Thanks! I had a sneaking suspicion that it would. I've seen an equal amount of cosplayers choose a shiny fabric and others go with a plain cotton type so I was just straight up confused. The canon references aren't much help desu. I'll definitely check out your suggestions and do some flash tests.

I'm planning on cosplaying Noi from Dorohedoro and I haven't decided how I should make the base of the mask. So far the only ideas I had were to make a ski mask from pleather, or just buy a gimp mask and modify the hell out of it. Any suggestions?

If you're able to sew, buy a pattern or a morphsuit mask, add the emebellishments + seam allowance on separate paper and draw the proper seams on the real deal, then get some pleather and sew.
If not, modifying from a premade mask or commissioning it seems ideal for you.

You would carefully take apart the base jacket with a seam ripper. Make sure you keep track of what goes where. Then sew-in strips of purple and argyle/checker fabric. Try to get similar fabrics to the black sweater. I would also get rid of those silver buttons and then add the black ones that Date wears. ask if you need more clarification or need help with fabrics

Making plushies is not a very good beginner friendly project. If you think the jacket sounds difficult I think you would really struggle with making an aiba plush. I would try to find one to buy on etsy, or sculpt one out of light weight foam/clay instead. You still might need to go through a couple of rough drafts. Having aiba would be a nice touch but is not necessary. I actually think modifying that jacket is a great beginner project. I could try to walk you through it more maybe over Instagram? I don't mind since I'm a fan of the game

What's a good base for haircuts like this? I know lace fronts are usually the go to but this is like a short square cut with no bangs

For something this short to look realistic you're going to need something dense, and since the hairline isn't covered yeah you should go lacefront.

Not so much a costume thing, but I'll be cosplaying a masked character for halloween and I really want to try and replicate his voice as well as I can. Problem is that I'm a grill, and this character's voice is grovelly and deep and MAN.

I know I can use a voice changer to a point, but it can only get me so far before it sounds reaaaally unnatural. Anybody have any tips for making my voice sound more manly?

Hi seagulls. My question is, has /cgl/ or similar boards ever made you get too self-conscious over not getting a cosplay perfect? And if so, how do you get over that hump? Did lurking less help you?

I know a lot of creative people stress over perfection and I'm certainly one of them, and I'm sure that's what attracts us here where we can get satisfaction over knowing which details are right or wrong in ourselves and others.

But I feel like I've lost the fun in cosplaying and instead focusing on how other people will feel when they see my cosplay, not how I feel when I cosplay.

Can I get some tips for makeup to lighten up my skin? I'm aware of the options available for a face, but I need to apply this to my hands and feet and feel like I would run into the problem if it sweating off. Think it would be fine if I just use the same stuff I apply to my face on my other body parts for the sake of consistency or is there a better method I should consider? I'm pretty tan and need to go a few shades up.

I have a small fear of laughing it up on the "Bad Cosplay" board and seeing my picture. Especially looking back on my first handmade cosplay photos last year and realizing that how I felt in the costume and how I looked were, uh, not the same.

I don't really see a need to lurk less myself, but I've heard a lot of people talk about the benefits of internet breaks in general. I get over it by reminding myself that 1) I deserve it for poking fun at others 2) cosplay is a process, not an eternal state of perfection. I'm a beginner with sewing, makeup, and costuming. There's going to be hiccups no matter what you do. You have to embrace them as part of the process and find pride in the feats you have accomplished. Back to my example of last year's costume: sure, it looked like shit, but it was also the first garment I'd ever made. I learned so many techniques in a short span of time, it was like pic related. I was learning and doing at the same time. Despite looking shitty, it meant so much to me and so many people asked for my picture because in some small part it meant something to them. Even if I had been made fun of, other peoples' opinions can't change how proud I am for doing all that work and research myself. You have to think of failure as a stepping stone, not a bump in the road. One thing I learned from lurking the bad cosplay threads is that people were ready to defend beginner cosplayers being posted because everyone starts somewhere. So if even the people who make fun of other shitty cosplays can understand that, then so should you.

