Were you using wig caps or the French braid method? I do cosplay and while I don't have as much as hair as you (mid back), I use two caps. One double open ended fishnet cap to catch a good chuck of hair, smoosh around evenly, and then pin. Followed by a regular nude wig cap to hold it in place.

Some wigs come in a "large" size, for big heads or those with a lot of hair to stuff like you. I'm not recommending cosplay Arda wigs, but double check whatever sizing they have for their "large" so you can look for bigger circumferences on other wig websites.

My question is how do asexuals live without emotions and the desire for sex? I'd kill myself if I didn't know how beautiful having emotions and expressing them through sex is. Sex is the most spiritual and romantic bond in existence.

>> No.10604231

How does buying from sites like Mandrake work? I’ve heard stories of shipments having insane charges added on top of the original purchase and truthfully I don’t really understand how it works. I’ve never purchased internationally before. I just want to make sure I don’t make a purchase and accidentally fuck myself over financially. If I buy more than one item do they come shipped in the same box or do I pay double shipping and customs on both? And what’s undervaluing??

>> No.10605648

>>10605632
Mandarake is a chain of stores, so if you order multiple things they will send them all to one location and pack it together. Then you will get a invoice for price + shipping, usually in a few days.
Use this to estimate your cost.
https://earth.mandarake.co.jp/help/shipping_options-en.html
>tldr
DHL is extremely fast (I've gotten stuff from Japan to USA in 3 days) but also expensive, it goes by size so it's best for small or heavy items.
EMS is also fast, slightly cheaper than DHL and goes by weight.
Airmail is the cheapest and slowest available right now.
Undervaluing is marking the value on the package lower than its contents. You only need to do this if you live somewhere with high customs costs, and the downside is undervalued packages can't be insured.
For reference, my last order was 2 figures shipped EMS and shipping was $30.

>Is there a bra that doesnt have a chest part?
It's called the gore and yes there are! You have a couple of options, but for a larger and lower sitting chest I think your best option would be to use a sticky bra that has a back band, no front gore, and if possible, clear straps (something like picrel). For characters like Momo from MHA, cosplayers tend to also use a clear strap to keep their cups or suit together. It wouldn't hurt to carry some skin safe body glue if you're worried about your "bra" showing.

While trying to look for the search term I used to find picrel, I actually found an article showcasing stick on bra options for bigger cups. Hope it helps: https://www.marieclaire.com.au/sticky-bra

I got into it by tweaking existing garments, taking them apart and learning how stuff is constructed. ie. see if you can buy pieces and then modify them to fit the cosplay. My first cosplay that I jerry rigged like that was shuichi from DRv3. This is easier because you don't have to "conceptualize" it mentally as much as if you drafted from scratch. Also, looking at how other cosplayers cosplayed your character is a huge help (because there is a fair amount of freedom you have in interpreting a 2d design in real life for example)

>How to into makeup and costume design?
Firstly, not a stupid question. Similarly to how you learn a new language, you need to have a combination of frequent and beginner-friendly practice, textbooks, and immersion into the "language" or environment. I learned sewing terminology from watching youtubers posting sew-alongs of their projects. I watched projects I had zero intention of making but found interesting because the more I watched, the more I could start to recognize the steps, challenges, tools, and techniques. Grab yourself a starter book for reference too. It doesn't need to be expensive or even cost you anything, vintage books are often great sources of clear and concise info, but there's also great beginner-focused books out there for free or cheap on the internet.

One of the biggest pieces of advice I can give you though is to not pigeonhole yourself into only receiving information that you THINK is going to be relevant to your project (ie. if you're making a theater costume, only taking advice or information from people who are making theater costumes rather than also accepting info from sewing grannies, historical costumers, cosplayers, and larpers). I'd encourage you to go further than just the sewing community too and watch videos about character and environmental design from artists too because a huge part of creating a realistic character is the design of their costumes/clothing. The key is just finding people and projects that you feel like spending your time watching.

I think you dropped your reply to >>10605896, anon. Great info though, I agree! Alterations are a great entry point for beginners because you don't need to make the whole garment from scratch.

>> No.10605971

>>10605914
From one beginner to another, it doesn't seem hard perse but there is a learning curve and the price of materials is so steep that it seems more cost effective to hand-embroider if you have the time and patience or to pay someone to use their machine to embroider it for you. I'd imagine making the file yourself and then sending it off to your commissioner would reduce the cost too.

Fellow guy that didn't know what he was doing - I found that teaching yourself horror makeup is a great way to get started. Noob mistakes like unnatural colors, heavier application, and such are actually positives in this context. Messing around with pic related to give myself cuts and bruises, sunken eyes, and gaunt cheekbones was a great way to familiarize myself with application and blending tools. Now I can do subtler touches like realistic contours for age or face shape, heavier scowling, or eyebrow shaping - all of which are really just scaled-back versions of making myself look like a ghoul.

