Yaya Han makes some 4 way fabrics with texture, but who else makes some? Also, for those who have knowledge of dye sublimation, if I were to make a pattern that is black and print it onto blue, will the blue come out in light reflection/stretching. I've work and seen Spider-Man suits that were printed on white fabric and the whites come through with light reflection and stretching

Any thoughts what to make gray/silver armor in pic related with? I'm leaning towards EVA foam (haven't worked with it before though) instead of doing it with fabric because 1. it'd look better and 2. metallic fabric is a bitch to work with and frays a lot on the edges in my experience.

Use a bald cap for the bald section, you can use makeup to make fake stubble. Get a full wig and cut it up to size. I know some people sew or glue the wig to the bald cap to keep it on.

>> No.10325876

>>10325771
It wouldn't be bad to use scallop lace, but it's not as hard as you think to make that effect. You'll need a 1in seam allowance on the bottom of the dress/ skirt portion. Then, put the gold underlayer and pink top fashion layer fabrics with right sides facing inward. Rather than sewing a straight stitch, you're going to sew the scallops. Use a stencil and ensure that the lines are correct every time and use something very visible to mark it. After you've sewn it down, trim the allowance, cut the curves, and flip right sides out. I'd highly recommend practicing on spare fabric first. As for the bow portion, it would be easier to just add them separately.

>> No.10325877

>>10325725
Absolutely EVA foam. You could wrap the foam in vinyl for a fabric-esque look, but if you do that you'll have to make all of the gold pieces on a separate layer and wrap them individually before applying then add gold bias tape to the edges. EVA foam is just easier and more cost effective.

I'm building my first cosplay that's more than just a mask and some clothes, specifically a Toon Summoned Skull.
I'm looking to created a chestpiece that looks more like a ribcage, anyone ever worked with something like that? My thought is to use something like irrigation tubing to created that rib look, but I'm not certain.
On a related note, the wings. I figure a PVC pipe frame would be the obvious skeleton for it, and I'm guessing a fabric would be best for the rest? This all may sound dumb but I'm just sorting out my plans while I get designs underway.

You can use pvc pipe for the frame, but there's other options if you don't feel like rigging it. I saw an Evil Ted vid where he used a moving bat wing base from party city and then added his own cool fabric wings to make it look more realistic. Here's a simple tutorial on them: https://youtu.be/-3lsYI9LO-g..

As for the ribs, irrigation tubing isn't a bad idea, but it might not be willing to bend at such a dramatic angle. If so, consider heat forming thin pvc, or using EVA foam. You could even use foam dowels if they're thick enough. You'll have to make the bone spurs in the sternum anyway, so I'd personally suggest going with EVA foam. It'll be easier to paint too.

Take a look at characters from Ancient Magus Bride and Overlord for inspiration.

I applied multiple layers of tint to a helmet visor and no heat gun was needed.

Basically, you peel off the sticky backing and then apply soapy water to it. The glue on the tint wont adhere to anything while the soapy water is in the way, allowing you to get your positioning right and work any air bubbles out by rubbing them to the edges so the air can escape. As the water dries, the glue will stick to whatever it is up against and stay in place.

Might be a bit trickier for a curves surface or something, but I dont see why you couldnt use it.

Searching 'red pirate coat' on google gives a number of results that are close. Using one of those as a base and then applying some 40k gubbins on top should give you something pretty close to what you want.

Ideas to keep in mind since you are new to costuming: if you get something and it looks to bright and 'clean' for what you are going for, especially for a military uniform, you can 'weather' the costume to dirty it up a bit and make it look less out of the box.

Also, if you want alterations made or patches put on but don't know how to do it yourself, a lot of dry cleaning places can also make modifications to your costume for you if you pay them for the work AND give them all of the materials you want them to use. I did that to add some decorative bits to a coat I had since my sewing skills are very poor.

Looking at it, my first instinct would be to make a base shape out of a PVC pipe and some kind of plastic cylinder of appropriate size. Like a soda bottle or a round plastic container of protein powder. Make those into a basic hammer shape that you feel is pretty solid and stable, and then build up your layers of detail on top of that.

My friends and I want to do a group Sinister Six cosplay and I'm trying to make a Lizard tail. The idea I'm having right now is to use a pool noodle filled with sculpting wire, and wrapping it in a fabric that has a reptile skin pattern on it. I want it to be semi-poseable (hence the sculpting wire) but I also need to make it lightweight enough to make that possible. I was previously using a leather fabric, but I think that's been making it too heavy and causing it it "droop". So I'm looking for a new fabric or any other tricks to make the tail lighter as a whole.
Though, if anyone has a better idea than this pool noodle thing, I'm open to starting from scratch.