Any tips on not making my eva foam shoes explode by the end of a con? I feel like I shouldn't even bother making shoes anymore when they always seem to fall apart or need some sort of repair at the end of each day, sometimes due to other con attendees.

If you're able to with the costume, try wrapping your pieces in stretch vinyl to protect them and skip the painting steps.The end result is really nice too.
If that's not your fancy, try using stronger glue and reinforcing your seams with a thin piece of foam on the inside. IF you aren't already, make sure that your edges are smooth and filled so there isn't any uneveness for the foam to pull away from.

Then simply modify the sleeves with the puffs and ruffles, its a pretty easy modification and you can create your own pattern for the puff using the sleeve pattern. for the skirt i'd find a form-fitting aline dress pattern and modify it

I think I know what you're talking about, but a picture wouldn't hurt. When I look at it again, It looks like the drapey piece in front is connected to the dress chain/necklace thingy instead of the bodice itself.

I have some nicer bridal satin I bought for a different costume I didn't end up making, would the bodycon style for the skirt work with that or should I just get a stretch fabric? Most of the other Rheas I've seen aren't using a stretch fabric from what I can tell, but it would definitely make getting a tight fit around the hips easier.

I'm glad you asked here, I agree that it's not really a crossplay thing. You have to approach it from a character design standpoint. Take note of the identifying features and color palette from the original design and be sure to incorporate or translate them to the male version.
For example, if you were going to make a male sailor moon, her odangos and curled bangs are mandatory. Aside from dressing her in the male school uniform, it would be important to add other little elements like a bunny keychain on the school bag or something.

Study from shows that already have genderbends like Adventure Time and Sanrio High School Boys (or whatever its called). Then, once you're comfortable draft a couple of simple designs for your character and start working!

Thanks! She's not my #1 favorite but I think doing genderbent chiyoko would be tough and I wouldn't want to do crossplay chiyoko. I got the idea from a really good nico genderbend cosplay where the balance between feminine and masculine was perfect.

there's alternatives to plain rope like tubing and sewing your own tubing out of batting. you could probably just sew some tubes and fill with poly-fill if you want another option. but if you want something that actually looks like rope and not cloth like sasuske, maybe you could sew yarn on the edges to make it more rope-like. I wouldn't recommend using a beadsheet, i think that would get really heavy really quickly.

Any tips on how to securely attach velcro onto 6mm EVA foam? I've tried the adhesive stuff in the past and those have all ripped off after a couple of peels. I'm a little hesitant on glue because they will be in areas where they will most likely be in contact with sweat (bracers, thigh guards, and chest plate).

Some velcro come with adhesive backing. It's pretty sturdy but it obviously wasn't made for constantly being pulled on and off.

Get the foam hot with a heatgun and then shape it over a hard and round object while the foam is still soft. I use one of those big softballs. If you're looking for more complex angles then it helps to make darts or cut-ins into your patterns so you know where to pull/press after you heat the foam.

Hey /cgl/. I'm thinking of making a Space Marine outfit based on a pepakura template I found and using foam. The issue I'm running into is the cosplay would require me to walk on stilts. While that in itself isnt an issue, it would make the outfit disproportionate in the arms/hands.

The solution I'm thinking of is making an arm extension using a foam insert where my hand will be in the forearm with a gripping hand made from a modified pic related. Anyone have one that can verify if something like this would work?

Take light blue fabric, make your pattern, then take a diluted mix of water and bleach to fade up to where the colors change by hang dipping it.

Foam will be good for the big brown part on top but way too bendy for the main body. I'd cut the shape of the long handle part out of plywood, sand it round, and use dowels or PVC pipes for the bits that are very straight. Also consider making it come apart in places like the narrower bit in the middle of the handle and where the hooked part meets the torch looking part, for ease of transport.

Hello everyone, I'm currently trying to figure out how to create the "tiara" for the pictured character. I have never seen anything like it in IRL or in any historical paintings so I'm not sure I can use any historical or modern patterns to replicate it.

I am also trying to figure out how to get the "deathly pale" skin she has without looking like a clown. I know of long term skin whitening but have heard negative things about it, especially from Asian brands. I'm not sure this belongs on the makeup board since "deathly pale" skin seems more costumey...

