probably for practical reasons, portraits are often posed statically. capturing the subject in motion, or photographing them in a still pose that conveys motion, can help extend the "time" contained in the photo. movement over time can be shown by fabric or hair; spinning portraits are a particularly popular way to show off the subject's fashion sense as well as lengthen the amount of "time" that can be sensed from the photo.

i think this works best when the action being taken has a beginning and ending that the viewer can assume. other common gestures, such as hand hearts or holding out the skirt, usually seem to be poses that are only happening for the photo. they are not things you would expect the subject to do if they were not being photographed. they are performative gestures rather than functional ones, so they don't convey a sense of "time", in my opinion.

playing with hair and holding a cigarette are simple poses that can be held by the subject without putting any stress on their body (unlike trying to seem like they are naturally mid-step). if the action is posed instead of spontaneous, the image is less likely to look stiff and artificial if the action is relatively small or simple.

buying and collecting are common themes used in alternative Japanese fashion portraits.
