a lot of fashion portraits avoid facial expressions in their subjects, perhaps because it is difficult to fake them or because they may be unflattering. i think that expressing emotion can add a lot of character and human warmth to a portrait, though. a blank stare or polite smile is safe. so, here are some unsafe, expressive portraits that i think convey perhaps an unconventional realness.
