Personally I would at first argue that's shit because the reason you have tiers is to give some sort of bonus to the people that bother putting on a heavier armour (comparatively). If they're going to make that rule change, they might as well do away with tiers altogether.
Given that most people's poly armour looks like stacked turds or anime fever dreams, it will kill immersion for some, but more importantly, where's the line? Can I wear pic related and pretend I'm in heavy armour? It looks better than most poly armour.

On the other hand, there is metal armour out there that negates the above statements. There is plenty of light weight "plate" armor or chainmail made out of aluminium and the like for larp, rope chainmail, welded chain, etc.
And there are some horrendous looking metal options, too. Most of Epic's catalogue, for instance. Or leather armours that have paper thin strips aluminium riveted on, straight from the laser with no shaping afterwards.

The real question is, how good are the armours currently worn, and how much worse can poly armour be?
