Because after attending my first anime convention in normal clothes, I felt VERY out of place like I was missing the entire point of it. So next con I came with a cosplay and had alot more fun

I saw this during a late night of watching anime as an 11/12 year old. Didn't know people could "dress up like anime" so I looked it up online thinking it was a Halloween thing and got inspired.

Same anon. I don't invest myself much into the culture aside from watching a bunch of series or playing certain games. Feels like I don't belong at cons although I deeply wish I could enjoy myself more there and connect with people. Cosplaying was the initial idea why cons became interesting again for me with the hope of finding likeminded people after I went to my first one in 2011, just when I started out becoming interested into these kind of things.

Do you meet random people at cons or something? You can connect with your friends anywhere, so cosplaying just to go to cons doesn't make much sense.

First time I went was with sort of a local anime comm group, pretty much a bunch of strangers. Second time was 3 years ago I think, when a friend invited me to go with him, and he's currently the only weeb friend I have. There's also another childhood friend who's watching anime every once in a while, but he's even more casual about it than I am and started living the typical adult life recently (moving together with gf, having a job, different priorities, etc.). It's highly unlikely that he'll be interested in participating at anything like this.

Haven't tried to speak to random people at cons since I felt it would put them off unless the timing is right. Don't get me wrong, it's not like I'm doing it entirely out of desperation. I find dressing up is fun, whether it is cosplay or j-fash. I just thought a cosplay would help breaking the ice and finding people with similar mind and taste compared to just hanging out in an unremarkable normie outfit.

Because going to a convention without dressing up - I would not survive the judgement.

Wearing a costume changes that, because now they aren't judging me as a person as much for going. They can judge the costume all they want, I don't mind.

Because it’s fun as hell. I also love the attention. My heart swells when someone gasps at my cosplay, tells me how pretty I look and asks to take a picture. I guess it’s a major confidence booster as well.

Because it seemed like fun and I wanted to feel cute. I was shocked the first time someone asked me to take a photo, I didn’t realize that even cheap miccostume-quality cosplays could be photo worthy.

I was 13 and thought dressing up as an anime characters sounded awesome after seeing other people do it. Plus I already loved making costumes for Halloween.

Continued doing it a decade later because playing dress up is just plain fun & cons are a great way to meet new people.

Because I saw some cosplay pictures on cosplay.com and thought it looked totally cool as a 13 year old back in 2003.

The real question is, who are all of these Koreans?

>> No.10241783

For fun and to try and make some friends who are into the same things. I'm kind of just throwing myself out there and seeing what happens.
I spent too many year just being depressed and staying inside. This feels like i found something that really interests me again.
I'm only building foam armors though, buying a millions different outfits and stupid wigs for gay and/or lame characters is what the shitters do so I'm not doing that.

Weird mix of reasons for me, its kind of a way to let my hair down and just let my autism show. And i know it sounds bad... its 'kind of nice to be a bit of an exhibitionist. Which is crazy, i don't even wear a two piece to the pool, but somehow in a big convention centre full of fellow nerds i can just flaunt it.
