It's Rinrin. I think she's too small for the clothes she models, so half the photos out there the clothes always look distorted, bunched up and lumpy in all kinds of weird ways. The photog staff probably have to pin the back of the dress to make it not look like she's swimming in them, so the clothes always look bunched up and frumpy.

Np. I'm just a bit confused about why they keep using Risa. Sure she's cute, and maybe she's still popular, she doesn't suit lolita at all, the clothes look overbearing on her more often than not, and I don't even mean sizing wise which is also a problem.

That's not now giving stock to retailers works. They order the stock before the clothes get made so Moitie knows how much to make. That's why physical Atelier Pierrot and Kera shops sometimes have Moitie stuff that's sold out on Moitie's and WW's webshop.

baka look at the way the hem puckers under the weight of the ruffle layers along the skirt. The fabric is too lightweight and flimsy for what they're trying to pull off.

Not to mention the print--it's bloated and unnecessarily large yes but for fuck's sake it's BORING. The amount of strangely placed negative space is awful. The lack of color range and definition makes it hard to tell what the print is trying to achieve (and I'm not talking about the blur from the cell photos) and the construction is boring.

I don't understand why AP is deciding to go in with a more ""classic"" style. There are literally boatloads of already well established brands that do that, it's a bit too late in the game for AP to try their hand at long skirts with large prints and multiple layers of ruffle and trim, they missed the bus on that trend by several years. The only reason Taobao dresses that look like that are as popular as they are is because A) it's an easy way to make an otherwise boring and uninventive cut/pattern look less so, B) it's way easier to tack on trim to the hem of a skirt than draft patterns for actual sewn in designs ie varying shapes in bodice and skirt style etc, C) they're cheap, D) they're literally fucking everywhere because of the aforementioned reasons so it doesn't give people access to much else.

I know I'm generalizing here, there's lots of Taobao brands that have innovative prints and designs that don't rely on cheap materials, that's fucking obvious inb4 someone cries about elitism, but this is lazy.

Why would I buy this from AP when I could just pull up something similar from Taobao for a third of the price and get near the same quality in terms of material and make?

TLDR AP had a strong grip on one of the most popular parts of the lolita market and them deciding to go with whatever everyone else is doing, therefor completely abandoning the corner of the market they owned and were good at, is fucking stupid desu. I don't get it.

One thing I highly recommend is having the Google Translate app and internet (either through paying for an international plan or pocket wifi or a sim card or something). Most of the time just knowing basic phrases will get you along fine, I'd make sure to memorize a good amount, but sometimes you just can't phrase something right and the shopkeeper will be the one who doesn't know a lick of english.

For instance when I went in the spring I tried to ask at AP Laforet if they had the Bunny College skirt in green, the series had just released shortly ago and that color sold out hardcore. I tried to ask if they had it in green but I must have done a poor job phrasing it, the poor girl was so confused and I gave up but she tried so hard. Later on I visited KERA in Marui Annex and realized I should just use my phone and we traded it back in forth as I asked if they had specific Sheglit products, they would help me out and ask when I was leaving because they could order them into the store, etc. The KERA staff were super helpful once we could communicate by google translate.

Shoutout to the lovely lady at Abilletage Laforet, absolute sweetheart and even let me take pictures, only place that did really.

Shopkeeps are really friendly when you follow the rules and doing your best, the language barrier is the real hurdle. Even the Harajuku CC staff were really friendly with some foreign girls I talked to in the store who could speak Japanese but since I clearly couldn't speak it they had few options for communication.

I did at Kera, having pictures ready of a necklace and a skirt that were in stock online, but then the shopkeeps were trying to tell me something that I didn't understand at all. Instead of just telling me no they were trying to explain the whole "we don't have it I think but we can order it". I didn't understand anything they were saying until I pulled out my phone and the app and wrote down my question and they in kind. With the Angelic Pretty girl the skirt was right there in the store in blue, I was grabbing it and asking if they had it in green. I think she was also trying to overexplain rather than just say no unfortunately and that was my first day in Japan so I didn't even think about the app.

It just makes situations easier where they are trying to be nice, but being nice requires a lot more words.

Besides the obvious language barrier, what you said is pretty much it. I know Lor isn't really popular here, but in her Kelly Eden video she explained a lot about why a lot of Japanese shop staff seem standoffish at first, if it just appears that you're an outsider looking in rather than someone who knows and appreciates the fashion they don't know what treatment they're going to get. Once they know you're interested in the fashion and not just some obnoxious tourist there to gawk at 'wow weird quirky japan' they'll generally make an effort to communicate with you, as best as they can. They have to deal with said obnoxious tourists and people that don't respect or try to understand the fashion every day.

