I used the spear mainly overhand like pic related (but pointed lower, toward the legs), or tucked under my arm for stability. In formations, the overhand way of holding it meant I could poke at enemies farther away with the spear while using the sword to ward away blows and punish opponents who tried to get inside my reach; when the formation broke and we were in more one-on-one combat, having a large pole in the off-hand made for a passable pseudo-shield that I could also use to attack, helping to prevent whoever I was fighting from getting too close.

I still wouldn't recommend it over a large shield for formation combat, but as an alternative it's not bad.
