with (slippery fabric, might need a different needle) and I'm still a relative beginner with a sewing machine. Also is generally pricey and harder to find in-person.
>glitter nylon/polyester/cotton
Obviously much easier to find, even if I'm looking for something that's not extremely glittery. I am concerned about glitter's tendency to fall off and get everywhere but I guess that's largely unavoidable.
>general robe thoughts
I don't think I need a 2- or 4- way stretch fabric but I'd like something that can hang and drape nicely. Gloves are made out of the same fabric as the rest of the outfit.

I'm considering just using upholstery pleather since it's got good thickness and is dirt cheap, but the underside being white kind of shows on the sides of the belt/holster. Any thoughts/guides? You'll need a 4-way stretch fabric if you want to make the gloves out of the same fabric as the robe. If you're still a beginner, it'll be hard for you to make well-fitted gloves out of a woven fabric.
All non-glitter shiny fabrics will run you a pretty penny because they either use metallic strands (like lurex) woven/knitted into the fabric or the fabric is specially made or treated to give it shine.

Pic rel is 4-way mid-weight glitter spandex from Spandex World but it's $16/yard. If you don't want to spend a lot money, you're going to have to sacrifice accuracy to save on cost. Pretty much every option for glittery/shiny black fabric I looked at is over $10/yard, even at wholesale places.

>> No.10722341

>>10722163
One other option you could try out depending on how thin the fabric is: put some glittery material underneath the robe. The light that goes through would reflect off of it so it would seem like the robe is glittery when it's actually what's beneath it.

I'm not sure what material to would be best though, whether it's a glitter shirt or just adding some glitter wrap.

I can't speak to the websites you're talking about but I am a daily contact wearer. Here's how they differ:

Prescription Vision Contacts:
>obtained via optometrist
>Replaced daily or monthly depending on brand
>Washed using contact lens fluid rinsed on top of contact in hand
>There are optometrist brand color contacts, but they are usually pretty transparent as they prioritize vision and safety over style. They do not come in unnatural colors or styles.
>higher quality material, thinner plastic to be made more comfortable for long daily wear

Color Contacts for Cosplay / Costuming:
>usually obtained online
>reputable online retailers will usually require a prescription and eye curvature obtained from a optometrist.
>distributed in glass vials, one per contact
>some, but not all must be submerged in fluid for 24 hours before wear
>will expire after a year of opening

Just practice. It might help to stretch your hand muscles or transfer the paint to a bottle you can get better control of. I agree with the other anons though, if you're making your costume piping is actually pretty simple to add. And yes, it's not going to be as sturdy as a real leather belt, but it's a good alternative to straight pleather. Trying to find a good pattern for a Tatsumaki dress. I found the following Tumblr that goes into calculating measurements, but their second post about putting the pieces together is now disappeared. I have enough sewing knowledge to know which piece goes where but I can't really see what the final product looks like and don't want to waste time drafting a pattern if it doesn't look right.

https://8ertsfu.tumblr.com/post/135923215663/tatsumaki-dress-tutorial-part-1-patterning-and/amp

I've looked at some other cosplays and people vary between making it one continuous piece vs a separate bodice and skirt. I've also seen various fabrics from knit to satin. I feel like knit would be the most form-fitting but satin might be more...flashy?

Also, thought this tutorial for making the dress ends "float" was pretty neat.

I would recommend knit. It would hide any imperfections in the costume or your body better. You can also fudge the measurements a little more (like making it a bit smaller than your base measurements) and it'll still be formfitting.

Makeup might be something to look into if you don't need a lot of bushiness/volume.
I can grow a shitty "chinstrap" beard/goatee but even after a week it's still really light and patchy on my cheeks. But since I have dark hair I can apply makeup (with a lighter touch) to fill in and build out my facial hair, and the fact that there *is* a little actual hair/stubble in there makes it look more natural. I use this for characters like John Wick or Naked Snake where their beard is short enough to more-or-less be flat against their face.
It does take some practice to not end up looking like Billy Mitchell but it works for my needs.