Any way to avoid thinner EVA foam (<2mm) from curling when applying Plastidip and paint? Anything that has hanging portions I have to keep separate and paint them on a flat surface before pasting them onto the main part otherwise they'll end up shriveling due to the weight of the primer and paint drying.

Worbla looks like the perfect material for that. It'd be easy to shape it on a foam head but be aware that you'll need to protect the foam somehow like by wrapping it in tin foil or something before applying heat otherwise it'll burn and melt away.

You're not going to get much paler than your base skin color but you can get foundation a couple shades down if you're not already the palest shade. You'll probably have to apply it over your neck, shoulders and chest too. For the tiara, you can create the pattern with the duct tape method (get someone to help you) and make it out of something semi-rigid so it'll wrap around your head without warping or hanging in a weird way. Alternatively, you can make it out of vinyl fabric and spirit gum it to your forehead, which you probably will have to do with the choker and the top of the arm piece anyway.

White is the safer option but you'll have more work to do. For the widow's peak, I'd get a lacefront that already has that widow's peak, otherwise you'll need to do a lot of ventilating on top of dyeing. Arda Wigs has a few styles with widow's peaks.

I looked at the one you linked but I'm not sure what "density 1.8lb" refers to. I'm not familiarized with American units. It's says it's high density so I guess it's good enough. If it's a local shop buy a small sample and sand it to see how it reacts.

If you cut out the section of the wig you want to be brown, dye both parts separately and then stitch them back together, you can get more vivid colors than with sharpies, but you'll probably a) have a visible seam and b) make it smaller so I wouldn't really recommend it. Sharpie dye seems like the best option apart from getting a green lace front and ventilating brown hair into a widow's peak.

You don't have to take a sharpie directly to the fibers. The popular method is to water down dye in a spray bottle and add a bit of I think vinegar or rubbing alcohol then applying it to the fibers and brushing through to give it a natural fade. I'd suggest looking up a video for that first if you're interested. Otherwise, the only thing I can think of is Arda's wax dye creams. They're not permanent to my knowledge but you can use them to add a spot of color to a section of hair (like for Death the Kid from Soul Eater or Kaminari from BNHA)

It would be more cost, time, and frustration effective to buy the robe and then sew or iron on the embellishments. Check out WonderUnder, it's an adhesive that's made for attaching one fabric to another. If you tuck the edges in before putting the trim on, it should hid it quite nicely.

Thanks for the advice guys! This will be some good stuff to help me make this cosplay work. The problem I've really been having is whether to use cardboard or EVA foam. I'd prefer the foam since I want to use this for multiple conventions in the next few years. Is eva foam beginner friendly to use, or will it need some prior practice to make things out of?

Aspiring Mako cosplayer here I found a lot of good images and a good pattern for the coat but, I have some questions on the spikes.
What would be best to make them out of and how would I secure them to the coat? I have never used eva foam before would that be good? What thickness would I need and what would be the best way to cut the shape out of the foam?

Your best bet is to use foam unless you’re ok with using vinyl (it’ll look more like a stuffed toy than a real spike). For the large ones, you can get the premade foam cones for floral use, just be sure to cover it with worbla since floral foam is porous as fuck. The little ones can be made with 2 or 3 mm foam or foam clay if you have the sculpting skill.
To attach it, i would suggest cutting small holes into the bottom of each spike and putting one half of a sew in snap on the spike and the other half on the jacket. This allows for ease of transport and cleaning (just take the spikes off if you need to wash the jacket).

I think pink insulation foam might be better than eva foam for the organic shapes (the wood-like curvy thing), because you can sand and carve pink insulation foam more. Then for the other parts eva foam + pipes, clay for the really small details. for the spikes and cage-like thing you could use wire then wrap the wire in lightweight clay.

don't use cardboard for this cosplay like another anon suggested, it will look terrible. Since you have never cosplayed before prepare to spend a lot of time redoing stuff because your first attempt might not always look good. Since it is a rather large & daunting costume i would focus on just the helmet first and perfecting that before moving on to the rest, this will make the whole thing a lot more manageable. eva foam is pretty beginner friendly, but you might have to practice a little bit for getting clean cuts and used to the material

Leaving it in the sun will make it darker/more orange, not lighter, my elf ears got that way after a bit. I painted them with acrylics but I'm not sure that would look good on your chest. There are techniques to paint latex and silicone prosthetics, you should figure out which one yours is made of and research specific products for that material, use "prosthetic" and/or "special effects" as search terms.

