Embroidery is essentially "drawing pictures with thread", so the only real trick to it is knowing different kinds of stitches. You definitely don't need a machine.

I have a friend who is super into embroidery for historical garb (and sometimes just for fun). She sort of sketches out her designs on the fabric in pencil, then goes over them with embroidery floss.

I think most of her stuff is pretty basic back stitch and stem stitch, but she has no formal training, she just kind of made stuff up as she went.
