I'm in the process of making my first cosplay and I'm building Guts' raider sword from PVC and eva foam. I'm planning on using a heat gun and clamps to flatten the pvc (other than the handle) and I'm going to cut out a groove in the eva foam for the flattened PVC to sit in. I'm worried about the strength of the pvc though, the entire length of the sword is 80' and I'm afraid itll bend, especially with the eva foam weighing down the flattened part. It's not a very bulky sword, but it is long. Am I going to be alright, or should I try a different method?

>> No.10374377

>>10374339
PVC is pretty strong, and foam weighs barely anything, so it may not be super rigid but it'll have a bit of flop at worst. Getting it that flat while keeping it straight could be tricky though. A wood core would be a good alternative.

>> No.10374400

>>10374377
I'm not sure how to do a wood core though, even though that sounds nice. The blade itself isnt thick enough to hide a dowel rod that size, so I'm not sure where I would hide it.

Why would it be tricky to keep straight?

Not help but does anyone else get disproportionately anxious with a showing machine? Like when thread gets bungled up. Or something with the bobbin compartment, and I just want to implode. Nothing else does this to me.

>>10374561
I thought you were worried about the machine imploding. Thread nests are very, very common even for experienced seamstresses. It's just like a computer, it gets bungled up sometimes. Rethreading your machine is like turning the computer off and on again. Maybe you have some emotions tied to the project you're working on or feelings about your skill/ability that are being triggered by this?

Try a threaded steel rod, or two of them connected together, for your core. Steel rods are thin and very strong, and you can check out different thicknesses/lengths at your local hardware store.

>> No.10374675

>>10374644
How do I get it flat enough to fit in between the two things of foam though? The foam is around an inch thick, so I'm probably going to cut a half inch divot in both sides to create a one inch gap for the rod when I'm done
Are these rods going to be thin enough to fit in there? If they are, wouldnt that make it way too small for the actual handle at the base?

>> No.10374676

>>10374675
I just looked up a threaded steel rod, and while I like how thin and solid it looks, would anyone even be selling an 80' long steel rod? Even if they did, how am I supposed to use the rod in conjunction with the foam? The appeal of the PVC is that I can flatten one end and have the other remain the same width, I cant do that with this.
If any of these questions seem really dumb, you can just chalk it up to inexperience on my part.

You are not going to be able to make a rider suit for your first cosplay. Assuming you have basic sewing and crafting skills, you are still looking at making a whole body suit and then covering half of your body in armor, along with making a helmet that requires translucent plastic. It would take someone who knows what they're doing weeks or months to make this, and it would cost hundreds of dollars in materials.

More of a meta-question about the board, and I've only ever dropped in to glance at /cgl/ very briefly in the past so forgive me if this is not a good place to ask: I've recently become heavily interested in real-life historical fashion and sartorial techniques. Is this a good board to discuss and learn about such things? My initial impression is that this board more discusses anime cons and more contemporary subcultures.

Affix combs on the inside. Then backcomb the hair on that side. Assuming this will be made of lightweight materials it won't move. You could also try braiding a portion of hair to put the combs through. If you are sensitive to tension on your scalp both could cause headaches.

What would the best material to use for the cape/jacket a black twill or cotton? Should I put a wire in the base so it can hold shape or is it not worth it?

>> No.10378249

>>10378169
Twill is a weave and cotton is a fiber so twill can be cotton but I'll assume you mean broadcloth or bedsheet weight cotton. Twill is definitely the better option, broadcloth will look cheap as a coat/cape. I don't think wire in the edge will be possible here, with the size of the coat, the lining and the props inside, getting it to keep a shape would require a wire way stiffer than what is available, and probably a harness to hold it up. Getting an assistant/handler/friend to flip the cape for photos will get you a better effect.

I bought a maid outfit for woman and the zipper on the back doesn't fully close, was wondering if I could shrink into it or need to buy XXL
XL: Bust 98 cm, waist 85 cm, shoulder width 42 cm, skirt length 90 cm.

