The issue with sweet is that if you add most anything that other styles like goth and classic add, you look like an adult baby.

You can get away with garter belts in goth styles, but if you wear the appropriately colored and matching ones for sweet, you look like a fetishist but in goth, it's nbd. Showing knees in sweet? You can only get away w/ that if you're tall but in goth and classic, no1cur. Hell, if you don't have a bell shape for sweet it's almost immediately ita but in goth and classic, you can get away with either a low poof or even no petti. You can wear chokers and BDSM-type gear (like body harnesses) with goth and punk inspired styles, but if you do the same thing in sweet you're immediately an ageplayer and/or sissy even if the gear you choose matches your coord.

There is a lot of things that can go wrong in sweet if you do the same as goth and classic do. Goth and classic can push towards being a little more "grown up" in terms of themes (like ero, showing tasteful cleavage, etc.) whereas with sweet if you lean more towards being adult themes even if it is tasteful or acceptable in other styles it's immediately a fetish and/or age play. It's why sweet ends up being so cookie cutter and not to mention with how print heavy it is, the only other things that really match are the shit that's made to go w/ it which is why you often just go ahead and get full sets which also ends up looking samey.

tl;dr there is no wiggle room in sweet to do much anything other than sweet because it immediately pushes it into fetish and sissy territory.

With the exception of Hime styling, in order to use some of these kinds of things, I think you have to style sweet main pieces to almost not be classified ”sweet lolita” anymore to pull it off. I think it can be done about half the time providing the most juvenile of the prints are avoided. It will never not read ’strange’ if baby items are paired with bondage gear.

I'm actually interested in this topic because I like several sweet prints, including some carousel prints, but I'm not into wearing the sweet lolita styling aesthetic myself, though I really like it so much on some people, super cute. I'm also aware that some who love their sweet wardrobe are struggling as they age, and no, not everyone wants to just change away from their favorite lolita style. I can't say I blame them!

For myself, I like the way AP styles some of their models in a more editorial or eclectic way sometimes. That is a legit precedent for some clear directions on ways to deviate from the sweet lolita formula that has become so samey-same.

Example: choose a sweet skirt or JSK that doesn't have baby things or toys, in a black, navy, ivory or burgundy colorway, then a black high neck or square neck blouse (no Peter Pan or sailor collars).
If it's a skirt, add a black underbust corset.
Wear more sophisticated styles of legwear: fishnets over flesh colored tights, striped or lace tights, seamed stockings,
Then wear black shoes that are more sophisticated, strappy instead of with bows, Victorian boots, some styles from Fluevog, American Duchess, Irregular Choice, Demonia, Bordello etc.
Use metal jewellery, but still in a sweeter theme, just no acrylic or plastic, for example a silver birdcage or gold bow necklace, a gold spoon, a silver key, instead of resin and things with sweets. Use pearls in appropriate secondary colors from the print.
Optional: in the main color/one of the accent colors: stole, shawl, capelet, fake fur collar, velvet bolero, fan, gloves

I commented a few years back that 3F seems to have morphed into cheap print dresses when really, I loved them many years ago for their gorgeous hats. It was really weird to me, their old site is gone and they used to have so many different interesting headwear. Well..... I'd say I'm not a fan of their dresses, but if you've seen them on the tiny Asian models, they're positively dwarfed by how big the dresses are. Then you see them on western models and the clothes actually look right. So I'd say if you're big boned or just not-petite, 3F might be your best chance at not looking like a giant squeezed into a tiny dress. I'd take that over giant itas squeezing themselves into tiny dresses anyday, so.

In all the years I've been wearing lolita, attending meets, etc, I've never seen one of these monstrosities outside of a convention setting.

That's not to say I've not seen a pair of bad ears on someone trying to wear lolita. I just feel like these days, the majority of people who venture beyond Amazon and Ebay searching "lolita dress" tend to not do this.

I think as long as they're cute, well-made and have the proper aesthetic, they're fine when coorded with a cat print or solid if they're simpler in design. This isn’t true at all, they still sell their hats and do more than bonnets. Their most recent insta image shows hats similar to the one in your pic. Second most recent image shows they were selling a bunch of straw hats, and if you scroll down to modeling pics you see these big hats again. They even do more than the “2” bonnet patterns you think they do, they have small ones and a full bonnet variation at least as well as the kind everyone gets.


The reason they rarely sell the big hats is because they hate dealing with shipping them and the time it takes to do orders. So they rather get a batch of premade items and sell in person instead of their half a year wait.

They had smaller hats that were definitely shippable in their old gallery. Yes, I followed their old site to see if I could attend an event or send an in-person SS to one. Next thing I know the site had died and all Atelier Pierrot ever carried was the one bonnet.

It's hard, but it's not impossible. My dad is a type 2 diabetic - his way of dealing with it is by drinking tea and sodas with artificial sweeteners (I personally would rather drink water than diet coke, but he claims to need the caffeine fix and doesn't like coffee), eats a lot of meat, and eats smaller portions of carbs instead of cutting them cold turkey. For example, getting salad instead of soup, getting a side of veggies instead of a starch, or splitting his starchy sides with someone else.