Great suggestions, that tutorial video really got my brain thinking. I might follow a similar approach with my wings, it looks like it'll get the job done. As for the ribs, I did some snooping and found Joann's sells cosplay EVA foam including dowels. While they weren't the right diameter, they were enough to make me believe that would be the best approach, so I went ahead and got thicker variants ordered at TNT cosplay. I should be able to wrap them around and mold them into the proper shape I'll need for the ribcage, probably securing them to the back and then making the sternum a point where I'll be able to take it on/off, probably a hidden Velcro flap or something.
Either way, you really did help. Thank you!

Has anyone expirence with using foam clay? I keep hearing about it and it seems like a nice material as it's lightweight and keeps the flexibility. Does it really keep the flexibility or does it get hard over time as it dries out?

Ah, thank you guys! One more question if it's alright for the thread related to the same prop: I travel quite a bit for cons and was thinking of making it multiple pieces I can put together, like screwed in, velcroed, etc. Does this seem feasible or should I just make it local conventions only?

I'm seen a lot of people, specifically Zonbi's Workshop, Punished Props, and Kamui Cosplay, use it a ton. They all swear by it and it looks like it holds up. I've seen them mess around with it after drying and it does have the foam like bounce after drying. I don't think it dries out since you have to use water to apply it, so once it's dry, it's dry.

it's definitely an A-Line skirt. Look up inverted pleats too, as that's basically what the red parts are. There is actually a bodyline dress with pleats like this on the bottom part of the skirt. maybe looking at pics of it online could help?

>> No.10329284

>>10329148
It's simple. You're going to box pleat your skirt as you normally would. Mark out the areas that are going to be the underbelly of the pleat (ie where the red should be). Un-pleat your fabric. Draw lines connecting from your marks all the way down the vertical length of the fabric. Add a small seam allowance and cut your fabric. It's very important to keep track of which pieces are where. Replace the fabric that you removed from the larger skirt piece (ie. the underbellies) and attach the red fabric. Repleat the skirt - ideally the stitches should be hidden by the pleating. Check out some multi-colored cheerleading skirt tutorials if you're stuck.

>Replace the fabric that you removed from the larger skirt piece (ie. the underbellies) and attach the red fabric
I realized this is worded confusingly. Allow me to rephrase:
You are going to remove the pieces of blue fabric that you cut from the larger blue skirt fabric. These removed pieces are the underbellies that you envisioned being red. Where these blue smaller pieces were, you are going to attach the red fabric to the larger piece of blue fabric. So your finished skirt fabric before pleating should look like one long piece of blue fabric with 4 red fat vertical stripes (according to your guess of 4 pleats in the og image). And etc...
Hopefully that made more sense.

Can I get some wig suggestions? I'm either finding something with the perfect gradient but no matching ponytail, or saying "fuck it" to the gradient but having a hard time finding something in a color I like.
Also, what sort of keywords should I be searching to figure out the bangs?

>> No.10330295

>>10330265
Maybe try getting a solid light color or even white/light grey wig. Then use dye to make a gradient going up. You can do this by making a vat of dye solution and then dipping the wig and and pulling it up to avoid any horizontal lines while going up. There's many online guides to help with this, but I think it would be easier.

As for the bangs, you could probably style the wig accordingly with varying results depending on the wig quality itself. Try looking for wigs that are made for styling and those are usually the quality you're looking for.

Working on my first: Johnny Joestar. wanted to give a quick plot of where I am with planning and see if anyone happened to have any suggestions or could let me know if I was doing something horribly wrong. Much appreciated!

-I'll be x-acto cutting a horse head/horseshoe pattern of thin fabric to attach to a loose beanie. Would a rubber star stamp work okay on a color-compatible fabric, or would I be better off using actual paint and stencils?

-The shirt will most likely be a hoodie I thrift and then trim the sleeves on before adding a felt heart to the shoulder. Any recommendations for attaching felt to other fabric? I'm pretty inexperienced with adhering.

-I found a great pattern for his pants that I'm going to apply to a pair of custom leggings that I'll hopefully be able to stretch down over some comfortable boots.

-I can also apply the same pattern to custom compression sleeves that I can use for armbands, which is cool

-Finally, I'll be grabbing some baby blue lip gloss and nail polish as well as stamping my hands/arms with golden stars (safe ink)

I'm obviously a bit of a mess, but as stated, any help is appreciated.

Not a bad idea, but if I were in your shoes, I'd probably go with this sequence:
1) insert thin wooden dowel into foam cylinder
2) cover with a layer of worbla where the chocolate would be, leaving the rest uncovered and heat to shape.
3) texture cookie part of foam dowel
4) cover in plastidip
5) paint

This sounds like a good plan, but you might want to consider some different materials. First, make sure the bias tape you use as trim for the top has the same amount or similar stretch to your thrifted hoodie. I think foam would work better for the horseshoe, and I don't think felt would look very good on the sleeves. Instead you could do foam covered in stretch fabric perhaps?

