I don't think it is an unpopular opinion, just a largely unspoken one. I think brand itas are more rare and the percentage rises with the fewer number of brand main pieces they have in proportion to taobao, indy and especially loliable off-brand crap. There are exceptions, sure. They stand out in a good way because they are just that, the rare exceptions in a sea of itas. But as a rule, I think it holds true. Most of the better dressed lolitas I know stick to brand for main pieces, with maybe a few indy main pieces and very few taobao main pieces, (mainly use taobao for blouses) and they only lolify sparingly, if at all. I don't excuse new lolitas because until you have made 2 good complete coords, you haven't really given lolita fashion a fair try to see if it suits you. And my unpopular opinion is that if someone cannot afford to do that, then this fashion might not be the best for for them. I believe it takes both a level of both commitment and one of investment to look good.

Addition: how many captchas are there now? I seem to be getting quite a few. Not fun.

This. I think most of the main pieces should be burando to realky have a respectable wardrobe. And in before 'some people...'
Exceptions always exist but they are very few, by definition. Most of the time singling out the exceptions doesn't also justify subsequent bad attempts. Like 98% of the entire styles of Wa, Qi or Ero depending on the 2% that was good one or two times.

Once again, exceptions. I'm being generous when I say that maybe 10% of taobao main pieces are going to be accepted as good, maybe 2% are ever as accepted as much as burando. If I'm mistaken, please name 10 taobao dresses that would rank up there with burando? I can think of only 2, and I know a couple of my friends dont even agree on those because I have one of the dresses and it's not admired or commented/liked nearly as much as any old burando thing I own. I'm still looking for the second one but after these 2, I will stick with burando.

I only have 4 taobao main pieces (and one that I placed an order for recently that will not be arriving until October). I have a little over 50 main pieces and most of my wardrobe is brand.

I don't know if it would be considered "up to par" with brand, but I think Yolanda's Bunny Herbology and Milk Eggshell's Little Devil Girl JSKs are well made in construction.

My other pieces are Diamond Honey and the quality is quite obviously not as great. They aren't terrible dresses, but they don't have detachable waist ties and you can see why they are under $50.

They can still be corded well, I tend to coord all my taobao dresses with brand jewelry and bags.

I went to a con and I got more compliments about a Diamond Honey dress than the two Meta dresses that I wore on other days.

I know this may not make a very good point because people who go to cons don't know about the fashion, but I was surprised.

>$300 dollar dress meme

Most of the brand-wearing lolitas I know of rarely pay full price or buy dresses new. On last count, I had around 30 main pieces, about 25 of which are brand, and only one of which I purchased new. Of the others, the most I ever payed for an item was $110 for my dream dress and headbow.

When you're a brandwhore, you either spend a lot of money to buy new or popular items, or you devote your time to finding deals and researching lolita. More research = better frame of reference = better coordinates.

Although there are lolitas who look excellent in Taobao dresses, when you can buy a new lolita dress for under $50 from a reseller on the first page of Google results, baby lolitas tend not to put as much time or effort into learning about lolita, so ita chances increase.

Not saying all (or even most) people who wear Taobao are ita, but in my personal experience, the more time someone devotes, the better they'll look.

nayrt but buying secondhand doesn't guarantee a cheaper price. most brand dresses don't even cost 300 full price but their demand increases their price on the secondhand market. The full Perfume of Wonderland set can go for 700 on lacemarket.

>> No.10218714

>>10218706

On the flip side though, a lot of decent-looking IW is sometimes half off directly from their shop while on sale (like right now, though I'm not sure if there's still stock left of the good stuff), and sometimes secondhand it's even less than half off.

I mean if you're after a hype AP print like Perfume Wonderland then you're gonna have to pay up for it, that's being really specific. But if you're already talking about buying a taobao dress because it's cheaper but you have to be careful about quality and sometimes get burned if the stock photos aren't accurate -- well, then. What's the difference with buying another brand dress that's also cheaper but has higher chances of better quality? It's like either of them will be Perfume Wonderland, but you have better chances of quality with one than the other.

nayrt, but even though I buy brand, this is not the reason why I do it. I buy the pieces because I like them, not because I want to support a specific brand.

I simply cannot understand this mentality of "supporting a brand". If they have nice products, I'll buy it. If not, I won't. It's not like they're actually doing anything selfless, worth of supporting.

hate to break it to you anon, but buying secondhand isn't "supporting brand" lmao

>> No.10219085

Buying secondhand does not directly support a brand, but they do benefit from more people in public being seen wearing their items.

I'd recommend, for poor fags, to please consider buying small accessories new from a brand if you cannot afford buying main pieces. They do watch their sales numbers and produce new stuff based on what exactly sold well and what did not. If you see a pair of wrist cuffs in your preferred style/color of lace; buy them. It sends a direct message of "this color, this style!" and you will help steer the direction of that brand's releases in the future.

and before one person can't change everything...
Yes. One person doesn't dictate things. But if you don't vote with your wallet then you can't complain about where things go. Your "vote" does count, you should vote with your wallet at brands as much as you can manage to. Nothing wrong with secondhand, but it's bad for the industry to exclusively go secondhand only.

