Yeah I'd definitely drop the wig idea and go with synthetic dreads braided into your own hair. If you buy them avoid the thin, shiny, plastic looking cheap ones like pic related. You can also buy kanekalon and make your own.

Installing them yourself may be a little annoying depending on how used you are to doing your own hair, so could be helpful to have a friend help you with that part.
