I tie them at the end of the back (have to put my hair in a ponytail first though) and for heavier stuff (like ribbon headddresses) I use click clack clips (pic related), because pins slide out of my hair and I find them fucking up my hair more than they should.

I have a smaller set of those click clacks, so they don't show much under my headdreses
