You'll see a lot of string Christmas lights ("fairy lights") in the cutesy princess rooms. You could borrow this idea and hang up black string lights or lights sold around Halloween time for a similar effect.
Pic related has a good example of a black "canopy" above the bed. In this case she put curtains on a curtain rod, but it still frames the bed.