You seem like nice person so I'll help you
>1. An okay wig mannequin with a male face
You can pick up any foam head from a beauty supply store or even the dollar store sometimes. What matters more is that the circumference of the wig head is the same as the circumference of your hairline. To cut the wig, you should wear the wig to make sure you're cutting it to the right length instead guessing on a wig head. Those should really just be used for styling.
>2. What type of hair product to use to do stuff like create a central bang together. Is hair wax fine?
You'll need heat to "set" the hair (wigs are plastic so when you heat up the fibers and then let them cool in a certain position, they'll hold that shape.) This tutorial from the faq will help you at least get the basic shape down and give you suggestions for what products you'll need for styling: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9INTODw6pu8
>3. And any other recommendations on what to buy besides bobby pins, hairclip, and netted wig cap?
You'll need a lacefront wig for this style since the hairline is visible. I suggest getting an Atlas from epiccosplay.

Godspeed, anon!

Unfortunately no, I put together my approach through trial and error mostly. A quick browse on yt shows that there are "fix a patchy beard" tutorials (not necessarily aimed at cosplayers) that are pretty similar to what I do.
My biggest tip would be to mix application methods, you want to avoid either having obvious pencil-lines or too-smooth "hobo clown" flat color. I like to use a makeup wedge and alternate between stippling narrow lines with the corner and laying down darker patches with the flat side, often the makeup will stick to my existing beard hair to make it look thicker. I mix in eyebrow pencil or a fine brush occasionally too. Generally a lighter touch is good but you can always just wash off and try again.
Ultimately it just comes down to practice. Understanding the "grain" of your beard and shape of your cheeks and jaw to know where hair will look natural, studying the character/actor's beard to figure out the details (where does the mustache connect to the beard? how much hair grows on their chin? what edges are trimmed or natural?)... it'll always look kind of artificial in closeup photos but at a distance it's good enough.

To add onto what the other anon said:
>2. What type of hair product to use to do stuff like create a central bang together. Is hair wax fine?
No, you can't and shouldn't use hairwax. Remember, a wig is made of plastic, it's not real hair and it won't behave like real hair. Like the other anon said, we use heat to shape the plastic fibers of the wig but it doesn't actually lock into place until the plastic cools. Then you can seal it using products like Got2B Freeze spray (the recommended) and/or Got2B Glued (use VERY minimally. Like pea sized).

>3.
Those are great for wearing, but it'll benefit you to buy some styling tools too. The necessities would be: Got2B Freeze spray and Glued, some long pins to keep the wig nailed to the wig head, good scissors, and alligator clips to partition the hair. Definitely watch some videos before attempting though.

Very late to the party here, sorry (longpost incoming)

Arda Wigs has a shade called Mirkwood Green (CL-040) that might be what you're looking for. It's mainly black with little wefts of green shades and a tad bit of blue mixed in (don't worry, the blues aren't noticeable at all. I believe they're there for a smooth blending of the black and green shades.)

https://arda-wigs.com/collections/CL-040-Mirkwood-Green

The Cady will give you a good idea how the colors will look with a short, "spiked"-ish (harhar) style. (The page for the style of wig I recommend doesn't have a pic of the particular wig in Mirkwood rn) I suggest buying two Hansels to get Spike's floof correctly (It'll land you about $60 USD).

To second >>10729740 looking at experience/specialties is even more important here than wigs. An armored mech suit, princess dress, or soldier's uniform are almost completely different crafting disciplines and it's rare to have a "jack of all trades" maker.
I can't vouch for it myself but a couple people I follow have plugged Cosmosii as a site where commission-takers can plug previous projects and specialties to help take some of the guesswork out of commissioning.

Ignoring that acrylic is plastic and widely available, you can definitely use another plastic. Polycarbonate may be better if you are worried about it breaking. Surely there are other plastics out there as well but those two are easy to find and either should work fine.

As for weight, as long as it's hollow and not super thick it shouldn't be that heavy. Certainly better than glass.

Welcome back, Patrick-anon. Honestly using your real hair usually isn't recommended for cosplay. Natural hair is harder to style, prone to oil and limping, and requires you to take down/redo the style every time you wanna cosplay this character. A wig is a better bet.

In cases like this where it's broadly up to interpretation, I like to look up what other cosplayers have done and evaluate if I think that looks good, like something I'd like to do.
Foo Fighters I almost always see it as hair done with VERY strongly defined spikes (see regular spiking tutorial for that), but a lot of artists interpret it as a cap she's wearing. It would be relatively easy to sew , although you'd get the different concerns of if it's breathable or easy to wear.

