I wish lolitas knew anything about fashion outside modern Lolita. Everyone in the 90's and early 00's looked like hot mess. The mainstream fashion was awful, absolute nightmare. I guess you really had to be there to know. That's main reason lolita became popular in west.
People are already romanticizing emos and h*roin chic look. These girls look fine and obviously did something right if their pics still make people happy today. Just enjoy the fashion and keep it alive.
