My own solution to this was to use the scabbard in a way like a rifle sling and carry it over the shoulder, hilt up of course. I can easily draw the sword, no annoying harness do deal with and if I enter combat then I would throw the scabbard in a bush or a ditch before rushing in, and if I don't expect to have the opportunity to retrieve it later I would just sling it back over my shoulders after drawing it.

I don't like back scabbards and advice against them, they make your character look cheap and childish, if not perverse >>10189902 . If you absolutely want to go that route then at least make your own system, preferably by integrating them in to your armor (like custom fasteners on a gambeson that you can attach the scabbard directly to).