>general hotel etiquette
Pretty simple to follow if you're not a cringy teenage weeaboo, just follow the basics of good public behavior and don't be a nuisance:
>Don't make a ton of noise in the hallways/areas near guest rooms, particularly late at night or early in the morning
>Don't clog up the already-crowded elevators by using them if you don't need to
>Don't block the flow of traffic
>Don't get in the way of any normie guests
>Don't fuck up any hotel property (staining your room's tub with bodypaint, messing up any public area artwork, etc)
>Clean up after yourself (don't leave trash around public areas, put all trash from your room in/around the wastebaskets)
>It's customary to tip bellhops and valet services, and some people leave tips at the end of their stay for the maid service

>What's the diff between staying at a hotel vs. an airbnb
I've always done hotels, but from friends who stayed at Airbnbs the biggest difference seems to be in transportation/parking. Depending on the convention, some nearby hotels will offer shuttle service to and from the con hotel; this can be useful if you plan to attend room parties or late night events that involve alcohol and you wouldn't be able to drive back. Its also useful if parking near the convention is scarce/expensive; hotel parking might be less expensive overall; alternatively you don't have to worry about the expense of using Uber/Lyft during peak times to avoid looking for a parking spot if there are few available. Airbnbs also have the bonus of having a kitchen which can cut down on food costs since you can bring groceries and don't have to rely on expensive convention/hotel/restaurant food for each meal.

Really which one is better for you depends on what sort of stuff you usually do at a con, how dense the area around the convention is, and what extra amenities the hotel you're looking at offers. You might want to make a spreadsheet to compare costs if you're on a tight budget.

Yup. There's videos on youtube of people showing their design process -- specifically for sites like Spoonflower. You just need an understanding of how to repeat a pattern and cutting/sewing layouts in order to make them.

>What if it's just at the hems and not the bodice?
If it's just at the hems it'd probably be easier to make a trim, but if it must be on the print then the design is likely only printed on 1 piece of fabric at the bottom. Again, this would make much more sense with a visual so check Youtube.

>When you're measuring armscyes, how deep do you go?
Depends on the type of bodice and sleeves you want, no? A dropped sleeve will have armseyes that are longer and lower. A cap sleeve has a tight and close one. A raglan or baggy sleeve with have something in the middle. Especially with women's shirts, there's a "Standard t-shirt" fit and a "fitted" tee that fit differently to one's body. For a jacket, I'd imagine you'd air on the baggier side. Take a look at some garments you already own and try to identify the differences -- that will help.

>How much additional length do you add to your body measurements when you're making a jacket that's meant as an outer layer vs making something that's meant to stay close to the body?
You're talking about a garment's "ease" or the amount of inches added to your body's measurements to allow for movement so that you're not making a fabric prison for your limbs. I don't want to be the blind leading the blind, so I'm gonna link an article rather than talking about it myself: http://isntthatsew.org/ease/

I was mostly considering between hotel vs an AirBnB for the chilling with other congoers and room party aspect but I think you cleared it up pretty well. Ended up getting a solo reservation at a "sponsored" hotel, but thru Expedia rather than the con website because the prices + cancellation policy was MUCH better. Looking forward to the event!

So in that shuichi from DRv3 example, I bought an oversized suit, and basically appended and removed pieces from it until it looked similar to what I wanted it. You'll want a bunch of reference images of the character, and pictures of other cosplayers that cosplayed the character. One of THE hardest things to get right when making cosplays is fabric choice; it can get very difficult trying to gauge how thick/thin, how stretchy, how dark, how shiny a fabric should be, especially if it's something unique and not easily identifiable (ie. a sweater in an anime has an easy real life parallel; something like Archer from F/SN's outfit? Way more leniency in what it could be). This is why seeing what other people have made, and how it looks, is worth the time.

You'll learn very quickly there's a "proper" way to make garments (that is nearly universal and that every seamster/seamstress will agree on) and many different janky ways. I'm talking linings, finishing seams properly, etc. For cosplays, you will NOT need to do any of these most of the time, because all you are doing is imitating the look for the outfit (from the outside). The internals will not matter (unless they compromise the external look; ie. a character with a coat with a visible lining).

Also, you can buy patterns and go off of them to learn garment construction (which is actually useful) and such, but guy patterns are 99% garbage (speaking as a guy) and annoying as shit. It's like 400 variations of a button down shirt. They'll also never fit properly, they're always oversized (or, I guess, if it's meant for Americans...). BUT, as an aid to visualize how garments are put together, very very useful. After enough of these, you will be able to "dissect" an outfit by looking at it and imagining where it's seams are, and get a better understanding of how something could be constructed. Then, it's off to prototype city.

Is it true that if sewing is too difficult with certain fabrics it's not because of the machine, but because you don't have enough different needles?
I keep getting different answers when watching videos about this and initially i was taught that having 2 needle types was enough, not sure now

>> No.10610342

>>10610337
The size and other aspects of a needle can be some of it but it really depends on your specific situation.

