FWIW, I regularly go to Sakura-Con which almost always runs on Easter weekend. On Easter Sunday several times there have been people handing out fun-size candy or eggs, usually kids with their parents so I've never thought twice about accepting them.
I think for me it's only if a gift was "unprompted" if coming from an older person that would make me feel odd. Not even out of fear of poisoning, just kind of a general odd feeling. But since it ties into your character you could offer them after people take a picture or something - sometimes when I cosplay John Wick I bring a bag of chocolate gold coins (like the gold coins in the movies) and offer one to people if they recognize my cosplay. Having that "in" is fine and easier to accept a "no thank you" ime.