It came with really thin fabric over the eyes, I replaced it with some darker thin polyester (think like a lightweight women's scarf) that I can still see through but looks nearly opaque when looking on. Unfortunately now the mask is MUCH less breathable - there's no nose hole, only a little slit at the top of the mouth - as it seems like the new fabric doesn't let as much air through. It gets hotter and has condensation noticeably faster now.
So now I'm second-guessing what to use to cover the eye holes. I've used tulle netting before but that still shows more than I'd like of the eyes and face underneath. I hear leggings suggested regularly, but I don't think I can stretch them out over the eye holes and I'm worried about it not being opaque enough.
Or is this just a problem I'll have to live with?

I don't know your crafting/sewing skill so I'm going to assume you're a novice.
Timeline+budget is concerning, you're going to have to decide what cut-corners or close-enough you're willing to accept. Might be better off doing his S-Mart uniform as it's less fantastical.
Anyways, as someone who cosplayed Evil Dead II Ash a couple years ago, here are some tips. In general trawl local thrift stores and costume shops to find "acceptably similar" pieces to put together.
>gauntlet
I'd only do the hand since the wrist/forearm will be covered by sleeve. Blind Squirrel Props did a really good one (with a PDF guide) you can use for visual reference.
Here's an AvED gauntlet build: https://youtu.be/rKL2PVYo56I
With your time/budget I'd recommend looking for a generic "knight's gauntlet" or "robot hand" costume piece. Or go to hardware/automotive stores to find a mechanic/moto glove with vaguely similar details and spray-paint it metallic.
Remember that it's Ash's right hand - if you're right-handed make sure you'll still have the dexterity you want.
>shirt
Not sure of the correct name but searching "double-breasted" & "western" seems to be close. Unlikely to be easy to find but you can always cheat with a regular button-up like he wears in 1 & 2.
>cloak
I'll defer to other posters but use a material that's not actual chain-mail. Some sort of netting or knit fabric will have the look but not be nearly as expensive/uncomfortable/heavy.

continued
>pants
Find a gray/brown pair at a thrift store that you can dirty up.
>weathering & makeup
This is what'll really help tie it together - get a chip brush and watered-down cheap black/brown/dark-red paint to dirty up the clothes, plus use sandpaper to wear it down. A few bucks and an hour or so will tie the look together for that "fighting deadites in the mud" look. You can see on the costume that there are a couple pretty big cuts on the front of the shirt.
https://youtu.be/2ErLOmGZQMA
Ash only has a couple cuts but I've found that using some makeup (I use Ben Nye Thick Blood, but you could get away with red facepaint) to do the cuts - one on each cheek, across the lips, on Campbell's chin scar - adds the "look" as well.

Hope some of that helps - like I mentioned I've cosplayed Ash before so feel free to ask follow-up questions.

The closest things I found were
>heavy metal eyelet belt
Similar eyelets, but three prongs instead of two. Search terms "heavy metal"/"punk"/"goth" "eyelet"/"grommet"/"rivet" for similar styles with similar caveats.
>Michael Kors Square-Grommet belt
Grommets do not continue around the whole belt, colors aren't exact, fashion brand so will be relatively pricey and will have to find secondhand.

Alternatively - there are double-prong belts without grommets, you could make and affix your own square pieces onto them (made out of foam painted to look metallic, or whatever). This would be time-consuming and does run the risk of the pieces falling off, though. Looking at the design of your pictured belt, it looks distinctive in that video-gamey/fictional way that makes me think it's not based on a truly existing belt style.

Agreed with anon, you're gonna have to make that yourself. I personally think resin cast or 3D print is the way to go, as anon said retrofitting grommets with the square part could be tough if it falls off. Using some nasty glues like e6000 or contact cement should keep anything you retrofit stuck on. I think cast pieces would likely look better. Just depends how much time you have/what your budget is. The buckle looks like a double tongue heel bar, those are at least pretty easy to find luckily. Good luck.

Basics like polyester twill and gabardine will be fine for her dress. Matte satin could work. The capelet will either need gradient dyeing or custom print.
