VW would be the punk influences that were big in the 90s. My guess is also Nana and Paradise Kiss were at its peak during this time that had more people incorporating VW items than say in present day. I wouldn't say it makes it right out old school but I do feel it was used more heavily during the old school period, if that description makes sense.