They just choose the best of the applicants, who are just 99% brand fans and none of them are usually even decently close to actual model material. NAYRT but I have burando and Indy and a couple of TaoBao main pieces too and I do notice that there are more Taobao and Indy itas than brand itas. Not as bad as the ones who try to lolify F21 or HT as main pieces but still there are higher numbers of itas who don’t wear brand main pieces than those that do. I was curious about it so I surveyed a few ita threads and the photo count of those with a brand main piece were fewer than those with a TB or Indy main piece. I don’t count the lolifyers or replica wearers at all because if you can’t even get an Indy or TB main piece, you don’t belong in the fashion, and most everyone agrees a replica is enough to be considered ita regardless of the coord. Interesting to research it a bit.

I think the problem is mostly brand recognition and importance in different cultures. Brand recognition is really important in Chinese society, and as such, they place additional value on an item based off the brand that inflates the price. Because of social media, a lot of newer lolitas entering the fashion now have a bigger emphasis on brand in their head because of the rise of "young luxury", referring to Gucci/LV/etc. marketing teams targeting youths between 16-28 (rough estimate on the higher age, it differs on brand). But for communities and people who don't value brand identity and recognition as much, the additional name of a brand dress doesn't add to their WTP (Willingness-to-pay). Most people in the lolita community long term can afford to pay for brand items, at least second-hand, but they might not find brand items worth it in price to value because of markup on brand items include the perceived added value of "brand name" and identity, and they just don't fall in that target market. It's not a elitist versus poorfag argument, it's just how the market breaks down and how people in different environments perceive value add differently.

Chinese poorfags exist, anon. You need to look more closely at the weibo and check who they are, whether they're actually choosing taobao or if they're just chinese poorfags, and then whether or not they were paid to advertise the taobao brand.

Even better, track down the *owners of the taobao brands (not the brand's weibo, the owner's own personal page) and check out how much brand they wear.

That's if you can even find the owners. Chinese manufacturers have noticed that anime princess dresses are a market, and some decided to try churning them out like fast fashion. We had a Gone With the Wind cosplay dress posted to LU at one point, the manufacturers can't even keep track of which "anime" we're supposed to be "cosplaying" from. Are you really telling me to take you seriously when you're supporting these people, and you don't even know about this happening?

The releases sell out because there's way fewer made of them, bringing us to the next point -- taobao print releases use print-on-demand tech, their sales are only in the hundreds, if that. Whereas burando sales run into the thousands. The difference is with print-on-demand the ink never really penetrates the fabric, so with the rise of taobao you're also seeing tutorials on massaging snagged threads back into place, something you never had to do with burando.

Meanwhile burando has always printed the traditional way (they were churning out prints long before print-on-demand tech), but the overhead cost is pretty high for custom stencils needed to be made for each print. So definitely brand girls are going to support each other and encourage brand-buying, this superior printed fabric is only available as long as you have tens of thousands of other girls all buying burando.

I wouldn't ask poorfags to support burando, you have other things to worry about. Just don't screech that nobody kisses your poorfag ass, your poorness is your own problem, not mine.

Serious question: is quilting cotton bad to make a dress from? Just like in Lolita, there are high-quality brands in quilting, and the difference between the top of the line and Joann/Walmart fabric is very notable, based on the thread quality and print quality.
I’m just curious about people’s thoughts on that, since I see so many handmade itas in these threads. It’s hard to tell whether quilt cotton is an issue, since the examples posted have many major design problems.

Quilting fabric usually is very thin and didn’t hold up well with a petticoat. Not to mention it’s not ideal fabric for making clothing out of since it’s literally designed to be used for blankets. It’s stiff and wrinkles easy and lays awkwardly on a moving body. It’s just not a good fabric choice to do when making lolita. If you want to be taken seriously you will get better quality fabrics to work with rather then what is cheap. Cheap fabric always looks cheap in clothing.

I think one of the problems is that it can be tough to see how a print is going to look large scale. The problem with the above is that I don’t think the print was ever designed to be used “whole cloth.” I’ve quilted with that fabric in the black colorway (which would have been a better choice for the coord, I think.), and I would never use the full repeat for something. Now times that many times over. It’s a very busy print.
>>10218793
This girl, who people have been a little kinder to, picked a fabric that, while busy, is a little easier on the eye, and there are other fabrics to break it up. While the dress isn’t perfect, I think it isn’t terrible.

So, basically, I think that lots of handmade litas don’t really consider what the print would look like draped over a body.
And, you know, shit construction and design.

I would then take the printed skirt fabric and make a large tote bag with each side featuring one of the print features centered (like the bodice). I'd then take the remaining print fabric and any scraps of the better-quality black fabric and make a headbow or some other head piece that further cements the intentional combination of the two.
