Anyone else seeing a problem with all these cosplayers using the BLM protests for clout?

Seen a few in my area running to protests with professional photographers pretending to have found cellphone shots of them at protests, despite many to be high res pics, well composited photos. Seen Spider-Men, Batmen, Captain America cosplayers, as well as some Resident Evil that was trying to set up a group shoot on Facebook.

I'm just finding these to be in bad taste.

I think it depends on the intention. If they're going to support the cause in costume, then go right ahead. If they're going just for cool photos then I think it's in poor taste. Post more if you have more, I haven't seen this.

Cosplay is a female-centric hobby and white females seem to really enjoy caping for black men, so I'm guessing it's common. Doesn't make it any less trashy though.

>> No.10410939

It depends on the costume I suppose. Characters like Miles were a statement (and still receive criticism for being “too progressive/pandering”) and their origins and character arcs represent what the BLM movement is fighting for. Same goes for Cap, and Superman would probably also fall along the lines of “person who wants equality and is willing to fight the gov to achieve it”. Characters like Batman or Iron Man don’t exactly fit because their main story arcs have nothing to do with the movement

>> No.10410948

It’s honestly just as gross as influensters doing this same shit. I could maybe understand dressing in a superhero costume without any other reason than to be out sending a message like “protesters are heroes, protesting will save lives” kind of thing but even then I feel it’s best just not to. There’s a time and place and to me protests are a serious matter that shouldn’t involve your irrelevant hobby. I’d feel differently if it were black superhero cosplays out there spreading the message though but white cosplayers doing it just feels in bad taste.

Depends on whether or not you're black.

The "spec ops new black panthers" group are apparently just actors with no history of activism pretty much doing the equivalent of airsoft LARPing but that didn't stop people from rimming their buttholes for days.

But Cosplay-Twitter wants to cancel any white person that does a photoshoot near or around the riots/protests because something something "exploitation"

It's all so stupid.

>> No.10411168

From my point of view, it is valid if the character cosplayed helps the 'movement' in a way. A pretty blatant example to help visualize this: a stormtrooper with a sign saying 'I am a villain and even I agree that BLM', or something like that.

The writer Brian Michael Bendis who created Miles Morales with his adopted children. They are the reason he decided to create a Black Latino Spider-man. He supports BLM but feel free to check his Twitter. 98% of current comic writers support BLM and many are raising money for BLM as I wrote this. He certainly wants you to dress up like Miles if you go out to protest. And you should.

To say that he would have a problem with the headline photo of this topic is idiotic and wrong. Superheros were always liberal creations. Most Golden Age writers as Stan Lee (co-creator of Black Panther) were Jewish for example. Last week´s issue of Batman by Warren Ellis literally says ”Batman is woke” and happens to feature shocking parallels to BLM. Even The Punisher hates corrupt cops. Think about that and his creator Gerry Conway want his skull to be reclaimed by BLM as it is currently being misused by the US police and military. You read that right. The creator of the Punisher wants to put on a black skull when you go out to protest. He supports cosplay at protest.

Notice how the Punisher himself dislikes The Punisher. Him being "toxic" is kinda the point.
The Punisher says to the cops outright that he willing to kill them as they revealed their twisted view on policing in that 2019 comic.

Frank further never hated black people. He was even pulled over by cops when he was turned black by a rogue surgeon in the 90s. Oh the 90s. That´s a real comic arc! He canonically know the oppression of black Americans by the police and his Vietnam unit had multiple back soldiers.

4chan is full of racists but here it goes -

These characters that they are cosplaying literally fight against brutality and hateful people in every story arc. They are symbols of unity, compassion, and solidarity in the face of oppression and violence.

That's why cosplayers like Spider-man and cops like The Punisher, even if Punisher and his creators don't like them back.

The very sentiment that you think cosplayers, whose faces are fucking hidden, are going to protests for clout, is an indication that your opinion of protests is rooted in unhealthy cynicism or outright animosity from the get-go.

No. They are not protesting "for clout". If they were clout-seekers, they'd be posting it all with merch links in the bio. Instead, the only cosplayers I saw that attended protests were sharing (blech) petition links, donation drives, charitable organization information, and information on how to stay informed.

The problem with putting a Punisher skull onto a police vehicle is because the Punisher exists as a vigilante who commits atrocities because of his status as a vigilante. He literally constantly wades between illegal acts because the police, who should be virtuous enough to never simply ignore the law, will never be able to mow down confirmed murderers and rapists at a moment's notice because they are tied up with legal red tape. Frank Castle, on the other hand, is a horrible human who knows he's a horrible human who simply vents his violent tendencies and hatred for other horrible people onto the worst criminals and monsters he can find. Police should literally never aspire to be like Frank Castle, nor should they advertise themselves as adjacent to Frank Castle, as it implies they act outside of the law and kill people because nobody is there to punish criminals and wrongdoers who slip outside of the reach of legal repercussion. If the police are showing themselves to be violent mad dogs who ignore the law whenever it suits them and actively attack and kill members of the public as Judge, Jury, and Executioner, Frank Castle would ABSOLUTELY hate them, and in his own universe, he would almost assuredly kill them too.