I've never had any boards like this make me feel any more self-conscious than I already was. I guess when I'm out at conventioins I'm always paranoid that something looks wrong or a part of my costume is falling a part, etc. However, I don't worry about being perfect because I always see my costumes (both each individual one and my costuming in general) as continually being tweaked and improved. Hopefully it tends to be positive.

So in summary: Do your best to realize it will never be "perfect", don't compare yourself to others, and just make the coolest thing you can and keep improving (cliche, I know). Also instead of letting other people's feelings ruin your fun, it should enchance it.

I also second this. I find that attaching stuff to/ slipping over canvas sneakers works well, especially high tops, since it's easier to stick stuff on with different methods. The soles are thin therefore less noticeable, and a pure black canvas shoe with black laces and the white rubber painted black (smooth rubber = easy to paint) makes for a great "hidden" base for your creation. You can even cut them up no problem. It really depends on what your shoes are supposed to look like though, but I'd rather take make a small appearance sacrifice since having your shoes fall apart will be a lot worse.

Not pathetic at all. I feel the same way. This one middle schooler LOVED my Princess Tutu costume. She audibly gasped when I passed and told her mom how cool I looked. EVA foam should be your primary material. Check out a beginner's guide to the rest of the tools and how to use them, but in short: respirator, primer, paint, sharp box cutter with spares and a sharpener, contact cement or barge, heat gun, and attachments like velcro. I recommend checking out Kamui Cosplay, Punished Props, Odin Makes, and Kinpatsu Cosplay.

That's kind of the name of the game. Cosplay is almost never comfortable. Especially with the type of costume you'll be wearing, you'll need a handler or to only put your helmet on for pictures. There's some other courtesy rules if you'd like to hear them.

Is there anyway to possibly save this cosplay sword. It's the first one I did and instead of using; 1. A dowel 2. Only 2 pieces of foam 3. A piece of foam large enough to cut the entire sword. I bought 9.8" squares of 9mm foam so I had to cute the blade on one square and the handle on the other. I also dont have a sander or dremel and have been using a set of sorta sharp knives to cut it all out and none of my 6 cuts (3 blade, 3 handle) came out the same exact size so I kinda cut off all the excess with above knives. I did use tacky glue to get it all to stick together but there are a lot of air bubbles that are visible on the sides (not that I care toooooo much about that) but as you can see I totally fucked the handle. I have sandpaper sheets but trying to sand this demon only really ripped my sandpaper sheets and didnt look like it was doing much. With cons being kinda cancelled in my area I have a lot more time to perfect the sword but I dont know if I should just start over or just buy a small hand sander and try to fix it (if possible). Thoughts /Cgl?

Get a dremel, and use contact cement instead of tacky glue. Contact cement will not budge, the foam will rip before the cement does. You should also get a sharpener (ikea has one that's great) and sharpen your blade every 3-4 cuts, foam dulls blades like nobody's business.

I'm working on a cosplay of the Bubble Head Nurse from Silent Hill 2. To me, it looks like she's wearing a second face on top of her existing (possibly a mask, maybe just a weird growth) face - she has a baby- or doll-like face and then right underneath it there's a second bump which looks like her normal chin to me.
I'm currently thinking of constructing her head like this: I'd build the core of the side "wings" of her head from pieces of foam, get a cheap blank mask and modify it to sit higher than intended, exposing my real chin underneath, and finally top it all off with fabric.
The problem is that I suck at sewing and getting the fabric to fit onto this complicated structure would require way more sewing skills than I have. What do?

I would personally make it out of a stretch pleather and soft upholstery foam, the shape doesn't seem too complicated. Use a wig head padded to size with newsprint and painter's tape, pattern it out of paper adding darts at the top of the head to get the round shape, then cut out of the foam and cover it with the fabric.