Also as another general tip, make sure you have the correct materials (ie stretch needles, glue that will work on fabric, fabric paint, etc)

I can't say much but in my experience I've ordered from Uniqso in the past and I've liked their lenses. The professional and responsible thing to do is go to your eye doctor and get fitted for contacts, and make sure the diameter of the circle lenses you're looking for will fit your eyes. I of course didn't do this because shits expensive, so just follow the basic rule of "if it feels wrong, take it out". Of course they'll feel awkward at first, but if it stays feeling really uncomfortable or itchy or your eyes get red, take them out and don't use them. Make sure to keep them clean, put them in a case, etc. etc. Just watch some youtube videos on it.

One thing is you absolutely do not want to just wear them for 9+ hours for the first time at a con. You need to start wearing them over time. First wear them for thirty minutes, then next for an hour, three hours, etc. You have to get used to them. Always bring a case and eyedrops with you to the con, too.

I'd recommend doing your makeup like that a few times before the con and wearing it out while you do errands, then checking it afterwards. This way you can not just practice applying the makeup but also see if there's any noticeable creasing, fallout, smears or similar and can then adjust it to your liking. >> No.10338087

Honestly if I were you I would redo the hilt completely so the seams aren't as messy. Measure and trim your foam better, and use contact cement instead of hot glue. This will result in less seam clean-up work in the end. After that all you need to do is put some caulk in the seams then smooth with a little bit of water. Once it's all dry you can plastic dip the whole thing then paint. Evil Ted and kamui have videos of hiding seams in foam as well

Medium weight for the vest and lightweight for the cuffs. For the puff sleeves, I recommend sandwiching a layer of organza in between the lining and outer layer. That should be enough to give it body without it being stiff like parts that are interfaced. If you want to have that stiff cartoony look for the puff, use either featherweight or lightweight.

That belt looks like a very beginner friendly project. All you need to do is just cut two identical belt-shape pieces out of worbla, sandwich eva foam between the two pieces and bend the whole thing into the right shape with a heat-gun. Then do the raised pieces/edges by rolling worbla under you hands into a "worm" and attaching into the belt.

You best bet for seeing how much material you need is by doing a pattern for the belt out of paper or fabric, that immediately tells you how big of a sheet you need to buy. You'll need the pattern anyway once you start doing the belt.

Alright /cgl/, I'm in full panic mode right now.

Before doing that though I tried doing the form on a shirt with the brush, and here's the thing: I knew I'm no artist, but holy fuck, either I'm autistic or the brush is but I literally can't do a simple duck without the brush splitting in four and the paint being uneven. I don't know what the fuck to do since I'm supposed to finish this in +24 hours. Is there a simple trick I'm missing or do I just suck this much ? Contacts are fresh until opened. After that, you must wear them and throw them out (if dailies). If you decide to take them out for a while, they should be in cleaning solution. If they are not in cleaning solution, they will dry up and turn hard which renders them unusable. Never put a partially hard contact on, never rinse with regular water, never reuse old solution. Always have clean hands when handling contacts. Read the packaging they come in for better instructions and if worse comes to worse, contact your optometrist. You'll want to get a short (shoulder length) base wig and a ponytail extension. If you can find a thick ponytail extension, great. If not, order extra wefts, 1-2 packs should be fine. The base wig needs to be thick or pre-styled in a half-updo in order to look good. If you get a thin wig, the wefts will show or just look bare.

If you want to look accurate, a similar weight to whatever you are cosplaying. If don't care about that, any weight would do. Having a healthy BMI for your gender and age will always make you look better, though. You can check any BMI calculator for that matter.

When you make a prop out of paper, you can make lots of small folds or cut it into lots of strips and smaller pieces. Foam is different and you can't do those things. So how do I make a 3D model into patterns for foam props? What should I take into consideration?

>>10342023

You're kinda out of luck with toku since they're played by ectomorphic people in tights. I suggest you try armoured characters such as the Beetleborgs or Metal Hero since they are expected to be bulky.

Usually people freestyle the patterns a bit, but if you want to do a perfect 1:1 translation from the 3D model to the patterns there's a popular (albeit quite time consuming) technique for it: https://youtu.be/wRBk9npIevQ

2 questions

1. Would using some sort of LED/Arduno setup be the best way to do the "blade" portion of her sword? If so what would be the best way to go about it?

2. How can I do those drills? I tried wrapping a portion of the wig on a PVC pipe and shaping it with Got2be (failed) and I tried using a method ArdaWigs suggested which involved Wire, Tape, Glue, and Got2be (failed).

