Before you attach the tip, carve the head into the shape you want while keeping the front end flat. Then attach the tip--at least 2-3 inches of open-cell foam, please for the love of God not half a nerf football like the guide says--and cut it to your preferred shape. Make sure to leave an inch or two of space at the bottom of the open-cell tip to tape it securely to the blade, and you probably want to round the point of the foam off a bit, if not just leave it flat. Most larps' problem with points isn't stiffness, it's the tendency for small points to get into somebody's eye, so leave a flat or rounded area about 2 inches across at the tip.

For poles, I recommend the fiberglass poles from bandshoppe (http://www.bandshoppe.com/category-s/188.htm)) in whatever length you like. Don't use them for a one-handed sword though, they're too wide for the kind of grip you need with those.

It works fine for transport, nothing really edgy or ridiculous about it. Just make sure you have it drawn and ready if you expect to go into combat, otherwise you're liable to be taken off-guard and defenseless.

Picture 100% unrelated this time.

If you don't want to look "odd" I suggest following the rule of tincture. It separates colors for heraldic purposes, but creating a contrast that holds up over distance. The tabard being in general a heraldic garment, should follow.

Colors are Blue, Red, Black, Green, Purple, with Brown being rare.

Metals are Yellow (gold) and White (silver). Orange is rare, and considered a shade of yellow.

Color on color, or metal on metal are super rare, and at a distance, fade into each other.