I'm male 180cm, 80kg/5'9 / 176 with broad shoulders. I could get away with wearing male M and on some stuff S when I was like 62kg.
Now at most I can only comfortably wear L.
I've compared the outfit with my old shirts and it seems to be just a little smaller around the bust. I'm not sure if losing weight is going to let me close the zipper on the back fully. And it's too long a process to where I won't be able to return it if it doesn't.

In the pic at the bottom lies an L sized T-shirt with ontop of it an M and ontop of that the maid outfit and another M

Will I be able to wear this if I go twink mode or should I return it and get a bigger size?

>> No.10378485

>>10378344
Gotta be honest chief, I can't make sense of what you've written here. I will tell you this though, you can only feasibly shrink 1-3 inches to fit into a garment. Anything more than that and you should buy a new garment. Letter sizes do not matter one bit. They're not consistent like Men's sizing, they're pretty much irrelevant in women's sizing. Always go by your measurements in the individual garment's size chart. Especially if you're buying from Asian sellers. Even then, I'd suggest going 1 size up since you're a male or at the very least make sure there's 1-5 inches of room in each measurement.

Woah that clears it up pretty well, thanks
Basically I was asking if the maid outfit would be comparable to an M sized T-shirt and if I could use that as a reference for how it would fit when I got smaller. My plan was to lay them over each other and to see if they have the same measurements.
I don't really know how clothing sizes work though so thanks for clearing that up. Guess I'll return this and get a bigger size

Unfortunately they're not comprable. Your shirt is made of a stretchy material which means that it has that 1-5 inches of room, so it's not a good judge of size. The only way you're going to get a proper size is by taking a flexible measuring tape and taking your measurements. Take them two times at least to ensure you took them right and watch a video. It's harder than you think to get those right.
I think returning it is the right decision though.

I’m planning a Johnny Joestar cosplay, but with a purple/white/black color scheme, because I found out I look horrible in blue lipstick compared to purple lipstick. Making the outfit is pretty straight forwards except for the pants. Anyone got any ideas about what to do for these? They’re supposed to be some kind of comfy pants, not jeans. I was thinking about getting white pants, putting tape stars over them, then going to town with purple spray dye, hopefully revealing white stars when the tape stars are pulled off, but I’m worried about the dye bleeding under the tape and fucking it up. Should I just get purple joggers or something and sew/glue some kind of fabric stars to them instead?

>> No.10381717

>>10381709
Make the stars out of fabric or use iron-in vinyl, and sew them down. Your plan with taping stars down will leave you with a splotchy, uneven finish on the pants, and the dye will bleed under the stars since you’re not putting wax or some other dye resistant material on the fabric.

>> No.10381719

>>10381709
Get purple joggers and paint on the stars with white fabric paint. Appliqueing them on to a premade garment would be a bitch. Make sure you put something like cardboard in the legs of the pants while painting to stop the back and front from sticking to each other/paint from bleeding.

A couple follow-up questions, where can I get soft (not dimensional/puffy) fabric paint, and last time I tried painting white on a dark fabric surface with a white paint pen that allegedly works on fabric, it didn’t work, so any tips for getting white to actually show up clearly on the fabric?

thanks for actually using the help thread anon. i think the easiest way to do it would be to make a heart stencil and use facepaint + makeup sealing spray. the cheapo way to do this would be to use pink lipstick and hairspray, but a single pan of cream facepaint and Ben Nye sealing spray is not going to run you too much imo and stay on much better. as for the stencil material, you can get sheets of mylar and similar things at craft stores, or you could use masking tape that you've stuck to itself.

I'd personally go with a lace front, especially since affordable lace fronts are so easily available on ebay/aliexpress/amazon nowadays. From the ready-made character wigs you can see that a wavy bob seems like good shape, so you could just mod a bob-length lace front to look similar. Cosplay n00b here. How much do you need in order to start making outfits? I really like making things on my own but I have no idea how much money I'd need to put into getting the materials for making my own outfits. Or rather, what are general tools I'd need to make my own outfits? Are bodyforms strictly necessary?