Kamui cosplay has tutorials for this, first you convert the 3d file into a papercraft, then you print/make the papercraft and simplify it into a foam pattern. Alternatively you can just make a flat pattern from a photo of a 3d model (look at kamui cosplays dva gun tutorial which explains that method)

>>10342637
Your issue is youre using the wrong kind of glue. Got2b does not work for this application. Use wood glue, tacky glue, and/or kwik seal. Read all the tutorials out there more closely, they tell you how to apply the glue and what to use

I hate that chick. She can make cosplays, but she can't make a joke to save her life. She tries repeatedly anyway, and she sucks every time. Another thing she does is delate the information she is trying to get across, which makes it harder to absorb. I doubt she does it on purpose since a lot of people actually suck at getting info across (your average teacher included, sadly) but you never know. She's also always "buy my books" but that's understandable.

How do I deal with all my cosplay friends being so much hotter and better at cosplay than me? They’ve all been cosplaying for 5-10 years and I only started recently and I feel like I’ll never be on the same level and it makes me feel like it’s not even worth trying sometimes :( like I feel embarrassed by anything I make compared to them!!

Deal with your emotional problems and the rest will resolve itself. Your friends aren't your competition, they're your support. Ask them for help, vent out your frustrations, reciprocate the kindness they give you. They all started out as beginners like you and they should want to or be able to at least point you in the right direction in terms of resources. Don't ask them to do the work for you, just to point you in the right direction.

Normie here; update. I've got questions.

>1.)
How 1:1 does a cosplay have to be to be considered not shit?
For instance, there are some pieces that I already own, but are in the wrong color. Now, I'm comfortable spray painting some of the hard items that I have in order to make the color correspond to the actual character, but I can't really dye or paint some of the soft gear (i/e boots and certain straps).
>2.)
The character's vest is basically an unobtainable item. Will I look like a big retard if I have to get someone to sew pouches onto a cheapy plate vest?

For anyone that cares, here's a progress of what I have so far. The biceps will come later, for sure.

>How 1:1 does a cosplay have to be to be considered not shit?
That question could inspire a long discussion, but to tl;dr it for you: cosplay should never be 1:1, it's about interpretation. The wild angles and anti-gravity laws of our favorite media is suitable for the medium it's in, but would look horrid trying to bring it to life exactly as presented. That's the beauty of cosplay, it's about how you interpret what's seen and how you choose to bring it to life. That's why every cosplay has value, not just "THE best" version, because they're only be 1 cosplayer per character and that'd be super lame.

This leads into answering all of your other questions: no one will notice and/or give a shit. These are things that you will notice but no one else is looking at you that intensely to see in person. And even if they do, you're still in theme of your costume and everything looks legit, so just own your progress my dude.

>The character's vest is basically an unobtainable item. Will I look like a big retard if I have to get someone to sew pouches onto a cheapy plate vest?
You might want to pop in to the military diy thread to see how to best bring that piece to life if they can't point you to a place to buy one, but again, no you won't. Cosplay is all for fun, don't overthink it too much. Someone is just going to loose their mind even seeing that you spent the time to dress up as a character they know, trust me.

This already looks great! I'm not sure what you were thinking of spray painting but don't use spray paint on any cloth. And make sure you add an orange tip to the gun

As for the vest, you can try to sew/modify/make one, but make sure you give yourself enough time to redo it if it isn't great the first time. Alternatively I think just adding a green military themed vest would still look good

If you really want to go above and beyond it would look great if you added some weathering to everything!

I'm looking for these contacts or a pair similar to them, but the only places I've found them are sites I don't trust or haven't heard of.

Does anyone know someplace trustworthy that I could buy contacts similar to these from? Preferably yearly, but I can survive with 30 day.

I want to cosplay Ishtar from Fate with my friend as Ereshkigal, so I was looking into clear shoes I could wear since the version I want to cosplay is barefoot. Would wedges be too thick as to detract from the cosplay? I'm thinking they would be more comfortable than some of the stiletto heels I'm seeing on Aliexpress right now, but I wanted to get opinions first.

Depends on your working speed. An expert could do it in a week or less, but a beginner might need more time to make mistakes and learn on the job. If you know what you need to do going into it, then I think you could probably get it done, but buy a little extra materials and overestimate the time you need for each task just in case.

I'm making a maid costume using the pattern (view C on the right in pink). I'll be connecting the top and bottom to create a dress. I purchased Symphony Broadcloth per the pattern's suggestion and now I'm looking at fabric choices for the sleeve band, bow, and skirt detail. SO, the questions:
1) Would satin/something shiny look bad against the broadcloth?
2) Should I use more broadcloth in a contrasting color, a satin, or is there a better suggestion?
3) How do I avoid the 'cheap costume satin' look?