It's a pleated rectangle skirt in a thin cotton to avoid bulk at the waistband. You can see the pleats, and the trim at the bottom confirms that the hem is straight, not curved like a circle skirt.

Cheapest and easiest way would be EVA foam. Simple craft foam would probably work as well but might need some additional reinforcement. If you're dead set on using metal, you'll have to use glue to join the rods together unless you have access to welding equipment. I'd recommend going to your local hobby store and asking for thin metal rods or really thick wire, you should be able to bend that with simple metalworking tools, i.e. a couple of pliers and some heat.

Link's bracers are a good place to start imo since it'll teach you the barebones of armor making and doesn't require a lot of materials so it won't be expensive if you mess up and need to start over. You could also try making Cloud's pauldron, which is a more complicated shape but is an easy intro into making really curved pieces.

Can you paint bodysuits? I'm thinking about doing a plug suit Asuka cosplay and I don't want to just go the route of buying a shitty aliexpress suit but sewing a whole bodysuit would also be above my skill level so I'm considering buying a dance bodysuit like pic related in red and painting the details onto it. Paint doesn't stretch, so it will crack when the fabric does and look horrible. Your best bet aside from sewing the pieces to it would be to use heat transfer vinyl with the same type of stretch (amount of stretch and direction(s) of stretch) as the bodysuit. Honestly, you'd be better off just finding a better quality suit if you're looking for something cheap and easy.

These are all thermoplastics, I'm not sure what anon meant. Worbla black should work fine, be careful not to burn yourself while molding it. You'll probably have to do a lot of priming and sanding to get a shiny surface like the reference though, unless you decide to glue a shiny material on top of your worbla base.

Hey gulls! A friend and I are planning on getting an animal crossing group/meetup/photoshoot together for CCE (assuming it doesn't get canceled). I have two questions:

1) Does anyone have any tips for running a meetup/photoshoot/group? As acnh just came out we're expecting a good amount of people to sign up. I've been to big but poorly run meetups in the past (Homestuck) and I don't want this group to end up that way.

2) Does anyone have any tips for humanizing such stylized non-human characters for those who may have never done such a thing before?

I think a good way to start would be looking at what you disliked from previous meetups and try to address them. I've never hosted myself, but here's some things I know from communicating with large groups / have seen others do successfully.

Check out pokemon gajinkas/cosplays. It's mostly an excerise in character design, but look at what makes a successful gajinka and try to emulate those aspects in your design. You don't want the horror that is a 1:1 interpretation, you just need enough elements from the original design to be recognizable and distinct. Look at Isabelle cosplayers. Her hair looks like puffy pool noodles, but they have interpreted it as fluffy curly blonde hair with dog ears. And it makes sense without being a 1:1 recreation.

I'm making a cosplay where several pieces will be hanging off my waist similar to a tasset. To achieve this I was planning on wearing a belt with velcro on the inner portion and then letting the pieces hang with velcro-tipped elastic.

What would be the best way to attach the velcro strips onto a belt? The belt material looks too thick for my sewing machine to handle, even if the belt is made of fabric. Glue doesn't seem like it would hold that long with the heat and wear of my body constantly rubbing against it.

Anyone used herbal cigarettes or other sorts of fake cigarettes for the sake of a photoshoot? Not a smoker and have no intention of starting but my character is a smoker. I know honeyrose is a popular brand because it looks "realistic" but I heard they burn fast which isn't great for photo purposes

If you're dead set on using satin look into full bridal satin, otherwise cotten sateen has a nice sheen and is your best bet, and is easy to work with. Other fabrics with nice sheen are dupioni and peachskin

I've been at a convention near my local town these past couple of years and I was in awe of some peoples cosplays, so I want to begin making some myself.

But where do I even begin? I am clueless and spooked for it looking like shit, total amateur.
How do I make armour? Weapons? How do I paint them? What material do I use? etc etc.

For referance, I saw someone cosplaying as Jorge from Halo:Reach and it looked amazing.

Firstly the most important thing about a cosplay is that you have fun making it and feel good wearing it regardless of what other people might think. However, I know that it can be stressful when you first start because no one wants to look bad.

