Past highlights include: The ugliest couple you've ever seen getting married at a Zapp panel, the yearly swimsuit contest that died in 2013, the legendary female VA panel in 2017 or 2018 (it's all a blur at this point), Teddyloid definitely getting turned away at SeaTac and not being used as a ploy to draw more attendance in 2018, and any time John Swasey shows up. I believe at one point it came down to either the group had to go completely free of monetary transaction posts OR must mention it's unofficial, thus unaffiliated with Sakura-Con, and the group admin chose the latter.

Where do people post to find people to room with these days? Usually shit is figured out long ago but the girl booking our hotel room suddenly can't go and one of the others can only do one day now. I hate zoomers.

I would ask here but don't want to end up with creeps or guys and it's too convenient of a hotel to lose the room.

Can't wait to see true capacity cap. I'm surprised Sakura-Con is actually going to hit it (ETA sell-out: April 7)

How bad is it going to be? Will there be scalpers? Will it be a mad mess?

>> No.10749025

Oof, I would say it's the capacity with restrictions but if there actually are no capacity limits on the WSCC or the con anymore then yeah, it's going to be a big year.
Thanks for posting this though, I was waiting to get my pass once I'd figured out the rest of my logistics but I got mine now just to be safe.
If Sak has scalpers like ECCC it's going to be pretty weird but it is possible. I imagine dealer's hall, panels and everything will be more packed than usual.

Hate to say this, but if you aren't committed to the con by now you're setting yourself up for a potentially bad time. Sakuracon is thinking they will sell out by the end of this week with the remaining tickets they have. If you aren't going to buy now, it's hard to say what to expect other than a headache of a time getting one.

>> No.10749048

>>10749029
Echoing what >>10749032 said, if you don't get it now online, it's very, very, very unlikely you'll be able to get one on-site. Sakura-Con even did the monster math for you and forecast a April 7 sell-out day, so basically within these 3 days.

Think of it this way, if they don't sell out on the 7th, they'll probably sell out on the 8th, and the probability goes up exponentially for every day after that up to April 15.

Badge pickup starts at noon and goes till 10PM. Badge Pickup has always been a bit of a headache with Sakura con and I doubt this year will be any exception. Probably a good idea to get there first thing but honestly I am going to go around 1-130PM, after the door rush and enough time to make sure the volunteers know how to work the machines unlike previous years of hell.

Really I think so long as people get there before 3-4PM when a lot of people are getting out of school/work/etc, should be relatively quick. Shit storm city is going to be 5PM and shittier as time goes on.

I live nearby so is it possible to pick up my badge before the con actually starts? It’s a bit late to chime in now, but I stayed there in 2016 and the rooms were tiny. Not a good hotel if you were looking to hang out with people in the room, but it’s fine as a home base a couple crosswalks away from the convention center.

I would at least pickup on Friday even if you're not going until Saturday, it saves you from wasting your Saturday in line for an hour or two. Or just pick it up on Thursday. No tips other than observing the lines for a minute and looking to the front to see if it seems like those volunteers may have their shit together/look less confused and picking that line. Sometimes they funnel you to a specific one anyway.

General - The late night panels are the most fun/worth it. Scope out the dealer's hall/artist's alley but don't buy most of it, some AA stuff will be cheaper on the last day if it doesn't sell out. Gaming area is fun if you can get over the occasional whiff of terrible BO. Cheesecake factory and the closest restaurants are not worth it, go further out if you want a table or no wait. Freeway Park and the whole outdoor area behind the con center is nice for a breather and tons of photoshoots. Convention center staff are assholes about anyone loitering on/near the escalators for even a second. Utilize the bag/coat check when you buy shit you don't want to carry around.

At ECCC they had similar rules (there was a "no head coverings" sign with a Darth Vader helmet crossed out). I asked a con volunteer to clarify and they said that it was a convention center rule and up to WSCC staff to enforce, all but explicitly telling me they didn't care.
All weekend I saw everything from Mandalorians to Power Rangers to Spider-Men to mascot-style suits (with no visible medical masks, naturally) and I NEVER saw anyone get asked to take their helmet off or prove that they were wearing a mask underneath. I wore a total head covering for one of my cosplays and nobody gave me grief. I think everyone understands that if your whole fucking head is covered that counts as "nose and mouth".

Pic Related.
Using phone with leather gloves is an adventure.

At least I wasn't dressed like 40 other people. Even got talked to by a cute girl dressed as Maka. Was a good day. I forgot how spergy some of the people at the Zap panels are though.

Honestly I wouldn't call it mask work. I literally just looked through pig snout masks on Etsy for a week to find one. If I wasn't a lazy turd I'd have drawn on a mustache but here we are. On the plus side, wearing a cloth mask is a lot easier than applying the facial prosthetic I was working on. I was also able to wear the cosplay all day after my HUNK started to deteriorate and give me heat exhaustion from the mask. It'll be better for Kumori-con but I'm glad I had Marco to fall back on.

The Zap panels were a hoot as always.
Wearing a mask was just a bit silly imo because of the proof of coof vaccination or negative test but a bunch of people who go to these things are in shit health but otoh if they were that concerned they could also stay home. It might've come from the venue level though and it would be hard to blame the Sakura-con organizers in that case. It wasn't that big of a deal, just a minor gripe.

Artist alley was also a bit of a letdown, barely any dakimakura covers and titty mousepads and Jesus do they need better crowd management.

I totally forgot to check threads this year, woops. I've been exclusively posting in discord servers until this, but I still had a good time despite chaos.

I'm happy to see so many old gulls! It's great to see you all keeping well, I'm glad it looks like most of you had a good time. The masks do suck but the con itself seemed fine. Lots of regular attendees came back and I got to catch up with old IRLs I didn't expect to see there as well. It's definitely a welcomed return by me as a local.

I had a group of four wirh me included (felt like three most of the time), and me as the only previous attendee, so I got to play group mom.
It was chaotic because someone in my group recieved some news and had to leave site often to be with family, so we went back and forth between a few places to help them be there - we never got to attend a gull party, con party, rave, panel, or proper photoshoot (though I did do a few impromptu ones with some gulls which was super fun!) or stay on-site after 8pm, which ngl really bummed us out, but didn't hurt. We did get to pass by a few gull meetups but never could stay long :(

Ended up creeping the expo hall and dropping some collective $2k between the four of us. The con was still super alive everywhere, I didn't expect a full attendance but it felt like pre-coof.

Shocked at the autograph lines but I also never been to autographs before until this year, someone wanted a Steve Blum sig - are they always this awful to get done in timely manner? I didn't expect to wait the 3 hours of being in line for it to barely get through the first aisle of people and it really bummed my friend out :( our bad for not looking at how lines move beforehand though.

Despite that we had a good time. Seeing gulls and being able to talk a bit really helped - thank you guys really, it was tough for my friend this weekend. We're all excited to come back and eat more crickets :)

Hug your family today <3

>Shocked at the autograph lines but I also never been to autographs before until this year, someone wanted a Steve Blum sig - are they always this awful to get done in timely manner?
It's usually pretty long since there's no price barrier to limit people. I've never done a name as big as Blum but experiences in the past have easily been an hour+ for even mid-tier names.