Thick leather for example is one that you really want a strong machine for, while with lighter fabrics the issues tend to be related to thread tension and needing a smaller needle, trouble with knits tends to be the need of a ballpoint needle, the right zigzag stitch, or an overlocker/serger.

It all reallllly varies and depends on what problem you are getting, like puckering, thread breaking, loose sitches, etc. Sewing isn't overall a complicated task, and most difficulties even with fabrics you're familiar with will just be solved by basic troubleshooting in the moment and deciding what to do from there.

>> No.10610347

>>10610342
Thank you anon. The heaviest fabric i tried working with was denim, the issue is mainly with lighter fabrics puckering, the thread coming out weirdly loose sometimes and the bobbin yhread becoming all tangled and swallowing my fabric up. This should be tension, right?
I got gifted this simple machine and am just starting with some mockups in cheap fabric like satin, so i still don't know much about what is an issue of human error, machine or needle, just that something goes wrong everytime kek

>> No.10610354

>>10610347
Puckering with thin fabric could be related to tension, having threaded the machine improperly (which usually falls under tension), having a needle that is too big or not sharp enough, etc.

It may be helpful to try googling some troubleshooting tips and working through those one by one. My go-to problem solver when stuff is messing up is to rethread the top and bobbin of my machine before adjusting anything, and then checking tension next if that doesn't fix it. Then the other stuff like needle size or type and all.

Tension is usually the biggest issue with fabrics (and also the cheapest and quickest to fix) so that would be the first to check. Another related one, as someone else said, is incorrect threading (so just rethread it lol). The second biggest is incorrect needle type (you generally just need a bunch of ballpoint/stretch/jersey needles for knits and universals for wovens) and you'll be gucci. The other very, very, very useful thing to buy is a walking foot, which basically helps with feeding the fabric, and is necessary for sewing anything stretch or tricky. It's SO good, that I just keep it on 24/7, because it just works. Before I got one sewing anything slightly stretchy was a nightmare, now I'm just cruisin.

How soon is too soon to prepare a wig for a cosplay? I'm styling a wig for the first time and I'm worried the freeze spray I'm putting in will degrade and hairs will start poking out if I do it too early. I'm following a tutorial to essentially create pulled back hair like in pic related and it will be steamed into place, have freeze spray applied and then glued to some small pvc pipe. The actual pony tail will be styled into more of a heavily teased mess (going for a samurai look) so I'm wondering if that will lose its shape too.

>> No.10611977

>>10611742
I think the bigger factor in this equation is storage. If you style the wig like a month in advance, but shove it in a bag then yes it's going to deteriorate the style; but, if you have the space to place the wig on a head and perhaps in a box (to keep dust off of it) then you could realistically keep it for however long you want. Regardless, you're going to need to touch it up a day or two before the con. That's just standard with any wig though

>I'm worried the freeze spray I'm putting in will degrade
I've never heard of this happening. Popular wig stylists like Cowbutt Crunchies have their extreme styled wigs on display and there doesn't seem to be any issue in their upkeep other than retouching freeze spray. There isn't like whitening or flaking bits or something like that.

>hairs will start poking
I hate to tell you, but flyaways are always going to happen. Even if you trim them down. That's just reality. Now if you're worried about the updo unravelling, that has more to do with the way you style and secure it than time. I don't know what the best method for that is, but if you're following Kinpatsu's tutorial then use whatever advice she gives -- it'll likely be the best since she does updo styles often.

Oh ok cool, yeah that was my biggest concern. I didn't want to have to spend a bunch of time combing out flaky bits or anything. The got2b freeze spray seems to be the go to recommendations so I wasn't sure if it was if there was a time limit of sorts. But yeah it will be stored with plenty of space and I'm not worried if I have to do any touch ups the day before. Anyway thanks anon

Can I get some help with the xianyu listing? I've run it through translate and it looks like the seller wants to trade it for something else? I'm not sure if I'm interpreting it right >https://market.m.taobao.com/app/idleFish-F2e/widle-taobao-rax/page-detail?wh_weex=true&wx_navbar_transparent=true&id=612827860428&ut_sk=1.YDLZM%252BLviMQDAPXDAsM0FQEc_21407387_1620950501327.Copy.detail.612827860428.3789978969&forceFlush=1

I feel so stupid. I just got a kumya (who wants to be a strawberry) and... wtf is this. Her belly is totally empty and folds and looks like a pussy. She can't sit up at all. I thought I could store things in her head/body and it would be filled up?

I'm trying out Japan's Mercari through buyee for the first time. If you buy multiple items from one seller, does the seller automatically consolidate the package for Buyee or do you have to request it somehow? And if you do, how do you do that? Do you still pay for Buyee's consolidation once it reaches the warehouse?

Can anyone give me an easy instruction on how to use taobao and what shopping services are good? My attention span isn't big enough for guides