My advice is to start simple. Pick a character/ costume you want to wear but could be made out of items you find that can be altered here and there. For example, my first cosplay was the homemade spider-man outfit from Spider-man: homecoming. Because the outfit is supposed to look like it was made from thrifted pieces and other homemade stuff there wasn't really any stress in making it look good, because the end result just looked right.

the stuff that took a lot of work was the mask, but even then that was still a lot of sewing and finding creative ways to make things that looked like they fit. Non-traditional crafting items will be a big part of cosplay creation, it's all about what you can find and make work. for example, my goggles for the mask were sink pipe connectors that i filed down and hot glued to a mask i sewed down the middle. For the front i used mesh from an old pair of swim trunks and then cut out some half-circle shapes from an old plastic binder.

when it comes to armor and weapons, especially something as impressive as Mjolnir armor, you'll be using a lot of EVA foam or molds, which are progressively more and more advanced. definitely start with EVA foam. You'll need to find a pattern for the armor or make it yourself and then cut it out of EVA foam. depending on the thickness you may or may not need to warp it with heat so it curves to the dimensions of your body.

usually the foam you will use will be between 2-10mm thick, of course it can be thicker but that depends on what you are making.

Do your research first. There's so much information made by experienced people out there that you're doing yourself a disservice by not looking into it. Youtube is an especially great resource. There's even "How To Cosplay" playlists that cover a variety of beginner topics. I echo what >>10364743 was saying. Break down a big project into smaller chunks. No one is saying that you need to make everything by scratch in order to be a real cosplayer. A great way to start the hobby is by buying a premade costume and focusing your attention on one or two details (like styling the wig yourself of making a prop). Altering existing clothing (whether thrifted or store-bought) is a great way to learn how to sew. The moral is that you don't have to do everything 100% by yourself. Remember that you're a beginner and your projects should reflect that. So don't pick Doom Guy for your first handcrafted piece.

i'm pretty new to cosplay, and new to makeup in general as i don't really wear it at all in daily life, so i honestly don't know much about it. i guess i know the basics (mascara, eyeliner, concealer and foundation) but its pretty low level knowledge.

Knowing what kind of characters you like to cosplay would be really helpful.

In general, you'll want to be more heavy-handed with makeup in pictures than irl since you need heavy makeup for it to show up on camera (which is why Kardashian makeup looks great in pictures but jarring in real life). Circle lenses and false eyelashes will help your eyes pop without your eyes looking crusty.

Easier said than done, getting the shape in these tutorials relies on keeping the tension of different parts in balance, which would be entirely thrown off by also having an open back.
It's a little bit complex since the shape is so gravity-defying, but I would do these with 3 things: modified pocket hoops (green), pads to push the pocket hoops outwards (pink), and a mix of boning and interfacing to create the 'wings' (blue).
Pocket hoops are used in 18th century clothing to create bumps on either side of the hips, but your reference has a much smoother slope at the hips, so you'll need to make the upper bones of the hoops shorter so they jut out less. Using plastic boning is tempting since it's cheaper but use steel or reed, plastic will collapse and look like shit.
Now, pocket hoops on their own will sit with the inner portion directly against your legs, which isn't what's happening in your reference, so adding pads under them will push them outwards. These are just small pillows stuffed with batting and/or fabric scraps and attached to your waist. You may want to tack them to the inner section of the pocket hoops to keep everything in place.
Then, the 'wings'. You don't want them to fall limply beyond the pocket hoops, so they'll have to be stiffened pretty strongly. Boning along the edge is a good start, but the middle will sag if it's not also interfaced. You may have to experiment with how stiff you need it to be, keep in mind that the weight of the fashion fabric and the ruffles will change this. You may even have to make it fully rigid.
Lastly, you don't want any of this to show, so I would sandwich all of these structural parts between the fashion fabric and the lining. Since you have a jacket on top that covers the waistband, it may be possible to have the fabric parts slip over the structure like pillowcases and attach on to the waistband, to help in transporting and storing the costume.

