A lot of guys seem to like the more elegant, theme-less pieces it seems like. Maybe as girls (cis, trans, whatever kinda girl) we're more drawn to the "fanciful" image of Lolita because of what we grew up admiring (media aimed at girls, toys, etc) while guys maybe are looking at it from a clean slate / objective standpoint?

That's so cute! Even if the magic kinda wore off that's really adorable. Mine seems to notice when I improve, or step it up so to speak. He automatically noticed the difference between a brand piece and my standard bodyline fare the first time I opened a package from closet child.

That's super interesting... Maybe he likes something related to the theme in the print? My bf once offered to chip in with a dress at a store because it was steam punky. He's not into fashion either, but he likes anything steampunk-related.
