I love the photo. It's a creative shot. She's very pretty, but the coordinate is undeniably flawed. Imagine if she was just standing and taking a mirror selfie. The pink at the top doesn't work. It's not cohesive and a white or black blouse would be better. She has no accessories. That doesn't make a coord ita, but she even lacks a hairbow. The socks don't match the blouse, obviously. They aren't terrible but lace OTKs would be better. The shoes clash with the style. She's got a sweet blouse, old school goth velveteen skirt, witch striped ebay socks, and instagram/western gothic shoes. No accessories or anything on top of it. This honestly feels sloppy. I think she's new and doesn't own very much, so my advice is to buy more versatile pieces and accessories.

Maybe when she started 40 years ago, not now. There’s nothing punk about high end, mass-produced fashion. People into jfashion think punk is just a couple safety pins and some plaid. Not a single punk I know wears those things. It’s as bad as the itas in BSOLF thinking every square dance dress or grandma’s 80s Laura Ashley dress is loliable. You look just as ridiculous to most people into punk or rock music as those little sisters to do most decent lolitas

Sex Pistols, Vivienne Westwood, and Malcolm McLaren invented the British punk look and sound as we know it today. Punk has evolved since then, but to deny its roots makes you the ill-informed poseur. Punk is fashion, music, and a subculture. Punk music and fashion have been nothing more than commercialized fashion statements since their inceptions. Punks have all sorts of political beliefs and "the punk lifestyle" can hardly fit under a single umbrella. High school druggies who dress in plaid and listen to DKs are punks. 20 something y.o vegan jackoffs in a band are punks. 40 y.o. boomers who remember the good ol' days, wear tshirts and jeans, and hate the pigs are also punks. But the reality is the vast majority of us don't consider our style to be punk and will never use that term when explaining it to others. Realistically, that's kind of all that matters since there's no other real way to classify anything subjectively in art or fashion. How new are you to this fashion? A counter culture just rebels against the norm, in this case, beauty standards. Lolita is a rebellious counter culture fashion at it's roots, this death of the author shit is just tiring. You seem to be stuck in some bubble where counter culture has to be some edgy, dark style. Using religious imagery for fashion, especially when you have prints of jesus or saints and the like, is pretty edgy to begin with. I'd even argue that sweet lolita is almost more counter culture because it focuses on shunning ideals of "maturity" and focuses on youth. Even now, there is still a lot of focus, both in Japan and the west regarding how Lolita defies beauty standards set by men and how empowering that is.

A lot of it doesn't though, at least not for sweet and classic. It's a hyperfeminine fashion emphasizing your small waist and you typically wear feminine and cute makeup to look conventionally pretty. A lot of men and women find it conventionally cute or even (ugh) sexy. People in other fashion subcultures don't have to put up with as many unwanted sexual advances as we do. I suppose the religious imagery can depend on if you yourself are religious, but I would say it definitely reveres the imagery more than ridiculing it.

>>10368610
That's just one aspect of this style though. On the other hand you have lifestyle lolitas trying to act like the patriarchal ideal of a woman who drinks tea, bakes, sews, appears modest but pretty, and looks youthful.

To both of you, I do see both sides of it so you can stop with the unnecessary condescension. I can't personally make up my mind so I'm playing devil's advocate. Obviously, every time I wear lolita people stare or sometimes are dicks to me just because I'm dressed differently, so I get firsthand why that would be considered rebellious and counterculture. Especially in Japan where individualism is frowned upon. But my inner radfem is also aware of the stereotypes this perpetuates about femininity and what "being a lolita" means to lifestylers. Too many normies look at our fashion and often immediately think we're dressing as a fetish for men.

no, you're just factually wrong and whining about being called out. your definition is wrong, get over it. if you think that lolita of any style embodies modern beauty standards then i'd love to know where you live! it's also pathetic that you think a few people fetishizing something makes it overtly sexual. it's also weird that you assume gothic lolitas (who arguably appear more mainstream) are somehow rebelling more.

I'm not and have no reason to lie about that but if you want to feel like you're fighting valiantly for a cause then you can continue to believe this.

Certain aspects of it absolutely embody modern beauty standards (makeup, plenty of hairstyles, etc), but yes obviously almost all the clothing does not. Luckily, that's not what I said.

The biggest difference to me is that I didn't join lolita to be counterculture and subversive unlike people who dress gothic or punk, so yes the attitude feels extremely dissimilar. Appearing weird to normies is a symptom of my choosing the fashion, not the cause. I don't feel like I'm sticking it to the man every time I wear lolita, far from it. I feel like an even easier target, especially for sexual harassment.

Also, beauty standards and patriarchal standards are not the same thing. Lifestyle lolitas practically act like Stepford Wives themselves, with their baking and sewing and being dainty. They're expecations that people still push on women today.

This has been discussed again and again and again. Unless you speak Japanese you can sit the fuck down.

I'm not saying obesity isn't a problem in the USA because damn it is, but that doesn't mean that every non-Asian who isn't short and rail-thin is fat. Think about how many black girls couldn't fit in lolita for the life of them, but are tall, lean and athletic. Lolita embraces femininity as rebellion instead of rejecting it. It’s intentionally turning the girlyness up to 11 to make the statement that femininity is not lesser than masculinity. Lifestylers don’t give up things they love to be more lolita, they just open themselves up to new hobbies that are considered traditionally feminine like sewing or baking, both of which are really fun and creative. For me wearing lolita has the same idgaf feeling as telling a guy I hate sports on a first date, I’m girly as hell and I don’t care if men like or dislike it. It may not be the type of rebellion that resonates with you the most but it absolutely is anti patriarchal.
