Photoshoots aren't that great imo. The people who constantly get the spotlight are either super obnoxious or know the shoot organizer, especially if it's a popular series/character with low-effort cosplays. Photoshoots generally work by someone calling out prompts and then all the cosplayers fitting that prompt go up to the front. E.g. All Madokas or all Neptune/Uranus ships or all season 2 outfits.
If you're doing a rare character or an outfit you'll get your few seconds of fame. Shoots can be fun and you can get cute photos out of it but nice pictures with you dead center really aren't the point. React quickly when you're relevant and you'll be fine, but don't try to shove yourself into every shot.

Which shoot are you thinking of attending specifically? I generally just lurk around and pop in for a picture or two. If it's fun, I stick around longer but if it's full of cringy teenagers I dip the fuck out. Last year I remember at the Fire Emblem shoot the organizer really didn't know anything except Fates and Awakening so all the older series got shoved to the side and this one really annoying girl (idk the character) would run into every shot with male characters screaming I SHIP IT because.. apparently that was canon. Don't be that girl.