>> No.10388114

>>10388099
A dress form isn't necessary for a beginner. You can measure yourself and buy commercial patterns in your size, and alter them. The most essential tools are probably a sewing machine, fabric scissors, an iron + ironing board, pins, a seam ripper, and measuring tape. Of those, the sewing machine is the most expensive, ~$100-$150 for a simple mechanical one. There are a lot of videos on Youtube on how to get started sewing.

It can vary. My first costume cost me $80 head to toe (shoes, outfit, wig, makeup, accessories, supplies) while other outfits have cost me $40-50. As a beginner, you are making an investment on these tools to start out with but you won't need to factor them into your costs for future projects. I like to start every project by a breakdown.
>I start by looking at reference photos and then draw a crude sketch so I can label every piece of the costume. Don't forget things like false lashes, lipstick, undergarments, wig caps, etc. Go from head to toe when you're listing off. I like to visualize myself getting dressed on the day of the con so that I don't forget something like spanx or including an attachment or whatever.
>Then I ask myself, what am I making or buying? It's totally okay to mix and match by the way! There's this idea that if you don't make every single piece that's on your body then it's not cosplay. Totally untrue! Even the big names mix and match. Do what you gotta do.
>Anywho, for the pieces I'm making, I then make lists with all of the tools and materials I need (scissors, sewing pattern, fabrics, etc.). Then I take a look at the tools and materials I have at home, cross them off the list, and then begin searching for the best deals for what I have left to buy.
>Start knocking out each piece of the costume in an order that makes sense to you.

Don't forget your best resource: Youtube! There is a tutorial for everything, especially what tools beginners really need: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g40_yWglPCk&t=145s

Maybe you could use liquid latex and a material that looks close enough to moss? I want to say cotton balls, but with liquid latex applied they wouldn't retain their fluffy shape. That's a tough question anon. Maybe you could experiment with some diffierent materials and see what works? I agree with the other anons that it looks like wearing it will be hot. This might be a tricky project and probably pretty expensive, but here's a few options I found.

There are a few different kinds of "fake grass fabrics" on Aliexpress (and probably other sites like it). They are expensive and sold in small quantities tho, and idk how they would actually be suitable for sewing a bodysuit like that. Here's a few links anyway:
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32853659489.html
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/33004413572.html

Other than that, faux rabbit fur would probably be a more affordable option. The fur is short and can be cut/shaven even shorter. Idk if you could airbrush it to have more detail or maybe make it messier somehow to have a moss/grass-like texture. Or maybe add a some small fake plants here and there.
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4000010396798.html

Any option is probably going to be pretty uncomfortable and hot to wear. Good luck anon, King Protea is a cutie.

I didn't really take Cosplay all too seriously in a sense that I make it all on my own but don't just buy costumes off the internet. Instead I just looked in my closet and tried to match the character the best I can with what I had, helps to mostly be dressing as Tokusatsu characters so the outfits had to be feasible and presentable IRL, but I guess that's not a costume and well, an outfit.

With that out the way I want to start trying proper cosplay. I wanted to start with DFMD's Bandit since I liked how he played and I get an idea of how to do him. The yellow arm isnt really too much of a problem because it has a smaller form that isnt pictured here so I was gonna make that onto an arm guard and wear a sleeve under it, though I'm not sure if I could cut it up a little to match the art and still have the sleeve fit.
I'm not sure how to do the cloak and the horns. The gloves I was just gonna attach buckles onto fingerless gloves I already have and those shirt belts I was gonna make the ring part and put them onto luggage straps. I could make the horns but I just don't know how to get them onto my head. It's the cloak is where I dunno where to start. I don't have a sewing machine so I'm looking if I could find something close enough and find a way to make it work.