When I went to Japan and visited brand stores, I knew what lolita was but hadn't started buying/wearing it yet.I pretty much just pointed to stuff and spoke what little Japanese I could muster (yes, no, this is cute, thank you etc.) I went to AATP in laforet first, not wearing any lolita and they were really nice to me, showing me all of the different accessories and dresses and matching blouses at the time. I still have my stamp card that I kept as a souvenir. As long as you try to learn a few basic phrases and show that you have interest in the fashion, they will generally treat you well. As for trying things on, I never had to since I was already familiar with Japanese freesize clothing and knew things would fit me. I think that maybe if you look like you obviously won't fit something, they wouldn't let you try it on. And like you said, if you're not certain you want to buy it you probably shouldn't try it on. In the occasion that you try something on and damage it, then decide you don't want it, then they can't sell it later on at the same price.

The staff in super touristy areas can definitely be less friendly to foreigners unless it’s obvious you wear lolita (although at Closet Child they are always kind of meh). At Laforet you’ll see tourists walking around with professional cameras ignoring the no photo signs so I’m sure they are sick of having to deal with that. It sounds like you’ll be fine though. And just a heads up that there are a lot of things you’re not allowed to try on (basically any knit pieces or things with small head holes) so always be sure to ask. If you do try on remember to take off your shoes and put the makeup bag over your head so you don’t damage the clothing!

Known scalpers who consider themselves stores will reduce their prices over time because they got their items so much under retail that they can mark them double or triple what they paid and reduce them until they sell

Some sellers do flash sales for emergencies and are willing to take a loss just to get some money. Then if they recover from that the item will go to its normal price. Not scalping

As long as you are not big, they are relatively friendly. They have the tendency to tell you items are made in Japanese sizes, to give of the hint they expect you to be too tall/big for their clothing. But this only happens if you are vissibly on the max of shirring measurements.

I found the staff at closet child and secondhand shops to be the most chill. They never really approached me during shopping and were always very kind when I approached them. The staff at Baby directly came to me to ask if I was looking for something. Which was a bit intimidating as I had literally just stepped into the store, but as soon as I explained that I sought a matching item for one of their skirts, she really tried to help me. Have to say I have never went through a store that quickly.

Besides the points you mentioned I believe some are bothered when you touch many of the items as well. Also be sure to keep into account they might want you to take your shoes off when you enter the fitting room. (I am pretty sure they always want you to.)
Also it’s common they hand you your shopping bag once they have guided you out of the store. I got confused when the cashier wouldn’t give me my purchase and kept pointing to the exit, until he explained to me he was going to give it there. (Have to say only Baby and Atelier Pierrot did this when I was there.)
But in general just give of the look that you are genuinly interested in the fashion. If you wear lolita or just your lolita items in a casual way, they tend to be much more friendly.

Fril and Mercari aren't good comparisons. Cheap things sell immediately to the rainies of the world with a good SS and are hard to get there. What I do mind is that it became 50% more than that as soon as I expressed interest and it's been relisted for 3 whole years. I get you can ask whatever you want at the end of the day, but jeez. Luckily I know a round about of how much shit should be worth and once in awhile I'll find a good deal.
But then I see shit like a fucking damaged bodyline replica and they expect people to actually pay money for that.
I kind of feel bad for newbie lolitas who don't have anyone to help hem wade through the myraid of shit.

I never knew that this bodyline dress was a replica. Either way, it's probably time to throw it into the bin.

You misunderstand. The dress from bodyline isn't a replica. But the dress for sale is a replica of a bodyline dress.

t. didn't buy second hand moitie in the past two years. Everything that isn't really boring or unappealing sells within 5 minutes or is a bloody bidding war in auctions.

I actually do buy secondhand moitie but sometimes it doesn't fit me. And when I ended up trying to sell some things I had to take a loss compared to what I paid from Japanese sellers and relist several times even at the cheap prices

He’s old news, he sold Bodyline last year so he is long gone and has left us all behind.

I bought a whole set for a big event in my comm tomorrow and the head piece didn't come. I don't have anything near the color and I don't have any neutral hats.
I am so disappointed. Any ideas, gulls? There is a detachable bow on the dress I feel like could maybe attach to my head for balance.