I'd like to put together a Min Min outfit. Most of it I've got a good idea on how to make or buy, but the top green armor piece I don't even know how to get started with. Any ideas?

As someone who has made an open hoop skirt, the balance is actually a lot better when the back is open as well, since it's much lighter and won't swing to the front, causing it to close. For the blue lines in that pic, I would recommend, if possible, to have boning and wire continuous at the top center points. This creates tension in the skirt to stay open and will provide more support. On the downside, it will also add a little more bulk at the top, so whatever ends up looking best. If you make enough support at these center points then you won't need pocket hoops.
For the softness, I would recommend sandwiching some ruffled petticoat netting and tulle under the top layer. Interfacing will be too stiff. Let me know if you have any additional questions or need me to draw stuff out!

For the parts of the vest that are padded I’d suggest thick quilting batting for the front, I used it for something similar and it was nice for a rounded, padded look. The back’s 3D parts you could use EVA foam covered in fabric since those are less puffy and round looking.

If you do LED lights or tea lights pointing outwards (you may need some sort of diffusing sheet if the light is too strong) then it shouldn’t light your face. The reflective light will likely be too low to be visible on the other side. Mirrored lenses will be even less visible on the opposite side.

the character is a humanized calcifer from howl's moving castle. the flames will potentially be made by reshaping cutouts of plastic dividers (i forget the specific name for them, sorry) using heat; I've tested it and it makes the material sturdier and more rigid. I was going to glue them together to form one solid piece, but I've never done something like this before, so it might be a way shittier idea than I'm currently realizing.

Assuming you're trying to blend them into a wig, use a needle or toothpick to poke holes at the bottom when it's still hot. Then once cold, sew the flames into the lace tracks in the wig. Your idea is to blend the two seamlessly. Alternatively if you feel like the flames will be too big to withstand the weight, then poke them through the spaces between the wefts and attach them to a headband or something like that underneath using whatever adhesive sticks.

I did this dress a few years ago with sewn separate fabric scales but there was a tutorial someone made a while back using cut out scales from hard clear plastic from binders. Might not be totally comfortable but you can head mold and paint them without worrying about frayed edges.

You could use a solid non-shiny or little shiny base color for each scale, then add a organza overlay, sew the scallops in rows. It'd be a bitch and a half to to do all of those rows on top of the dress though. Otherwise you could airbrush a piece of fabric with the colors and scallop outlines and then use an organza overlay.

It's going to be really hard to heat form a multi layered piece. But it'll be harder to match the pieces together after individually heat forming then. If the only reason you wanted those layers was for those lines, you could have made then with a dremmel or a soldering iron onto a single layer.

From the photos it seems less like a traditional helmet and more like a mask attached to a cowl of sorts since everything but the face seems soft

Anyone had much experience airbrushing? I'm trying to get a nice gold color but not having much luck. I've tried thinning down gold acryllic paint with water (was still too thick for the airbrush and when I added more it was too thin to get a good coat), candy coat yellow (looks kind of gross and almost greenish), and even just tamiya gold over gloss black (which is kind of OK but doesn't have near the shine of the acryllic brush on paint).

I'd like to avoid brushing paint on since I really don't want to have any brushstrokes showing.

I'd get a stencil like pic related (or make one yourself, if you've got sharp enough knives or one of those fancy plotters) and airbrush the main colors of the scales with fabric paint, then go over the gaps with a fine brush with thinned down black fabric paint to create the darker edges. Idk if it'd actually look good but it might be worth a try.

Im thinking of cosplaying a human version of ashoka tano S3 and I have two problems; skin and hair. First of all, I want to say I for her hair I am willing to completely leave canon since I've found that aesthetically ashoka's colour pallet is atrocious (supported by the cringe amount of ashoka cosplay's) so Im open for any real style or any reasonable color. That said.... Problem 1: I want to recreate her iconic white face-paint makeup, however, it really wont show up on my complexion since Im pretty pale. Problem 2: I don't know what wig I should get, to both reference ashoka's headpiece and without it looking cringe. Currently, Im thinking of getting medium white wig and doing a half up half down braided pigtails. Anyways this is probably too long, but any suggestions for products, videos, etc, would be great!