> though I'm not sure if I could cut it up a little to match the art and still have the sleeve fit.
You would have to adhere it to your skin or a skin-colored mesh sleeve. So your options are skin-safe glue or sewing. It won't fall off of you if you don't.
>I'm not sure how to do the cloak and the horns.
There's plenty of good tutorials out there, especially from the Homestuck community (the horns from the character Eridan Ampora would suit this costume well) so take a look at your options first and then we can help you decide which is best for your project.
> but I just don't know how to get them onto my head
Again, there's several forms of attachment that will depend on how you make the horns in the first place. Essentially you can attach them to a headband or feed them through your wig and create a X out of worbla for them to screw onto.
> I don't have a sewing machine so I'm looking if I could find something close enough and find a way to make it work.
Hem tape is a good and clean replacement for sewing, but of course the drawback is that sewing is sturdier and the hem tape is only semipermanent. It will hold fine, even in the wash, but it can get loose in spots of high activity after several wears, so just keep that in mind.

Is there any special way to tease the shit out of a wig? I keep seeing this one cosplayer who's able to get an incredible amount of body from their wigs by teasing (although the wig ends up looking fried to hell afterwards.) I can't even seem to get a quarter of that volume when I'm teasing-- I don't want to go quite as far with it as they do, but what's the secret? Do I just tease again and again and again, or apply hairspray and tease in a certain order? or is there some other method to achieve this insane amount of body?

>> No.10391211

>>10391206
Are you using an actual teasing brush or just a regular wig brush? From experience, using a wig brush adds some volume but also tangles the hair when backcombing instead if making it really textured. If you are using a teasing brush, you could also try crimping lower layers of the wig for more volume. You can kind of see it in this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZH2KK_YFwNc.. Just be sure not to overcrimp the wig or else the crimping will show through the top layers of fiber.

Like the other anon said, make sure you're using the right tools. You want Got2B freeze spray specifically because it works well with synthetic fibers and gets gravity defying hold. Spray lightly (do not soak the fibers) at the root. Blast your hair dryer on cool until dry. You need a strong base to build upon. Then, start repeating this cycle as you go up the strand of hair until you achieve the body you desire. Personally, I like to keep the top and/or body layer unteased for a clean look but apparently you can achieve more body by doing it to the whole wig and then brushing the top layer out.

I'm probably too old for this movie but I really love this character. What's the best way to color my face/body this grey/purple color? I'd prefer kryolan products if possible. For the pointy ears, I was going to use a drop of liquid latex and pinch my ear to be pointed temporarily. I dye my hair regularly so It will be dyed red. I'm still trying to figure out a way to fake a mohawk. If I get bored enough in this quarantine I might just shave it desu. I've never done it before but I'd like to order some pink contact lenses in my prescription. Do I need any info besides my regular eyeglasses prescription? Also, I basically have all of her clothes already.

Making armor that detailed would be a challenge even for a seasoned armor-maker. If you've never cosplayed anything it's probably way out of league.

You can try making your own armor tho, there are plenty of tutorials online on how to craft them. Worbla, foam or cardboard are the most used materials. You're gonna have to make your own armor patterns since I doubt ready patterns for that exact costume exist anywhere.

You can also commission someone to make the costume for you, but considering the amount of detail you'd probably have to spend thousands of bucks. You can find artists who do commissions on social media such as your local cosplay groups.

don't take this the wrong way, but the colour looks close to some of the Homestuck trolls, so maybe you could use instructions for those as inspiration? a sheer coat of that kind gray looks like it'd do the trick
pointy ears are better done with ear tips, Aradani has been the market leader for ages iirc and you can get unpainted tips that you can cover with the same paint.
for the mohawk, faking those is hard and wigs tend to suck - maybe a really weird bald cap trick could work, but that's all I can come up with.
for contact lenses you need to know your base curve, so definitely go and get that measured before you buy any contacts online - they'll do it at any decent optometrist or glasses shop, sometimes for free if you buy contacts from them

>> No.10399047

you eyeglass prescription is not the same as contacts. you could try and guess of course but it's not advised. for example my glasses are -12 now but I wear -10 in contact lenses. for cosplay i disregard the base curve as long as its within .2 since you don't wear them long term but it will cause discomfort

this isn't correct. contacts and glasses are generally about the same now. contacts prescriptions used to need to be adjusted since they sit directly on the eyes rather than on your nose, but modern brands convert for distance so the numbers will match up. the only difference is that glasses can be as specific as 2 decimal points where contacts more generic so they only go 1 decimal point and are rounded to the nearest .5 anyway.
also are you sure your prescription is that high? -12 is very high. it could be why your prescription is different, you may need to use a lenses brand that goes higher than most so they don't convert for distance

>> No.10399068

>>10399065
sadly I am super sure my prescription is that high. I wear contacts full time. Perhaps it is a consequence of having a really high prescription, but it makes buying cosplay lenses really annoying as the brands that carry up to 10 are limited. Hey seagulls, need some hairstyling advice. I have long staightish hair and I want to do it in a zeppelin-pomp for cosplay and for occasional fun. Problem is that there seems to be no online resources on how to do it. All i get are faggy fade-half pomps that dont stick out at all.

How do i support hair that goes past my face? It seems like to support it i would need some sort of hidden wire frame or somesuch unless i kill my hair so hard with product that it literally cant move at all. Anyone have experience with this?

You do have to have a specific haircut to get a good pomp (many vintage hairstyles require a specific haircut to get the style).

Looking up tutorials for similar hairstyles like the elephant trunk and then modifying them to be a pomp may be useful as well.

Hello CGL. I'm currently trying to make a temari (a Japanese cloth/ yarn ball with thread emboidery/stiches making up the art on the balls) and have run into a problem. I'm trying to make it as authentic as I can and the red ribbon with the flower on it is proving to be harder then I expected. I can't find anything like it on any temari online and a test version I made out of satin ribbon looked like a cheap package topper. Does anyone know the name of this decoration? Your foundation and concealer look good! Are you trying to make your brows completely "disappear" or just recolor them? If you want to completely change the shape and make them "disappear" then I'd recommend adding a layer two or more of glue and powder. If you just want to change the color, I'd recommend using a white wax pencil like NYX's jumbo eye pencil in Milk (it's matte white, no glitter unlike Cottage Cheese) and just use a spoolie to coat your brow hairs completely. Then you can just take an eyeshadow in your desired shade and apply for more natural looking brows (albeit the crazy color of course)

Also, it's 1 part rubbing alcohol to 1 part copic or sharpie, not water. If you were using acrylic paint, you would dilute it in 1 part water. Sorry, that got mixed up in my brain. Hi CGL. I'm trying to create the tiara/headpiece in the bottom image and have run into a problem. To get a metallic finish on the tiara I've considered vinyl wrapping, painting with Angelus leather paint, and spray painting with Krylon (after sanding and priming the foam). My issue is that the seams will be really apparent like in the upper left photo. Does anyone have any tips on how to attain a seamless finish on something that's flexible and not straight?

You can trim it down/sand it before priming and painting. In modeling there is this stuff we use to fill in gaps called "green stuff" or milliput. I can't see why it wouldn't. However, it's not faux fur but sherpa/wool. Fur is hair-like / single-strands sticking straight up whereas sherpa/wool is piles of woven strands. You'll really need to saturate the fibers with alcohol and/or water to really get the color in there. Do a patch test on an interior part of the wool/sherpa that won't be seen to test its efficacy.

I was invited by a tight group of friends to attend a local hentai convention. When I was younger I always dreamed of such an event reaching my city, but well better late than never. So I'd kinda like to get into the spirit and cosplay, problem is even though I've watched a ton of hentai, I don't remember many males that could be recognized in cosplay besides Rance, the ones I could remember are too plain to be noticed.

Any ideas for hentai male cosplays? I guess it could be some sort of dick monster as well, I'm somewhat starting to get into silicon sculpting and I could try some home made props, as long as I can still move and dance, not become a giant Mara charriot that needs assitance to get by. I'm just not confident enough in my body to go shirtless, but I'm open to any suggestions and appreciate you taking the time to read this.

And well, not I don't want to go as Rance, as I believe that's probably going to be the most prominent male cosplay besides the average school girls or generic maids.

I also feel like the main bad guy from Kuroinu Kedakaki Seijo wa Hakudaku ni Somaru would be recognizable, since Kuroinu has a cult reputation.
